Week 1 | Artists research
Influential artists:
Sophie Calle
from Take Care of Yourself
Sophie Calle is a French conceptual artist whose work focuses on personal experience, emotion and narrative.

Take Care of Yourself, exhibition site
Turning intimate stories (hers and others') into public art
Art as a provocation / The multiplicity of identities
It made me rethink the boundaries between art and life, how Art can be used as a tool to evoke empathy, resonate. (Personal experiences and stories can be interpreted in new ways through the perspective from the audience)
Kou Yamamoto

instagram
Based in Kyoto, Japan, his work spans digital art, artificial intelligence, dance, sound design, nature, and philosophy.
Specializes in integrating technology into everyday experiences, redefining the relationship between people and the environment through devices, interactive media and biomaterials.
I am a person who is very interested in science and technology, but also very afraid of it. These works give me a sense of the beauty of fictional world and technology.
Moreover, his works let me know the interactive software touchdesigner (hope that I can fully learn to use it this year:))
Tishan Hsu
American contemporary artist based in New York, his work combines painting, sculpture and digital media to explore how technology is changing our perception of the body and reality.
A reflection of his exploration into the intersections of technology, humanity, and the built environment.
Ever since seeing his work, it's taken me out of the sense of being trapped by screens, images... which made me more interested in combining moving images with other media.
The collision of technology, the virtual and the real.

A kind of Absense, 2024
This project explores the boundaries between presence and absence, clarity and blurriness in perception, focusing on how the availability or absence of sensory information shapes awareness. The initial inspiration arose from field recordings, which revealed how sound can guide attention and serve as a vessel for memory. Reflecting on the experiences of visually impaired individuals, who rely on heightened sensitivity to sound and touch, the work addresses the barriers they encounter due to a lack of accessible resources, such as braille and tactile pathways.
Cyanotype was chosen for its reliance on sunlight, much like vision depends on light. Nine cyanotype prints, each intentionally blurred, carry braille inscriptions that clearly convey the images’ content. This reversal creates a unique experience: visually impaired viewers, with the help of braille, may gain clearer information than sighted viewers relying solely on visual cues.
Sound, designed by layering field recordings taken at each photo’s location, adds an immersive dimension, simulating the way visually impaired people perceive their surroundings—a blend of unfiltered sounds.
Overall, the work invites viewers to reflect on their internal perception, consider the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals, and think about how the absence of information in everyday life creates unseen barriers.

A poetic way I observing the world⋯
A vast, luminous moon hangs bright in the night sky.

The bare branches reflected on the lake mirror the sky above.

Shards of glass scattered on the ground glimmer with dazzling light.

A speeding car weaves through the sea of people.

Behind the church, a solitary bench faces the vast ocean.

A seagull flies through the tumultuous waves.

Shadows of trees on the wooden fence dance, drawn by the sun’s pull.

A stranger on the train, turning away.

A river glides past the trees.

Iykyk
It’s difficult to make marks directly on the table as it’s too hard, and using cardboard is too soft, making it easy to press too hard. So, I’ve encountered quite a few challenges in finding the right material…
I can only use something that is relatively hard but not completely hard as the bottom of the pad.
And it also requires a lot of force!

Writing Braille template
To prevent mistakes in the last, I decided to draw a template first and then paste it to engrave it.
Measurement📏

It‘s very time-consuming because I have to measure it to make it accurate a little more…
this is only half a sentence👆

Cyanotype process
In reflecting on my work, I found a connection between using cyanotype and my theme: people perceive and see things through light, and unlike regular printing and darkroom enlarging, cyanotype also relies on light in this way.
