Second son: Richard

Richard's the wild child. He's the one whose loud, unapologetic, and a right terror. He grows up as the baby of the family, so everyone indulged him as a child. LOL, technically, he's been replaced by Alfred as the baby, but since Alfred can only interact with Arthur, Richard still holds the "baby' status in his family. He's gonna be in for a reckoning when he gets his first little sibling. 🤣

Honestly, I think he'll absolutely adore his first little brother. He'll love all his little siblings, but the first one is special. It's different. They're the one who made him a big brother. They'll probably end up being Richard's favourite, and I think u can guess who that'll be.

He's got Arthur's temper, but Rónán's rage. Quick to anger, and slow to forgive. Not a good combo if u get him as an enemy. 😓 But he's not a brash, hot-headed idiot like he presents at first glance. Honestly, any child who grows up with Rónán mac Lir and Arthur Kirkland as their parents can NEVER be an idiot. Plus, he was raised as the Duke of York, Edward's second-in-command, so he knows how to play politics and manipulate the field. He just chooses not too unless given incentive... 👀

Tbh he actually takes after Rónán sm. It's not obv at first glance, bc if any Nation looks at Richard, they'll think: Loud, check. Eyebrows, check. Short-temper, check. It's England's son! Which is true, but ultimately he's definitely Rónán's son. 😆 Like he might be short tempered like Arthur, but he doesn't have his generous capacity for forgiveness. He's a lot more colder like Rónán is, and good at hiding it bc he's outgoing and charming. Most people don't clock it, except the English and the family.

Bby Richard: Yelling, throwing off his diaper and screaming for Arthur.

The English and the Family: Yep, that's Rónán's son.

IK I wrote Richard as a mama's boy here, and it's true. He is a massive mama's boy, part of the reason is bc he's just naturally like that, another part is bc of Elizabeth Woodville. He's always favoured Arthur, but when he found out about Elizabeth Woodville being his bio mom, he labeled her as a "threat" to his relationship with his mom. Honestly, he was just a kid being dramatic. And he would've grown out of it if it wasn't for the Tower. 💀

The Tower srsly messed up everything. It destroyed any chance of Elizabeth having a relationship with Edward and Richard. And honestly, it their minds it just adds to their love and loyalty to their parents bc THEY were the ones who saved them, while Woodville abandoned them. Richard was more affected by it bc he was the one Woodville sacrificed.

He mostly heals from the Tower, but some things will affect his psyche forever. 🥹 Like Edward, he does end up being colder bc of this betrayal.

Honestly, I've got so many thoughts about the Kirkland kids, so I'll write them out here. Lol I'll probably do a post on each of them.

First son: Edward

Edward's the eldest of the Kirkland children, the firstborn, the eldest brother to a LARGE brood of brothers, who are all ironically little shits. And he grew up with RICHARD 💀 so he's got a lot of experience reigning in idiotic siblings.

He's generally very responsible, intelligent, neat, essentially the perfect heir. I mentioned this is a chapter, but he grew up listening to Rónán roasting English royals and seeing how it hurt Arthur. Deep down, he's a mama's boy like Richard is, and he loves his mother a lot. ❤️ He ends up internalizing all that, and has the pressure to be "the perfect heir." 😭 Because as king, if he fucks up, the backlash will ultimately fall on his mom and that's the last thing Edward wants. He's very relieved that he never becomes king. Honestly, I think the stress would've sent him into an early grave.

But he would've been a great king and honestly, now that I'm thinking of it, writing an au about that might be fun. 🧐

UNFORTUNATELY, bc Edward is no longer king, he transfers his perfection standards into putting his all in being the good son and a good brother. He sets high standards as the firstborn. Tbh all his siblings look up to him as this infallible, relable, steadfast brother. Their rock. But inside, Edward's a whirl of emotions. He hides it well, but sometimes he worries if he's living up to standards. 😬 He's mostly fine bc he has a supportive family with loving parents who encourage his confidence. But his emotions really war with each other during times of uncertainty. Like in the Tower.

Tbh Edward takes after Rónán the most. On a surface lvl, he shares a lot of traits like Arthur, like their sense of duty, responsibility, being neat, etc. But deep down, Edward is Rónán's son. 🙂‍↕️ He's got his pragmatic and ruthless streak. Rónán definitely spent a lot of time training Edward as he grew, bc he's literally WATCHED English history unfold, and he's not about to let his own son get stabbed bc he can't do politics or rule. (LOL little does he know...)

But part of the reason Edward is a lot more colder like Rónán, is because he and Richard were literally almost killed about their own uncle over a freaking crown. He spent MONTHS in the Tower thinking he'd die, and then seeing Richard tossed into this hell by their own birth mother. 🫤 Yeah, no. He's lost all sympathy to anyone but his friends and family.

But ultimately, he's his own person, not his parents. He'll grow differently than them and it's smth I'm excited to explore in the future. Mind u, there's a bunch of possibilities for him to take bc I haven't even finished writing half way through this fic.

Behind the scenes commentary on the Maiden Chapter 1

Disclaimer: my thoughts here aren't canon to the fic universe unless I write them into the story

Like I said, I actually pre-wrote Family Sticks Together until Act 4 bc I was on a writing binge. I've been taking a break for like a month and then inspiration struck! LOL 😂

Tbh I never intended to write about Jeanne bc idk how she and Arthur would somehow become friends. But as I thought about it more, I realised that she's gonna play a role in the main fic later.

And also it would be fun to explore the lives of other side characters bc they deserve it. Especially all these women in history, who Arthur changes their lives for the better.

So I'm just gonna churn out really short fics about these side characters, but they'll updated like every few weeks bc life is crazy lmao.

Chapter titles will all be quotes from Joan of Arc herself. This IS her story. 😌

As we all know from Rónán's and Arthur's convo, Apollo is Jeanne's father, he pleads with Arthur to spare her life, Jeanne faints at news of her heritage, she becomes friends with Arthur, she swears an oath not to raise arms against England for perpetuity, and she joins the hunters of Artemis.

So how does that happen?

The first chapter mainly talks about Jeanne's life up to the execution.

Apollo doesn't actually show up in the fic but his presence is felt throughout the story. Jeanne actually takes after him a lot. She has his face, his temper, his curls, his dark side, his wit, his amazing talking skills, etc. 🙃

There's a reason he's never showed in her life and I'll explain later.

Historically, Jeanne was on bad terms with her family. I'm taking creative liberties here and using that tension bc she is a bastard. They weren't abusive or anything, but they did NOT like her.

HELP! ARTHUR CANNOT STOP BEING AN ELDRITCH LITTLE SHIT! Istg, this boy freaks people for fun. He's such a little wet rat bastard. 💀

France and Jeanne are buddies that throw shade at courtiers they don't like. Ofc now they've been torn apart so that's gonna be fun to unpack.

I've tried to imply it throughout the chapter, but idk how successful I was. Jeanne actually has a lot of built-up anger. She's angry at a lot of people, but she only made her peace with it bc she was about to die. Now that she's not well...💀

I keep bringing up the number seven in the fic bc it's Apollo's sacred number. Also three is an important number for the Greeks so that keeps getting mentioned as well. ☀️

Arthur's definitely not allowing Jeanne to be raped in this verse. And the guards are 100% loyal to him. The English have been conditioned too thoroughly to respect his orders (also the geas is scary asf) to go against him.

THIS FAMILY IS SO UNSERIOUS. LIKE THEY ARE CONDUCTING A VERY SERIOUS RESCUE MISSION AND CHOOSE TO HAVE A CAT FIGHT IN THE MIDDLE! 🤡

Ironically, it makes Jeanne less wary bc they're acting like normal siblings and not assholes. So good for them.

Jeanne's been repressing her memories bc she's stubborn. She's been in denial for her whole life and suddenly the truth smacks her in the face.

That's how she faints LMAO.

Thoughts of the Kirkland children

I've been thinking about this for a while, but now that Edward and Richard have been introduced, I've been seriously considering it. Keep in mind that these thoughts are not necessarily canonical to the fic verse until/unless I write them into the story.

I'm not sure how many children Rónán and Arthur will have. I know I said 6, but that's the MINIMUM. There's a lot of factors that could come into play and it could increase that count by a lot. I'm still unsure on the final number.

I headcanon that they'll Batman-style adopt every single one of their kids except their youngest who'll be conceived the biological way. The youngest might show up in a sequel? But idk how that sequel will look like yet lmao.

I'll give a spoiler tho, the way things are going, they're gonna have an all-boys lineup. It somehow fell in place. Rónán's gonna be srsly exasperated with them. They're all little shits in the best and worst way possible.

I'm sure you can guess the identity of a few of their children, but remember this IS AN ASOIAF CROSSOVER. Not all of their children will be from the Hetalia universe.

The Nations won't know about all the children. It's like how they don't know about Arthur's family. Some of the children will never be known unless the truth comes out someday.

But I'm thinking of writing a fic where the Nations will meet the Kirkland children but not know of it.

Or if they do, what are their thoughts on them.

The children will ALL play a major role in shaping history. Some more than others, but they will all leave their mark.

Hey findus! Any ideas on how and when the magic trio became a thing? It's nice to imagine them as Norway's friends, but I wonder how it happened...

The Magic Trio probably didn't become a thing until the recent years, and it was probably England that brought them together as a friend group. Norway and England have a very long history as friends with lots of interactions. England also established ties with Romania in the 1800s to get him out of the Ottoman Empire and independent from Russia. So I can see England and Romania growing closer and striking up a good tone on a personal level in the late 1800s. At this point Norway is finding his own legs to stand on as a semi-independent nation as well - coupled with the genres being explored and celebrated in literature and imagery at the time, seems like something they all could have bonded over. Folklore and magic becomes more of a popular thing. England then introduces Romania to Norway because they are some of the few nations he knows who are into the same stuff as him. They kind of hit it off in the late 1800s, but then is more off as the first half of the 1900s comes along. They then rediscover their shared interests in the modern era and makes more of an effort to get together and explore magic as a group.

Matthew kicks Alfred out his house to stop him talking to Arthur but also the fact that they argue over why Matthew continues to eat the marmalade that Arthur makes for him. Like it's such a petty grievance Alfred chill out. Matt needs the Vitamin C okay and it is rude to not eat the food people make for you asdfghj.

Matthew was apparently in charge of the flowers and chickens when he lived with England. The house thing is unclear and debatable because Mattie may be conflating the...polar bear's... home with Arthur's house since Alfred is asking him to get his own place (independence) which just makes me think that 19th Century Kirkland Manor was a bloody menagerie between the elephants, koalas, sheep and polar bears we see with assorted dominions and colonies.

how to describe a loving gaze

⇸ eyes darting all over your face, trying to figure out which part of you they want to set their eyes on the most (it's impossible)

⇸ gazing at you like you're miles away only when you're a few feet away, standing with another person. their stare is hard, intense, but also melting and blank.

⇸ a featherlight touch to your arm with their eyes softly peering up at you. they can't believe that you're allowing them to touch you like this—so innocent, so softly.

⇸ late nights where its just the two of you in a car. they turn over to look at you but immediately turn. for the safety of the both of you, they can't stare at you any longer

⇸ when you're teasing them, they have to bite down extra hard to not release that smile from their lips. their eyes are squinted more tightly than usual. still, they're glued onto you.

⇸ meeting their eyes from across the room, and the two of you have the exact same thought. you turn away first to hold back your laughter, but their eyes are pinned onto you.
