Nothing infuriates me more than an entire fandom picking up a stupid take and mindlessly reiterating it everywhere. Eg. „Guys remember Suzanne only writes when she has something to say“ and they act like it’s their original thought too. Like woah that must hit so hard (if you’re stupid).

I really dislike the takes I keep seeing from The Hunger Games fandom to the tune of "Systemic oppression, violence, poverty, and trauma shouldn't make you bitter or angry, and that's why Peeta is a good person and Gale isn't <3" and I really don't like what it says about our culture as a whole when it sees anger as a response to oppression as a character flaw.

my anti sotr posts are getting a lot of interaction so i feel like saying more idk let a girl rant. i feel like prior to this book i would have said thg is one of the better fandom spaces. but omg this book has made me realise how bad it is.

“but we needed to know how haymitch met wiress and beetee and mags!!” i assumed through mentoring? i didn’t need to know the specifics. i have an imagination.

“but we learnt the revolution didn’t start with katniss!!” that’s literally explicit in the original books. we knew that already.

“but we needed to know why haymitch was a depressed alcoholic!!” oh silly me i thought it was because his mother & brother were murdered and then he had to mentor 26 tributes to their deaths??? idk i didn’t need it explained.

“but we needed to know it was all propaganda!!” i mean.. we are explicitly told there’s a shit load of propaganda in panem? we know some of katniss’s games are edited. haymitch does not have a more unique relationship to propaganda than katniss does in the original, so what was the point? it’s almost as if a character such as… idk… PLUTARCH would have been a more interesting perspective on the topic? or idk Beetee? or Effie even?

All i’ve learnt from this book is that a lot of the people who swear they have “critical thinking skills” actually would fall for actual propaganda bc they’ve completely taking this bad book at face value and calling it a masterpiece because they don’t know how to read between the lines.

Haymitch makes a beeline for his cliff and has just reached the edge when she throws the ax. He collapses on the ground and it flies into the abyss. Now weaponless as well, the girl just stands there, trying to staunch the flow of blood pouring from her empty eye socket. She's thinking perhaps that she can outlast Haymitch, who's starting to convulse on the ground. But what she doesn't know, and what he does, is that the ax will return. And when it flies back over the ledge, it buries itself in her head. The cannon sounds, her body is removed, and the trumpets blow to announce Haymitch's victory.

even more impressively, without Peeta's input,

The sixteen-year-old boy who won the second Quarter Quell must have had people he loved - family, friends, a sweetheart maybe -that he fought to get back to. Where are they now? How is it that until Peeta and | were thrust upon him, there was no one at all in his life? What did Snow do to them?

which is why this:

Me when SOTR defenders say we disliked the book because "we already knew the plot," "it disrupted our headcanons," or "we fell for the propaganda" and not because the book contradicts things Haymitch himself said, the characterization of everyone sucks, and Suzanne Collins spends a lot more time saying shit than actually showing shit:
