Dark Woods Circus summary

Recently I was able to fulfill my long-time dream, namely to get my hands on novel Dark Woods Circus, written by author of the song of same name Machigerita-P. I have been familiar with this story since year this song was released and it has always fascinated me.

In all these years, I haven't found a translation of this novel anywhere. Confess, maybe I didn't search well. But it seems to me that despite the fact that many years have passed, there may still be people who are as interested in this story as I am. Therefore, I plan to make small summaries for each of the chapters. In this part, we will get acquainted with Prologue and first chapter of the story.

WARNING: if you are not familiar with the concept of this story, it is dark, disturbing and sad. The text will mention blood and possibly other things unacceptable for you, so keep in mind!

First of all: novel's lore differs from original songs. I don't know yet exactly how much. In some ways it's disappointing, but perhaps the new story will be as catchy as the old one! (Plus, as far as I know, the animated video that many of us are familiar with is not canon and the original song was not accompanied by any animation, which is also worth considering.)

I also can't say that I'm good at English or Japanese, so my rendering of the text may seem strange or funny in places.

Prologue.

It's quite short. We're given to understand that the world where Circus exists is not our world, but it's closely connected and can merge. Author instills horror and so on.

Chapter I — Strange Looking Diva

The girl we all know from Dark Woods Circus was named Anna. She doesn't have horse legs (again, there's nothing in the song to indicate that they were in the original lore either), but she was born with growths on her head that resembled rose stems. Because of this feature, Anna grew up a recluse, knowing about the world from fairy tales and dreaming about friends, a husband, and children.

Anna had a loving mom and dad who surrounded her with love and care, but Anna still felt lonely. She never complained because she felt she had no right to when she had such wonderful parents.

Anna herself was a meek, sweet, and emotional girl. Anna's only hobbies were singing and reading books. She also spent her childhood watching her peers through the window and couldn't help but feel jealous.

And then one day she fell in love with a hunter named Andrew, who lived not far from her. Anna watched Andrew leave for work every morning and she watched him return home every evening. He seemed like a nice person and all the people he talked to seemed happy to see him. This made Anna involuntarily fantasize about her possible happy life with her beloved, which was not destined to become reality.

But one morning, Andrew did not go hunting in the forest as usual. Instead, he suddenly headed towards Anna's house. This greatly worried the girl and she hid under the blanket on the bed. From where she was, she could hear the conversation between her mother and the hunter. Andrew suddenly expressed a desire to talk to Anna, to the latter's fear and excitement. Anna's mother initially took Andrew's request with hostility, but the hunter seemed very polite and a good man, so she gave in. Andrew promised to return the next day and left.

Anna was incredibly excited by this event. She fussed all day, so that in the evening her father immediately noticed that something was wrong.

Having learned about the hunter, Anna's father became melancholic. Anna did not understand the reason, but her mother did. She began to laugh and joke about her husband. However, she understood his feelings.

Anna could not sleep for half the night. She got up early in the morning and walked back and forth until her mother came to ask what was wrong.

The hunter turned out to be very nice to Anna. She burst into tears of happiness, which scared him. But when the hunter began to console her, this made Anna even happier, and she burst into tears even more :D

Days passed. Their friendship grew stronger. Anna and Andrew had a good time together. They walked, sang together. Anna was happy.

But one night, Andrew suddenly suggested that Anna escape from the house through the window and go for a walk. It was like a scene from one of Anna's favorite fairy tales. She jumped and he caught her.

Taking the girl into the forest, the hunter confessed his feelings to her. Anna really interested him… like a rare unusual animal. It was hard to resist the desire to get her for his collection.

Having ridiculed Anna's naivety and her blind faith in fairy tales about love, Andrew killed the girl.

After her death, Anna found herself in an unknown space and met a very tall, strange man. The man took pity on her and also gave her the opportunity to see what happened to Anna's body after her death. Andrew stuffed her and put her in a display case in his room at home, as the most valuable exhibit of his collection.

The man offered Anna a deal. He could bring Anna back to life and even make Andrew fall in love with her, in exchange for her working for him as a diva. The naive fool agreed.

So Anna ended up in another dimension, in Dark Woods Circus.
