'Minecraft' Studio Wants nothing to do With NFTs
Don't be expecting to purchase a creeper skin as an NFT (non-fungible token) and connect it to your Minecraft server in the near future. Mojang has taken a strong position against the game's use of NFTs and blockchain technology. "[Toensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe, inclusive experience Blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications, nor may it be used to create NFTs associated to any in-game content including worlds and skins, persona objects, or other mods," Mojang stated in a statement. It will soon update the game's guidelines accordingly.
Minecraft has a marketplace where people can sell their creations for others to use. Mojang mentions that some companies recently started offering NFTs that can be used in connection to the game. There are NFTs that are associated with Minecraft skin packs and world files that people can purchase. The studio claimed it might have been possible for players to earn Minecraft NFTs for tasks that they completed within the game or in other places. Mojang is not on board with any of that.
"Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies result in digital ownership built on exclusion and scarcity, which does not align with Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity and playing with each other," it said. "NFTs do not include all members of our community, and create a situation of haves and have-nots." WOLF SCRIPT
While Minecraft server owners are able to charge for access, Mojang rules state that everyone should have access the same features and content. "NFTs however, may create models of exclusion and scarcity that conflict with our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft," the studio stated.
Mojang also expressed its concern over the speculative nature of NFTs and pointed out that some were sold at "artificially or fraudulently overinflated prices." In light of the fact that Minecraft has millions of young players and is a popular game, it's probably not an ideal idea for the game to support NFTs. Mojang stated that NFTs have a speculative pricing model and investment mindset distracts players from the game and encourages profiteering. This is not in line with the long-term happiness of our players.
The studio and its parent company Microsoft have a reasons to be cautious about NFTs and blockchain tech. There has been a strong protest from the gaming community against these technologies. Additionally, cryptocurrency prices have plummeted and the NFT market has dwindled. The former leader in the world of blockchain gaming, Axie Infinity, was the victim of a massive hack (with victims losing out as a result) and its daily player numbers have fallen by more than two-thirds over the past few months.
Some other major gamers have already stayed clear of NFTs and blockchain. In October, Steam banned games that enable cryptocurrency and NFT trading. Sony recently announced the launch of a PlayStation rewards program that includes digital collectibles. The company stressed that these can't be traded , and that the program does not include NFTs or blockchain.
However, Mojang isn't completely rejecting the blockchain. The company said it will monitor the development of blockchain technology to "determine if it will allow for safer experiences or other useful and inclusive applications in gaming."
