The Sphere's Embrace
I have officially finished posting to @linbeifongsweek
Here’s my submission for day 8 of Lin Beifong’s Week. You can also find it on AO3.
Pairing: Lin Beifong x Bumi
Rating: M
Art made by JadeLotus💚
The Sphere's Embrace was a cunning and formidable trap, designed to ensnare unsuspecting trespassers within its metallic grasp. At first glance, it appeared to be a massive spherical structure, looming ominously within the chamber it guarded. Its surface gleamed with a metallic sheen, betraying no hint of the danger that lay within.
It all started because because everybody loved to go out of their way to make Lin's life harder than it already was. But really, this was far from circumstantial. There was a logical series of events that had thrust Lin into this position.
After defeating the Red Lotus, it was a rather grievous few months when Korra departed for the South Pole for her recovery. Because spirits were down, and instead of joy in the face of victory, Republic City was facing melancholy in the wake of a shattered Avatar, and all of Air Temple Island was living within the gloomy waves of despair. Because the new airbending master, Jinora came to the rescue by taking inspiration from the glory of the Yangchen festival and organized a little ritual for Korra's speedy recovery followed by a festival of merriment for all the attendees.
Because her moronic sister said "two Beifongs are better than one" and brought her own incredibly ridiculous-looking portable prison in case any wandering Red Lotus members decided to crash their party.
The Sphere's Embrace consisted of a colossal spherical shell, constructed from reinforced platinum and intricate mechanical components concealed within its surface. Suspended above the ground, it rested upon a sturdy base, its polished exterior offering no indication of the mechanisms hidden beneath. At the center of the Sphere's Embrace lay a cozy bed, tempting weary travelers with the promise of rest. However, this seemingly inviting surface harbored a deadly secret. Embedded within the floor of the threshold, were pressure-sensitive sensors, finely tuned to detect the slightest weight.
It was because of that final security sweep Lin did towards the end of the ritual. Because Lin just had to check out that stupid giant ball-sac of a prison that was supposedly impervious to any and all bending. Su wouldn't admit it, but Lin was certain this had Kuvira's blueprints all over. But finally, It was because she saw a pair of naked butt cheeks galivanting inside the prison.
Lin had hopped in without a thought- ready to fight the prisoner that had already taken his rightful place.
Upon detecting the presence of an intruder, the Sphere's Embrace sprung into action with lethal precision. Bi-parting doors, seamlessly integrated into the spherical shell, would snap shut with thunderous force, sealing the victim within its metallic confines. The doors would lock with a resounding clang, rendering escape impossible from within. Those trapped within must await the mercy of their captors or the intervention of an external force to secure their freedom.
"Lin!" the naked man, she now recognized to be Bumi, shrieked in unison with the snapping doors.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck—"
Lin was panting as she frantically ran across the room looking for vulnerabilities in construction. Naturally, she failed in bending the platinum walls. The prison was well thought out, a real testament to Kuvira's cunning. The bed in the center was made entirely of wood and unbendable materials. The counter top had a straw bowl with some bananas to keep the prisoners alive, a fruit with not enough water content to use to cut the platinum walls with pressure. Certainly, even lightning couldn't break a metal this dense and durable- maybe slightly damage it- but Suyin made sure it was flawless.
"What are you doing in here?" she managed to berate.
Thankfully, he had the decency to cover his genitals with his hands. "I just wanted to have a look at—"
"And where are your clothes?"
"They're outside- are- are we trapped in here?" he asked, cowering.
"What do you think, Wan Shi Tong?"
"Sheesh there's no need to be—”
"We're fucking trapped in Suyin's bending-proof platinum nut sac!"
"Relax, Lin. Someone's going to notice we're missing and—”
"No?!" she cried, a pitch higher, "they're going to assume we left- like the rest of the crowd."
"Tenzin's going to notice I'm not—”
"Is he?" she screamed. "Or is he going to assume you bailed to go party in the city like always?"
"Okay you have a point there," he admitted. "But—”
"Oh, fuck me, Bumi—”
"Gladly! I'm ready. You're the one still wearing clothes," he said all too seriously.
"Stop trying to—” Lin shook her head and swallowed on her dry throat, dumbfounded. "What did you say?"
"It would be a honor to fuck you," he said, bowing in reverence. Lin couldn't decide if her heart was racing because her blood was boiling or she was actually considering his offer. Bumi had totally transformed since his retirement- he looked good, but more importantly, he looked good naked. His body was toned like never before- leaner but just as burly as he used to be in his prime.
She realized she hadn't responded and she didn't want him getting ideas. "Shut up, Bumi."
"Fine, your loss," he shrugged.
Bumi sat atop at the foot of the bed while Lin continued to look around. He observed the way she scuttled about, her eyes were blown wide with frenzy governing her every movement. It had been a while since he had spent any one-on-one time with Lin, and the last time he did, he had almost asked her out to dinner. You see, he wasn't lying about it being an honor to fuck her. He meant it. And that nonchalant candor was the best way conceal those jitters he felt around her.
"How are you not freaking out?" she asked.
"I mean, we're trapped." he said. "There's no way out. And there's no point in freaking out."
Lin didn't stop to roll her eyes like Bumi imagined. Instead she was shaking. And suddenly, he remembered. Lin had always been a little claustrophobic.
"Hey, why don't you have a seat for a moment."
She gave him an incredulous look.
So he stood up, hand still against his crotch so as to not flash Lin as he made his way over to her. "Relax, Linny. I'm going to get us out of here, okay?"
"Bumi—"
"Shhhhh," he said, rubbing her arm affectionately. "Why don't you lie down on the bed for a moment?"
"Bumi, I—"
"Just one moment. A tiny one, please?"
Lin sighed, but she relented. As she got to the bed, covered in red bedsheets and a matching duvet, she looked over at Bumi's naked form and then stared at the bed. He had his bare buttocks on these very sheets just a second ago. Somehow, that idea didn't bother as much. He was just Bumi, at the end of the day. Bumi who wore bottomless chaps to his brother's anointment. Bumi who ate and drank like a bottomless pit. Bumi who'd side with her whenever Suyin was being a menace. Bumi, who comforted her after Tenzin ended things with her. And that's when she realized- he was trying to comfort her, before her train of thought left the station with- Bumi whose buttocks she really wanted to grab with a firm—
"On the bed now, Linny."
She shook her head and lay down on the bed, staring at the ceiling. "Can you now tell me why you're naked?"
"Oh," he replied. "I wanted to check this prison out, but if I stepped in- the way you did- it'd shut down. So, I was using airbending to float around and I didn't want my clothes to get in the way."
"Oh," she commented with surprise in her voice. "That's actually clever."
"What can I say, I am a clever man, Linny."
She rolled her eyes. "Can you not call me that?"
"I don't think I can," he replied.
When Lin felt a depression on the bed, she glanced to her side to see him smiling down at her. He stroked her hair gently and said, "We'll get you out of here, okay?"
"Bumi, I'm fine. I just don't want to be stuck in here."
"Lin, you're brave. And you can be brave every day of your life. But today, you don't have to. I can take care of you."
She sat up, resting on her palms. "Why are you being so nice to me?"
Bumi snorted. "I'm always nice to you."
She couldn't argue there. It wasn't as if Bumi irritated her on purpose. Maybe she could afford to loosen up a little. Maybe she could be nicer to Bumi going forward. He was kind, funny in the way she hated, ridiculous, infuriating, and smart in the silliest ways, but spirits if he wasn't endearing.
"We should really find a way out," she said.
"Linny, how? Nobody would be able to hear us scream."
Narrowing her eyes at the nickname, instead of addressing it, she said, "So what now?"
"Try to look at the bright side!" he suggested, jovially. "You're getting uninterrupted Bumi time! And I'm naked and it's okay because I'm hot now. Don't think I didn't see your eyes on my ass."
Lin's cheeks turned pink with embarrassment, and Bumi took that as his cue to proposition her again.
"There's a bed too. And it's Suyin's. Why not mark our territory?"
"Bumi," she whispered.
His hand slowly traversed the length of her arm. Her eyes thirstily followed the delicate movement of his fingers until they reached her chin, at which point, he used one finger to tilt her head up towards him.
"Nobody will hear us scream."
"What if someone does come lurking around here?"
"Then, I'll hide you under the bed, get rescued naked and give you the perfect window to escape and then never speak about this again."
Lin couldn't help but smirk. "That does sound enticing."
"And I'm still not hearing a no,"
Lin grabbed his face and slammed her mouth against his. He hummed when her tongue entered his mouth as his hand roamed up and across her torso. With each hand he squeezed her breasts as she climbed atop him. Lin was ravenous and Bumi was all she craved- and he knew that too. And in no world would he want her any less than she wanted him in that moment. Bumi tightened his arms around her back and tossed her down onto the mattress. She landed with a fluffy thud just as Bumi's lips found her neck. Her hands ruffled through his wild hair.
Bumi couldn't remember for how long he had wanted this- his brain had turned to mush. He ran one hand down her breasts, straight through the slim gap between her belly and waistband and massaged her inner thigh perfectly- Lin had to moan to let him know.
"Louder," he growled.
She did not want to test that hypothesis- because what if someone did hear them? Suyin wasn't perfect. So she pulled his mouth on hers to shut them both up.
And that was how Lin Beifong had found herself quite literally thrust in that position.
She found out about an hour later when nobody came running to the trap, as she came, screaming into glory, that the trap was indeed sound proof. She came and then she came another time- her mind was in lost in the clouds of divine bliss.
Lin offered up her handkerchief to him to wipe himself up. There was no telling how long they'd been fucking or how late into the night it had now become where they had been laying in bed holding each other. Bumi had been peppering her cheek and shoulder with soft kisses as they fell in and out of sleep. And it wasn't until morning- or so they thought- when they wordlessly began again on a string of kisses.
Food and water had become all the needs of the sexless. With Lin in his arms, he had everything he needed to survive.
Tumblr media
"I might be getting addicted to you," he whispered by her jaw as he got on top of her. Lin pushed a wild strand of his hair behind his ear before he dipped back down to kiss her.
"We all have our vices," Lin replied on his mouth.
"Still wanna get out of here?"
"You'd have to forcibly pry me out of this place."
Bumi chortled and doubled down on her. There was something to be said about the way this prison had become their own perfect bubble. It was the embrace of the Sphere's Embrace. Whatever their relationship was outside of this bubble had no hold over them while they ravaged the each other. There were no thoughts of ramifications, no worries of what this meant- it was a pure expression of flooding desire- indomitable, delirious desire.
Lin placed her hands against the platinum wall over the bed as Bumi rammed into her from behind. His hands were grasping her ass when she led one over her thigh and down in between her legs. He didn't need to be told what to do there, because by now, he knew her body better than he knew his own.
"I'm getting close," she moaned, as he picked up the pace. His hands were flawlessly menacing her clit, making her whole body scream and sweat with endorphins. Had she known before hand how well their bodies complemented each other, she would've jumped him well before he ever left for the United Forces.
"I can't tell you how long I've wanted this, Lin," he said, verbalizing her exact thoughts.
She felt his teeth on her back and then she couldn't resist it anymore.
"FUCK—" she screamed. "BUMI- I'M—" her voice wavered from a shrill moan into a throaty grunt from the high.
"Shit," Bumi cussed at the sight before him.
A sizzling sound broke through both their moans as Bumi crashed on top of her. Her hands had seemingly crumbled and broken through the sturdy walls of their personal bubble. There was now a massive hole in the wall, as the fresh breeze from the Island wafted inside. The nesting warmth of their ecosystem was gone. It was all cool winds.
Bumi was still recovering, shifting beside her to spoon her from behind as Lin caught her breath.
"We're free," he coughed.
Lin whimpered, still getting off the high, unable to register what Bumi was talking about. She was still sensitive, groaning when Bumi rubbed her arm to catch her attention.
"You broke the wall," he panted. "We're free to leave."
Catching on, Lin quickly sat up in bed to see that the wall behind the bed had indeed disintegrated.
"How did... " she stared at her hands in disbelief.
Bumi sat up too, knitting his eyebrows together. "Did you bend platinum?"
Lin huffed, not looking away from her hands. "Did I?"
"I think I did,"
She glanced back up at the wall and then slowly brought her hands to it. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, feeling at her element encased within what was known to be the purest form of metal. Bumi admired her naked form as she concentrated and within moments, to his shock, the wall tore open.
She gaped at him with shock and he returned the same look of incredulity. It was dark outside, which meant that it had been a full day since their entrapment. As far as Lin knew, the Beifongs of Zaofu were living at Air Temple Island during their visit, so a sneaky, quiet exit was prudent. Luckily, Bumi had left his glider and clothes right behind a tree close to the Sphere's Embrace.
Wordlessly, he got dressed as Lin followed his shadow behind the tree. In a moment, he had his arm around her waist, the other holding up the glider as they took flight.
Heads down, they were silent the whole way to the city. They hadn't exchanged a single word since they had stepped outside the Sphere's Embrace. It had been a challenging twenty-four hours- especially now that they both fell victim to the phenomenon of some kind of captivity attachment.
Once they reached the threshold of her house, it was Bumi who finally cleared throat to terminate the silence. They surely had the same thoughts resounding in their minds that neither wanted to be the first to verbalize.
As she unlocked the door, Bumi stepped forward. "Can I come inside?"
Lin gave him what he thought to be the sexiest smile he had ever seen.
He took that as a yes and followed her in, shutting the door behind him.
Ultimately, while the collapse of the Sphere's Embrace could be a painful and transformative experience into reality, it offered the chance for renewal and the possibility of creating new spheres of embrace that are even more fulfilling and enduring than before. As it turned out, Bumi had found his life-partner in the world's first platinum bender.

It looks like we have some late submissions! Happy to see them!
It's Not Tenzin
Here’s my submission for day 7 of Lin Beifong’s Week. You can also find it on AO3.
Pairing: Lin Beifong x 😏
Rating: G
Art made by JadeLotus💚
Poppy and Lao's ceremonial annual Beifong reunion had been reinstated after decades. Ever since Lin waved a white flag on the family drama, it was meeting after meeting almost every month. Whether it was Suyin’s dance recital or Huan’s exhibition or the plethora of hobbies Wing pursued before its disastrous showcase, Lin was obligated to attend. But the breaking point was when the ticket vendor at the Republic City train station asked Lin if she wanted to buy a monthly pass to Zaofu. That was it. This family had been seeing each other a little too much our Chief was fed up.
And that’s how the annual Beifong reunion came about. Once a year, at a predetermined location, the entire Beifong clan would gather, exchange pleasantries, and well, unpleasantries, and most importantly, were exempt from the remainder of the clan’s activities. "For the rest of the year, voluntary participation only," Zaofu's matriarch had said.
At nineteen years old, Lin couldn’t care less about Suyin’s rampant gossip sessions, but at fifty-eight years old, Lin realized she could care even less about the same.
After a riveting game of power disc in the morning, followed by tea and snacks courtesy of Suyin’s fantastic chef, Lin found herself feeling fresh and rejuvenated. For the first time, she wasn’t counting minutes until she could be back in Republic City.
Little did she know that feeling would be wildly short lived.
Toph and Suyin, amidst conversation, took their seats beside Lin. Su giggled at something her mother said, forcing Lin to repress the grunt that her sister’s shrill voice induced.
“You’ve hated that sound ever since you were six years old,” Toph began.
Lin raised an eyebrow.
“That’s because I was born when she was six years old,” Suyin said, giggling again.
“And you say I remember nothing of your childhoods,” Toph remarked.
Lin didn’t want to engage. Rewinding Beifong memories had always been a risky move- and Lin didn’t intend on drowning after all these years.
“Anyway,” Suyin said, as if reading Lin’s mind, “I was just telling mom about why Bataar’s new interest in—”
“Mmmm, didn’t you tell me all about that last night?” Lin tried cutting her off.
“Oh no,” Su smirked. “This was something that happened last night. You see, it all started because Bataar was missing me in bed since I was with—”
“Suyin, you’re my daughter and I tolerate you in that capacity, but I cannot listen to your sexcapades with that tendril of a man any more than once a day. You already ruined breakfast.”
Lin had never been more thankful for her mother’s quippy interruptions.
Unfortunately, that too would be short lived.
“However,” the blind woman continued, “Zuko was asking me about you, Lin and your sexual life.”
Lin almost choked on her tongue.
“Her sex life?” Suyin echoed, appalled.
“Romantic life. Same thing,” Toph said with a shrug.
“I hope you let him know that there’s nothing to know,” Lin replied with a frown.
“Oh, I would have,” Toph said with a chuckle, “but you see, I don’t lie.”
Lin gawked at her mother. Suyin nodded from side to side, quickly trying to study the expressions on the women’s faces. There was something she didn’t know and that was plain wrong. Suyin had to be in the know about everything and everyone’s business. This was utterly unacceptable and in her own home no less. But as if reading her daughter’s mind- if she could ever read anything- Toph pulled out a dilapidated piece of paper from her pocket. Handing it over to her youngest, she said, “Well then, explain this.”
Suyin gazed at the letter. Her eyes would’ve fallen out of their socket at the sight of a gossip so juicy- something she couldn’t have imagined in her wildest dreams.
“I recognize the handwriting!” she gasped.
Lin moved closer to her sister, face painted with concern over an ambiguous letter, sole anxiety and no heart pumping blood through her veins.
“What is—”
Suyin gasped louder. “Lin! Are you having an affair with Tenzin?!”
“No!” she exclaimed, snatching the letter. Her eyes followed the scripture unorderly. Where was this letter from? Why was it in her belongings? How did her mother, of all people, find it? But most importantly, the penman and contents of this letter rattled her as her vision glazed through it quickly. Realization struck like lightning, forcing her to bite her bottom lip with fear.
“Who else would call you their beloved and use hackneyed words like ‘I love you more than anything, why won’t you believe me’ or—”
“It’s not Tenzin!” Lin reiterated through gritted teeth. “Where did you find this letter?” she glared at Toph and slammed the paper on the table, visibly harrowed by its contents.
“More importantly, who is so in love with our Chief Crankypants?” Suyin asked.
Lin slapped her forehead when Toph burst out laughing. Suyin sneakily grabbed the letter and opened it back up to find the answer to her own question.
Tumblr media
“So, who is it?” Toph asked.
Suyin couldn’t help but hold in her smile as she read through its entirety. Lin didn’t even bother interrupting her as she covered her face with embarrassment.
“Lin,” she said softly, “this is probably the sweetest, most tender love letter I have ever read. But it doesn’t say who it is. They’ve signed their name as ‘your smarter half’ and if that isn’t Tenzin—”
“It's NOT Tenzin!” her voice resounded the room.
“Who’s not Tenzin?”
The Beifong ladies looked up at the sound of the new voice. It was Asami, and behind her, came General Iroh, Avatar Korra and Detective Mako. Now that Bolin had become a Beifong, this had become an extended family reunion.
Lin groaned.
“My sister’s mystery man,” Suyin said with a giggle.
“Mystery man and Lin Beifong!” Korra cooed, bending a gust of wind underneath to prop herself close to the table.
“Korra, please.” Lin grumbled.
“Yes, Korra. Please!” Toph offered jauntily, encouraging the Avatar.
“Where did you find this letter?” she asked again, in a sterner tone.
“I found it hidden in a pillowcase in your bedroom.”
“My bedroom?” Lin asked, wondering if the room in Suyin’s house qualified as ‘her’ bedroom.
“Your old bedroom back at the Beifong mansion in Republic City, obviously.”
Lin rolled her eyes, and Toph didn’t miss it. “Evidently, I couldn’t read it when I found it so I brought it here for someone to read it out to me! Just be grateful I took it to Suyin first.”
As Lin narrowed her eyes, trying to decipher what her mother meant, Korra read the letter out loud to the group to catch them up with its contents.
“Chief!” Mako cackled. “I didn’t realize you liked your men sappy!”
“I mean, she did date Tenzin.” Bolin added.
“IT’S NOT TENZIN!” came the loud response, causing Bolin to convulse in his spot.
“Who is it then, Chief?” Korra laughed.
Lin glanced through the room with apprehension. When her eyes met Asami’s she relaxed and gave her a meek smile.
“Let me start here- when Tenzin was away visiting the air temples with his father, we weren’t exactly together,” Lin entwined her fingers together, thinking on how to proceed. Being caught totally unawares by this letter into a nook of her past made it difficult to relay. “So, at the time I was seeing someone from school. We had a bit of an on-again-off-again relationship and—”
“Gosh, Lin! Who is it?” Suyin cried with excitement.
Lin brought one hand up to silence her and continued, “Asami, before your father met Yasuko, he and I were... Well,” she shrugged. “But believe me, your mother was the love of his life. He told me so himself.”
Tears would've broken through Asami’s eyes at the mention of her father but thankfully she was smiling. Although she deeply missed him, she discovered happiness in the idea of connecting with someone else with whom she could reminisce about her father's memories.
“I’m sorry, Asami,” Lin said. “Your father was a wonderful man.”
“This took a weird turn,” Toph mumbled.
“Mom!” Su nudged her mother.
“He made his mistakes but, there was so much good in that man.”
Iroh was now gently rubbing Asami’s back as she nodded along.
“And Su,” she said, turning to her sister, “you recognize the handwriting because I saved all of Hiroshi’s notes from school for you. He was a brilliant student and I wanted that for you. Whatever little you did end up studying were all his brush strokes.”
Suyin smiled and squeezed her sister's arm affectionately. Korra placed the letter back in front of Lin and gave her a smile too.
“It’s good to remember the dead,” the Avatar said. “Grief is the expression of love in the face of loss; as we shed tears for what is gone, it's equally important to commemorate the love that once was..”
“I miss the less spiritual Korra,” Toph scoffed.
Asami chuckled out loud though. "Yes, Korra, that's right. If you're ever up for it, Chief, I would love to learn more about your time with dad during his school days."
"You can come talk to me anytime," she smiled.
As if to annihilate the saccharine fest in the room, Toph groaned. "I was hoping this would've been a scandalous letter from your mafia boyfriend from back in the day." Everyone gasped, as the blind woman continued, “Because I already told Zuko about your reunion with that firebending menace."
"What—”
Lin cheeks were pinker than a dragon bird spirit.
"That's why I brought this letter to you first," she said, turning towards Suyin. "You don't want this letter getting in her current boyfriend's hands. I hear he's the jealous type."
Now all Vaatu broke lose and getting the name out of Lin’s lips. She couldn't be in Republic City soon enough.

Floating Back in Love
Here’s my submission for day 6 of Lin Beifong’s Week. You can also find it on AO3.
Pairing: Lin Beifong x Tenzin
Rating: T
Art made by JadeLotus💚 And inspiration brought to you by @ilovelin
“Lin, come on! I never ask you of anything!” he cried.
Bumi had been following Lin all evening, chasing her from crime scene to crime scene, the precinct and back. He would’ve followed her into the lady’s room too if it weren’t for the metal bars she erected in front of the door.
“Please, please, please- I will never ask you for anything else.”
They were now in her office. It was nearing midnight and Bumi was not even close to quitting. Lin was wrapping up her paperwork for the day as he continued trying to persuade her to no avail.
“Bumi,” she groaned, gently slamming her head to the back of her chair in frustration. “Why won’t you just take no for an answer? Has Tenzin not crushed your spirits sufficiently?”
“Well, Tenzin’s on some other kind of bender right now,” he said, chuckling slightly. “You won’t believe what he’s up to.”
She had to admit it piqued her interest, but there was no way she was going to ask him about it. After years of animosity, Lin thought she had finally reached a good place in her relationship with Tenzin. They were friends- not close friends, but friends. Friends who knew and understood each other like nobody else did. Friends who couldn’t function being anything more or less than friends. Friends, that she thought were once soulmates, that weren’t, ultimately.
“But coming back, to ME,” he said emphatically. “Please, Lin! Please, please, please—”
“Why is this so important you, Bumi?” she asked, sighing loudly.
“I hear his sister is wayyyyy sluttier than me,” he explained. “I really need to, no, must screw her—”
“Don’t want to hear it!” Lin cringed, raising her hands in surrender. “Why do you need me to court some girl you know is promiscuous enough to sleep with the likes of you?”
“Court—” he laughed to himself, but quickly recovered when he saw Lin’s nostrils flare. “Thing is, she doesn’t quite leave the Fire Nation enough. She’s only going to be here because, her brother, a member of the cabinet of ministers in Izumi’s council is bringing her as his date.”
“Okay?”
“And if you snag the brother to be your date at the Annual Summit’s gala, I get that lovely lassy all to myself.”
“Bumi, I won’t be attending the gala as a guest. Remember my job?” she asked, gesturing around the room they were currently seated in.
“Taken care of that! I’ve got the airbenders to provide security, courtesy of my dear little brother. Mako has promised that he’ll take care of everything and lead your officers.”
Lin scoffed. “And what makes you think I’d be okay with that?”
“Because Kenzo is quite the looker?”
“Try again,” she deadpanned.
“Why? When have I ever let you down?”
Lin scoffed. “The last time you set me up with someone, it was a complete disaster.”
“What? Why?” he asked, standing up to demonstrate his shock.
“That guy was such a pervert. He tried sliding his hand down my pants!”
“That’s fantastic!” Bumi cried.
“What? No! In what world—”
“A patriarchal one where men don’t finish women off—”
A heavily scandalized Lin stood up and clapped his mouth shut. “Don’t ruin sex for me!”
Bumi laughed like a maniac. His lips tickled her hand, so she quickly moved it away. “Come on, Lin. When was the last time you—”
“Don’t—”
“Mr. Perv was probably wiping off the cobwebs—”
“Are you forgetting that you need me right now?”
“Fine, fine, fine,” he said, walking around her desk towards her. “Please, I really need a distraction. Tenzin is driving me crazy and, Lin, this guy’s great. I promise he won’t try any funny business. I’ve done my research with Song and Mako about your perimeter check- the whole nine yards. I even bought you an evening gown and got Opal to do your hair. It’s three months from now, so even if you change your mind, which I hope you won’t, I’ll call it off. But please, please please, please—”
“Why can’t any of your other female friends do this?”
“You’re the only one I haven’t slept with,” he said with a meek grin. “We could change that if you like, though…” he trailed off so his eyebrows could jump suggestively to finish his sentence.
She pinched her nose in thought and looked over at him. She wanted to ask what was going on with Tenzin, but she bit her tongue. Instead, she said, “Fine. It’s a date.”
Bumi hadn’t lied, she thought back. She was wearing a long, forest green gown made of the finest of silks- it was so reminiscent of Gaoling and Poppy Beifong. The thin straps streamlined up her clavicles to meet the back of her neck, secured by a neat bow. Lin was aware of how low her dress was cut and a small part of her wanted Kenzo’s eyes to linger a little, but alas, he was by far the least exciting person she had ever met. He not only talked in a slow drawl, but also exclusively talked only about his own very uninteresting interests.
She had been on worst dates, she admitted. And the only thing she wanted to do then was escape. From the corner of her eye, she saw Bumi giving her a thumbs-up, leading the curly haired bombshell of a woman towards the exit with him. Seeing that as her cue, Lin’s dress bounced behind her as she made her way to the balcony for an escape.
The past three months had been exceedingly tumultuous. Nearly every day Lin found herself learning new-fangled ideas about the occurrences at Air Temple Island.
First, it was Rohan and Pema coming in for records of domicile. Next, it was Mako receiving a call from Korra about information on lawyers. After that, it was Ikki being arrested for some petty crime. And finally, it was Tenzin. He showed up, rage blowing in the wind around him, to the precinct, likely to bail his little girl out.
Lin felt it obligatory to see him and talk things through in her office. The last thing she needed was Tenzin’s children turning into mini Suyins around her city.
“I take that you’re here for your daughter?” she began.
“Actually, no,” he whispered. “I want her to serve her sentence to the fullest. I also want her to see me here, expecting to be bailed out only to spend the next two nights here.”
“One complaint from the holding cell and I kick her out,” Lin warned.
Tenzin laughed aloud while she awkwardly stood there, waiting for him to stop. He was not acting like himself and Lin didn’t know how to behave. He calmed himself a few moments later, and smirked at Lin. “She’s just acting up, you know? Divorced parents- terrible father—”
“Tenzin!”
He blinked at her blankly.
“What’s going on with you?”
“I got divorced,” he said softly. His demeanor had totally changed. He looked somber now, emoting with his face instead of that frightening numbness. At least it seemed sincere. “It’s been very trying.”
“I’m sorry,” she said, placing her hand on his shoulder. “Is there any way I can help, old friend?”
Tenzin took her hand in his and squeezed it. “You’ve been perfect, Lin. Thank you for being my friend.”
“Of course,” she whispered. “I’m here for you.”
He snaked his arms around her back and hugged her lightly. She placed her arms on his shoulder and pat his back delicately. His arms glided over her back and squeezed her further into his body. She felt his beard by her neck and then she felt his kiss on her skin.
“Tenzin,”
His lips brushed over her ear and then down her cheek to find her mouth. They ghosted over her lips- it was a mere touch- when she stiffened and gently pulled away.
“We shouldn’t—”
“Yes,” he agreed. “I should leave.”
“Yeah.”
“I need to process—”
“You should.”
Now, at the balcony, Lin started remembering being Tenzin’s date. How they’d sneak away to hide from the boring lots like her current date. Sometimes, they’d fool around- and it was cute. And now it wasn’t because Lin could feel Tenzin’s lips haunting hers.
Abruptly, there was a switch in the wind. Instead of blowing in her face, it was now pushing her hair into her face. She looked straight into the horizon to see if the waves in Yue Bay had changed course when suddenly, Tenzin appeared right in front of her face.
Startled, Lin raised the stone platform to defend herself, and Tenzin just chuckled softly. He was seated on his air scooter and smiling- ever the picture of Aang if Lin could believe it.
“What are you doing here?!” she asked, still reeling from her start, bending the parapet back into place.
“Bumi told me you needed to be rescued from a boring gala, and, from an oath I swore on a mangled fruit pie about forty-five years ago, I’d always save you from any and all dull social engagements.”
Lin was taming her hair when Tenzin reached a hand out to help. “Sorry, I had to borrow some wind to fly up,” he said softly.
“When did Bumi talk to you?”
“He radioed me from the conference room downstairs,” he told her. “So, I flew right in.”
“That’s- thanks, Tenzin,” she whispered. “But I think I’ll be okay.”
“I’m sorry about the last time I saw you. It was… Difficult. Seeing you brought back a lot of feelings.”
“It’s fine, Tenzin,” she said.
“No, it’s not. I shouldn’t have tried to- anyway,” he replied. “How can I make your evening better?”
“I don’t think there’s all that much you can do,” she said. “I’m destined to a boring evening.”
Tenzin scoffed with amusement. “Of course not, Lin. So long as I’m here, the fate of your evening is in my hands.”
Lin snorted. He always knew how to make her laugh. “Why are you doing this?”
“Because,” he shrugged, beaming. “I have vowed to spend the rest of my life doing right by you. Whether it’s from a distance or floating right here to keep you company. I’ve done enough damage to your—”
“Tenzin, why?”
“I owe you all that you deserve and more.”
Lin shook her head. She rested her forearms on the parapet and placed her chin on top. Tenzin’s eyes gleamed at the sight.
“You’re beautiful, Lin. And that doesn’t even begin to cover why I have admired you my whole life.”
“Are you hitting on me, airhead?”
“Maybe.”
“You have to try harder, then.”
Tenzin flew over the parapet and landed beside her. She tilted her head sideways as he placed one hand on her arm. “Those green eyes you have could be the death of me,” he whispered.
Lin straightened up and turned to face him.  “What do you want?”
“One chance,” he said. “Let me take you out on one date. Let me prove myself to you- to show you I’ve grown and just how much you’ve changed me.”
Lin rolled her eyes. “One date. That is all I will agree to.”
Overjoyed, Tenzin stepped forward and proffered his arms out. Lin ran into them and held him close. It was strange in a new way how they ended up hugging. She couldn’t help but relax in his arms. He was warm, comfortable and he smelled like home like he always did. She felt him squeeze her tighter as a drop of water touched her temple. At that she hugged him closer, ignoring the feeling that she was floating- because he’d always make her feel that way. Then, she turned up to face him and saw a single stray tear left on his cheek. But when she brought her hand up to wipe it was when she realized—
Tumblr media
Immediately, she looked down.
They were not only a long distance from the gala, but also from the Earth. Best of all, there wasn’t an air scooter in sight.
“Tenzin,” she said fearfully.
He hummed.
“Tenz, we’re flying—”
“Wha—”
The airbender realized he had started soaring. Let go of his Earthly tether he did. He had entered a void in his embrace with Lin. Empty, and he became the wind.
“You’re not my Earth, Lin. You’re my wind.” His voice was hoarse from shock.
Lin was less than thrilled, however. “Sure, but let’s get back down to Earth, and—”
“We had it wrong this whole time. You’re my wind and I’m your Earth. We’re not bound by manmade tethers. It’s our very souls—”
“Tenzin!” she screamed. “Put me down this instant!”
He chuckled before pressing an innocent kiss to her cheek. “Yes, my soulmate.”

Red
Written for Lin Beifong's Week (Day 6: Soulmates)
Pairing: Lin Beifong/Bumi II
--
When Lin was a young girl, she was told many stories.
Of course, there were ones about her mother and her friend’s heroics in the Hundred Years War and beyond– they’ve become part of regular conversations growing up. There were the outlandish ones made up by her Uncle Sokka, though– those never failed to make her laugh– and countless others about the spirits and mystical creatures that populated the world around them and beyond.
Of them all there was one that struck Lin in particular. The story of Red.
Yue was the goddess of the moon, the one who worked harmoniously with the ocean spirit La. Yes, this was the story everyone had become familiar with for many years.
However, what many did not know was Yue’s reach as the matchmaker goddess.
How? What did that mean?
Through the color red.
The Red strings of fate. A person’s connection to others manifested through these strings. Friendships, family, and other relationships, the people someone meets can make an impact on their life in one way or another.
Forever connected through a kind of love.
Hearing this story for the first time, Lin bounced about, giddy with curiosity. Green eyes widened the size of dinner plates and sparkled brilliantly.
Was this story true? What would this mean for her when she was older?
The mind buzzed with the possibilities. She could not wait to grow up.
When Lin went to bed that night, she dreamt of red.
***
Lin hated the color red.
As it turned out, red was not her color.
Good fortunes, her ass.
Red. It was the color of loss.
The blood shed from her comrades when the missions she led went wrong. Especially the first one. That one always stayed with her. It turned to a festering sore that was never able to fully heal.
One seemingly minor detail missed, one rash call, and the world shifted on its head.
Telling parents and significant others of their losses did not get any easier. Flashbacks of their ear piercing cries, the sight of all the blood. There was so much of it and she was unable to do a thing about it.
She shuddered so hard her bones ached.
As the years went on, the weight became increasingly heavy. Day by day she internalized the guilt, letting it accumulate. This was the burden she had to bear. Lin grit her teeth and carried on.
It was the color of betrayal.
The blood that spattered across her cheek when Suyin rebuffed her disapproval of her lifestyle and turned against her.
A finger trailed down the side of her face in remembrance of the incident before it fell to her side limply.
Though they have become few and far between nowadays, there were still moments when she could hear the metal cables snapping and feel the resulting blinding pain if she thought about it too long.
She clenched her fists. Tight enough her knuckles blanched. Nails were too damned short to break the skin of the palm of her hand. A heated exhale through her nose accompanied a severe rake through loose hair. Desperate for another distraction and feel something.
Red. It was anger. It was the color she saw when she found out about… her… and them.
“Look, Lin. We have been growing apart for a long time now. We are completely different people. It was time we admit we are going down different paths in life.”
“Then you talk to me like the adults we are!” she screeched. “Or rather, supposed to be,” raising a wary eye at the acolyte who was still clinging onto Tenzin’s arm.
“Tenzin and I are soulmates,” she chimed in. “You can’t give him what he wants. What he needs.”
The audacity– “Who are you interrupting our conversation?!”
“Don’t talk to Pema that way!” he warned.
Pema…
The air suddenly pulled from her lungs. Shock and hurt flashed across her face before settling to fierce anger. “You cannot tell me what to do. Not now. Not ever.”
“Lin!”
Tenzin’s call to her was drowned out by the blood thundering in her ears. She turned away in a blind fury, desperate to go somewhere. Anywhere. Nowhere. Lin moved directionless through blurred tears, the earth beneath her feet led her way out.
Those times when she went to bed at the end of the day, Lin rolled away from the moon’s light.
Some nights, she tried to think about those stories she used to hear as a little girl. The thoughts made her curl in on herself before pulling the covers up to swallow her whole.
Red was nothing more than a childish dream. Now that she was older, she knew better.
Her sleeps became dreamless.
***
Lin did not believe in soulmates. She found it to be a preposterous idea.
To find and have someone who is connected to you with happiness and good fortune? Give her a break.
But–
When Bumi returned to Republic City from his United Forces deployment, the first person he wanted to see was her.
It had been years since they saw each other last. He looked good in his red and gold uniform. Really good. Down to his wild hair and couple of buttons fastened askew. Even with how brutal being part of the United Forces can be, especially in his position, Bumi was still… Bumi.
The breath of fresh air he helped bring into her life was hard to ignore.
When he tried to treat Lin to a bouquet of flowers and strawberry shortcake for her birthday. It was the first one they spent together.
“Bumi, I appreciate the thought, but I’m not touching that.”
“What? It’s not like I made it. We’ve been through that mess before. Got it from PikPak’s Pastries,” thumbing in a vague direction over his shoulder outside. “It’s light and looks good.” He waggled his eyebrows and wore that classic rakish grin.
“I’m allergic to strawberries,” she deadpanned.
He froze. “Really? Well– ha–,” he raked a hand through his coarse hair and smiled sheepishly. “Sabotage! Sabotage, I tell you! I thought I had this whole evening set up with dinner and a dessert. Of course it would not all go to plan. Strawberry cake and flowers… foolproof romantic treat in theory, yeah? Well such is not my style it seems,” he chuckled.
“Hey–” she gently cupped his cheek, smiling kindly. “You know, they sell another one that is similar and made with cherries instead.”
Bumi immediately perked up. “Cherries, yeah! Cherries are good!”
She softly nodded with a warmth in her eyes. “Cherries are good.”
The two took the trip hand in hand to the bakery and picked up fresh slices.
The rest of the night was spent in, exchanging stories and taking comfort in the other’s company.
It was a happy birthday. One of the best ones she had in a while.
When Bumi and Lin would settle into bed for the night, his arms brought her in tight, cradling her head and waist. A tender kiss placed on her forehead before gently whispering, “Goodnight, Linny. Love you.”
Lin melted into his embrace, turning her head into the crook of his neck to whisper, “Good night. I love you, too.” Eyes fluttered, she was a breath away from slumber.
For an instant, Lin glanced over Bumi’s shoulder and caught the moon in their bedroom window.
Bright and whole, it illuminated the night smiling down at her.
Lips curved up slowly before sleep overtook the couple for the night.
Maybe–
Just maybe.
Red wasn’t so bad of a color after all.

The Lipstick Thief
Here’s my submission for day 5 of Lin Beifong’s Week. You can also find it on AO3.
Pairing: Lin Beifong x Bumi II
Rating: T
Art made by JadeLotus💚
“Are you in love?” he asked, out of nowhere.
Lin’s eyes blew wide open. She would’ve spat her drink out she hadn’t already choked on it, coughing in response.
“No- no, I’m not,” she stuttered through coughs. “Why do you ask?”
“I’m just wondering,” he said as if in deep thought “What’s keeping you in Republic City? If it isn’t a person or the job, you’re clearly miserable doing- why are you still there?”
“You’re right. There’s nothing and nobody keeping me here. I’m just trapped in a legacy like you and your brother.”
Bumi ingested her words before responding. “Join the United Forces,” he said. “It worked for me- I mean- feeling trapped in a legacy and then joining this- away from the city, the Island, everything. Your life is your own. Besides, you’d be good at the job and a great asset to whatever unit you join.”
This was four years ago. Recently, the former Chief Lin Beifong was going by General Lin Beifong. Climbing the ranks with her unmatchable work ethic was easy- even training with the bulky men of the UF was a walk through the garden. However, Lin missed her element greatly. Being constantly floating through the never-ending mirage of ocean, she craved for some Earth to her touch. There was plenty metal abode the ship, but nothing compared to the grounding she felt from her element.
Suited in her new uniform that was embellished with a smattering of metal, Lin was leaning against the railing that evening, staring into the emptiness beyond the sky and sea. She also hated the wooden flooring of the ship, because she would never know when she was being snuck up on. But most times than not, it was Bumi, and in this instance, it was the same Commander.
“May I bask in your melancholy, General Beifong?” he asked, sliding beside her.
Lin rolled her eyes, still looking at the sunset. “Do what you want, it’s your ship.”
“Oh, how I wish. I’d throw so many overboard.”
Lin’s lips betrayed her and spread out into half a smile. She knew Bumi’s eyes were on her and she could sense his satisfaction in making her smile.
“What do you want, Bumi?”
“I know you’re unhappy here,” he said.
Lin sighed. “I’m unhappy anywhere I go. So don’t take it personally.”
He placed one hand on her back and rubbed it gently. “They’re having a little party in the mess, if you’d like to come.”
“I’m good—”
She had barely replied and Bumi already knew what her answer was going to be. “Come on, now! Snap out of this gloominess. Let me take you dancing.”
“Bumi, I’m really not in the mood—”
“Not listening!”
He pulled her by the arm so that she’d face him and then tugged her away from the railing. Before she could get a word out, he quickly said, “Go slap on some lipstick and meet me back in the messdeck- this is an order from your commanding officer.”
“Bumi, you can’t play that card!”
“Fine!”
He plucked something out of his pocket and handed it to her. It was lipstick. Her lipstick. Her lipstick that she hadn’t used in over four years. She gawked at it for a minute and then scowled at Bumi. “You went through my stuff!”
“Lin, you need to go to this thing. You need to make some friends. You’re isolating yourself and feeling lonely, and sure, that may work in cities, but not on the sea! You need some socializing.”
Lin groaned and snatched the lipstick from his hand. She bent the metal plate off her sleeve and flattened it onto Bumi’s chest to use as a mirror.
Once she was done, she slid it into her back pocket and gave Bumi a look that challenged him to try and steal it again.
But instead, he gave her a genuine smile. “Why do you always have to look this damned good?”
She smacked his belly and said, “Shut up,” as she started to walk away. Bumi followed behind, chortling on his way.
The party was far bigger than what Bumi had described. Everyone was there, from the chef to the sweeper. It wasn’t just an affair for the military folks, no, it was for everyone. The music rose and the lights gleamed throughout the mess- it had never looked so glorious.
Bumi escorted his lady with him, hand delicately leading hers until they reached the dance floor.
“May I have this dance, my lady?”
She smiled and played along by tightening her fingers around his. In one swift motion, he pulled her close, securing one hand on her waist and she fell forward against his chest. He beamed and she bit her bottom lip. Thereafter, all their communication was through dance. Bumi moved like the wind, spinning and twirling his lady with the rhythm of the music. Lin felt weightless in his hands. He was strong, and his muscles felt taut under her palms.
Belatedly, Lin felt eyes on her. Amidst her trance, she found that she was right. They were the only two people remaining on the dance floor and they had also gathered quite the audience. They cheered and hooted with every spin and every lift. It was truly magical. Lin hadn’t felt this way since- since—
Since Tenzin.
She stiffened a touch and Bumi dipped her low. Her face was of the makings of shock and fear while Bumi was the picture of rich enchantment. When he pulled her back up, the music stopped. There was heavy silence until the crowd broke into cheers. The light shone over Bumi in a manner that blinded her to everything else. He was all she saw. All she wanted to see. And all she probably wanted but could never have. Bumi was a man of honor. He’d never try to date, let alone sleep with, his brother’s ex-girlfriend.
Tumblr media
He was maybe too good of a friend, now.
A distraught General was seen fleeing the scene. And a concerned Commander was seen chasing after her.
“Lin!” he called after her.
“This is not what I signed on for!” she cried, still sprinting across the deck.
He finally got up to speed before grabbing her wrist. “Lin, what’s going on?”
“Bumi, this is- this is too much,” she said, turning towards him. “I can’t do this.”
“We’re sailing back to Republic City,” he revealed, ultimately. “I just wanted you to have a good night before we—”
“What?”
“The equalists- there’s an uprising in Republic City. The avatar, Korra’s there too with Tenzin and—”
“WHAT?”
“Linny, you’re miserable here. I’m bringing you back.”
“Bumi, I have feelings for you.”
It was his turn to widen his eyes in shock.
“I got you your job back at the RCPD.”
Lin sighed. She pinched her nose in horror and looked back at him.
“I am retiring.”
“What?”
“I’m retiring,” he repeated. “I’m going to stay back with you.”
“Bumi, you love this—”
“And I’m in love with you. I have been for longer than I am willing to admit.” He leaned into her space and cupped her cheek with one hand.
To his surprise, it was Lin who kissed him feverously.
Once he pulled away, his hand on her ass, he whispered in her ear, “I have your lipstick.”

Lin Beifong’s Week: Day Two “A Long Night”
(Decided to feed all my Linzolt shippers. Deeply sorry for the late submission I’m a very busy woman. Side note to a particular someone this may or may not be the chaos I spoke of and that you said you would be excited to read.)
“The apartment was empty, the silence deafening. There was no soft laughter or humming or any of the other sounds he’d grown accustomed to; that he’d begun to expect.”

It's giving "Happy Birthday Mr. President" in the best possible way!
Meilin for the win!
Written for Lin Beifong's Week (Day 4: Clandestine Meetings)
"Linny?"
“Meet me at the Four Elements in half an hour,” she said, her voice low and sultry.
He sighed. “Baby, I’m working tonight—.”
“Top floor, presidential suite. Don’t be late.” She hung up before he could get a word in edgewise.
A grin spread on Zolt’s face as he placed the phone back on the receiver. That woman would be the death of him. He knew.
