I like watching stuff where clones/copies/AU versions of people turn up somehow, and every time I see them I think about the question "is an alternate version of me still me" and for me, the answer is "yep that's me, every version of me is me" but I feel like a lot of people don't think that way. That they think of Other Me (Other Them) the way someone thinks of a twin, rather than the way someone thinks of Past Me and Future me still all being me.

I am a Chicagoan of several years who has never owned a car, and while I too appreciate the CTA, it is a pretty rough system for commuting specifically. In Chicago, the trains spoke out from a central hub downtown, and the buses each go along one street - on the grid layout, they are basically driving back and forth on one line of longitude or latitude.

This is a very transfer-reliant system because instead of directly connecting workers to workplaces, the simplest ways to another part of the City are usually:

Take the train to the hub & transfer to another train going the correct slice of the city (like, triangular cake slices)

Take the X axis bus, until you get to the Y axis of your destination, then transfer to the Y axis bus.

And transfers are the true enemy of commuters. In the morning, if you miss your first bus or the bus system gets out of sync, you might be half an hour late. Depending on the job, possibly a fireable offense. But the real problem is going home.

The later in the evening, the less reliable things become. So, maybe your first bus is a 10-15 minute wait. Then your second bus could be a 20-30 minute wait. I met someone who had been waiting at the bus stop for 2 hours, so I gave the bus up as a lost cause and luckily had the money to order us both a ride share to get where we were going. It's a lot of time to spend sitting in a brutal Chicago winter night, and a lot of stress. I hope to never own a car, but living in Chicago without one is not the most practical way to be. Mercifully, I can walk to work now.

I want to write a book called “your character dies in the woods” that details all the pitfalls and dangers of being out on the road & in the wild for people without outdoors/wilderness experience bc I cannot keep reading narratives brush over life threatening conditions like nothing is happening.

I just read a book by one of my favorite authors whose plots are essentially airtight, but the MC was walking on a country road on a cold winter night and she was knocked down and fell into a drainage ditch covered in ice, broke through and got covered in icy mud and water.

Then she had a “miserable” 3 more miles to walk to the inn.
