All the alarms start blaring.

Tosh says it's coming from beneath the basement, the sub level tunnels that they haven't used since the Blitz. Jack shouts for all hands, thinking anything smart enough to get in that way might be a problem. Gwen and Owen grab their guns and line up with Tosh. Jack leads them down, sparing a moment to wonder where Ianto is and hoping he was smart enough to get somewhere safe while they handled this.

He’ll look back on this moment with a grim sort of irony later.

They find a terrifying contraption and an even more horrifying being inside of it – a partially converted cyberman. Or cyberwoman, as the case may be.

She has Ianto.

Except after the first spike of fear and adrenaline, he realizes that’s not right, exactly.

Ianto is kneeling by the machine, fiddling with the needles and wires in her legs. She’s free from the waist up, sitting upright, with the warm brown of her skin and the silver metal melding seamlessly together. She looks human from the neck up, a discarded cyberman helmet to the side.

For a moment they’re all completely still, looking at each other in silence and surprise.

Then she says, “I told you that was the wrong wire.”

She sounds human. No metallic twang to her voice, no robotic facsimile of emotions.

Ianto shoots her an irritated look. “Excuse me for being concerned about electrocuting you.”

“I could take it,” she says, offhand.

“Ianto,” Jack says with all the calm he’s able to muster. “Get away from her.”

“So you can shoot her?” he asks. This is not the nervous, eager man he’s used to dealing with. Has he been infected too? No, it’s not inhuman. Just different. “I’d rather not.”

“I could take it,” she repeats.

Ianto reaches up to pinch her in the side. She doesn’t react, likely barely able to feel it, but she does pout. Which is oddly disconcerting. “Just sit still and let me finish getting you out of this thing. I didn’t spend the last year rewriting the cyberman protocols just to watch you get shot.”

“Okay,” Owen says, “what the fuck is going on here?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” Ianto asks.

She slaps him on the shoulder. Jack flinches. She’s strong enough, even partially converted, to break bones with that hit, but Ianto just rolls his eyes.

“Apologies,” she says. “I’m Ianto’s fiance. Lisa Hallet.”
