personality: sharp-witted, reasonable, calm, collected… and sassy. he’s a fighter with finesse, a flirt, and a bit of a menace. he might seem aloof, even judgemental, often donning a smirk, but he cares deeply (though you’d never know it unless he lets you).

he’s confident in his fighting skills, and in his looks. he likes to taunt and gently mock. he means things well though; he only ever aims to hurt those he doesn’t care about. those he loves? he has an absolute soft spot for. he can easily drop all of his facade at a moment’s notice if it’s needed, and turn into a gentle, comforting creature, thoughtful and attentive.

he’s protective, especially of his mate (kane) to a fault. he’s less brave than him (or less reckless, you could argue), and he knows it. more aware and afraid of the potential of things crumbling and collapsing and people dying. he holds some dread, and a lot of fear, but you wouldn’t be able to tell normally.

nico’s lived his whole life in a world that detested vexes as violent beasts, good only for slaughter, like monsters in the dark. he was forced to adapt quickly, learning to fight, stay soft footed, quiet, and have sharp aim. all of that helped him to survive—more than that, he became one of the best warriors of their little vex commune. 

all he knew were emotional barriers and snark. admiration from afar, distance from everyone. he didn’t expect kane. not the puppy like crush, not the earnest warmth, not the brute force of his sincerity. but eventually, nico's guard cracked—and now they’re more than just partners on the battlefield. (so, so much more.)

and then scar and grian crashed into their little comune, and nico’s had a lot more to learn, it turns out. slowly, over the time, he grew emotional attachments (and attunement), and became the unlikeliest thing he ever thought he could be: a flock, with an avian and his vex mate, and nico’s own (equally vex) mate. and… turns out, he likes it.

relationships: 

kane: incredibly close relationship. kane’s his boyfriend, his partner, his mate. they are endlessly devoted and in love, even if it took them a while to figure out how to navigate each other. turns out, they slot together surprisingly well. he thinks kane makes him better.

scar: nico’s a little gay for him. the more nico’s attachment grew to both scar and grian, the more his worldview shifted and he started accepting his softer, more vulnerable emotions. he often gravitates near scar, offering attention and comfort, a sort of grounding if grian isn’t around to offer it instead.

grian: nico originally pegged grian as doomed (pretty wings don’t last in this world) so he didn’t care much at the start. but grian’s proved him wrong, in turn earning respect and curiosity. they eventually formed a close, tight-knit relationship built on trust, affection, heartfelt moments, and fierce protectiveness.

personality: kane’s full of trying hard, but he’s not good at showing it through. he speaks before he thinks, acts before he speaks—it’s a mess. his temper is quick to flare up, and equally as quick to douse. he wants to be strong, and proud, and… good. it’s not the value he grew up with, but buried deep in his chest is a heart that is full and soft and kind, despite all of his missteps and clumsy words and sharp edges.

he grew up to be one of the strongest warriors of the commune, looked up to and admired. it comes with many pressures, but he bears them with clumsy grace.

life to him means ruthless fighting and harsh survival… that is, until scar and grian show up.

nico: kane had a crush first and kept expressing his love despite his reputation as a strong warrior. he loves nico with all of his being. starry eyed, clingy love. physically close. they learned to understand each other and somehow slotted together like puzzle pieces against all odds. can’t imagine a life where they’re not together.

grian: at first, kane was really unsure about grian; he’s never been close to anyone who wasn’t a vex, and avians were a disposable, dying breed his whole life. but grian somehow burrows his way in, straight to kane’s heart, making him weak. kane is fiercely protective of grian. he wants to give him good things/experiences and safety, a repayment for grian making their commune feel more alive. he might have a bit of a crush. 

scar: despite their rocky beginning, kane looks up to scar. he’s been learning that the world is made of more than just fighting and surviving, and scar’s been a big part of that. he’s a source of inspiration and knowledge, and kane wants to offer anything good his own world holds in return. scar’s trust (especially regarding to grian) means everything to him.

on the other end of this apocalyptic event, scar finds himself transported to a drab, ruthless world where pain is loud and singular death means things are over. he’s seen as a dangerous hybrid, one worth hunting down for boasting rights and a trophy—a laughable thought for someone as soft, harmless, and accident-prone as him.

suddenly, he finds himself attacked and struggling for survival.

then he finds grian, the one person he knows from his old life, and they instantly cling to each other. they’re the last thing the other has left, and they are not letting go.

eventually, through hardships, cruelty, and close calls, they find their way to a vex commune that is willing to take them in. despite being a vex, scar doesn’t know a lot about his own species or instincts. he was taken from a dangerous vex place when he was a child, and he never prodded at his origins to find out more. 

now, in the heart of a commune where he’s surrounded by vexes, he gets to explore what it means to be one. he’s already started unthinkingly leaning into instincts and powers for survival, the one thing solidly keeping both him and grian alive, but now he’s given safer grounds to figure things out: is he really inherently a beast the hunters paint him as, or can he be a vex and still remain himself? a gentle, purring creature?

he forms attachments in the vex commune, watches his own partner (grian) come out of his shell as the safety sinks in, and somewhere along the lines, he learns to be a little more okay with who—or what—he is.

relationships: 

grian: scar’s had a crush on grian since the first time he saw him. they spent years getting closer, but never making a move. not until they found themselves in a world where they could die any moment. scar’s helplessly smitten. lovesick. they share unhealthy dependency. separation anxiety. mated pair.

kane: scar got into some clashes with kane at first, mostly on grian’s behalf. but they spoke the vex language of fighting things out (something that’s novel to scar), and kane eventually started listening. now they share a close bond, where scar trusts kane with grian fully (a rare, really big thing!!) they spar a lot and are physically close. scar is still a menace and loves to fluster kane (often with the aid of both grian and nico, much to kane’s dismay.)

nico: despite the original distance, scar grew close with nico. they share that mixture of quiet-sassy-teasing-loving-knowing companionship. nico is attentive and watches over scar, especially when grian can’t do it himself. he’s there to catch scar and offer some comfort and stability when scar needs it, and scar is ready to return the favour.

he internalises guilt until it suffocates, but tries to push past it and leave it his own problem. he’s clever, resourceful, pragmatic. fiercely loyal and protective, he watches the people he loves like they might disappear.

scar: used to be great friends for years. mutual crushes, idiots in love, etcetc. threat of imminent death forced them to act on their feelings. they’re lovesick fools. unhealthy dependency. separation anxiety. mated pair.

kane: met at the vex commune. they clashed the most at first, with kane being thoughtlessly insensitive. but now, they have one of the closest bonds. grian trusts kane fully with himself and his safety. loves to tease him, too. there might be something going on between them. (we stan polyamory here.)

nico: met at the vex commune. they have a quieter relationship, but there’s sizzling mischief underneath their skin that connects them. a certain snarkiness where they both enjoy teasing the others. a soft sense of solidarity. grian appreciates the ways nico cares about scar. 

closeness and comfort: grian’s generally not very physically close with people he doesn’t know/trust a lot. especially now, in this world, he flinches a lot and doesn’t let himself be touched, besides the above listed people. he’s clingy and can be cuddly and affectionate with scar, and eventually easily gravitates towards kane too (loves to startle him by randomly perching on him). his wings are largely off-limits, not only an intimate spot for avians, but now also linked to awful hunting trauma.
