Atelocynus microtis
This odd-looking canine is called a short-eared dog. They are so elusive, though, that they are often called “ghost dogs.” Sightings of them are very rare, which makes research on them difficult.
Tumblr media
There’s been a lot of confusion over what the short-eared dog is. It used to be in the lycalopex genus with the zorros and the cerdocyon genus with the crab-eating fox, who it resembles, but now it’s in its own genus- atelocynus.
Tumblr media
Short-eared dogs live in the Amazon rainforest in Peru, Columbia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Brazil. They try to live far away from people, making them highly susceptible to habitat loss. Because of this it is suspected that their population is decreasing, but because sightings of them have always been rare it’s hard to estimate how many are left.
Studies of short-eared dog scat suggests that they eat lots of fruit, rodents, and fish. The fish in their diets along with their partially webbed feet could mean that short-eared dogs spend a lot of time in water, similar to the bush dog.
Tumblr media
Much of what is known about these elusive animals comes from one short-eared dog named Oso, who was found when he was a puppy by a logger. He was then raised with pet dogs until a wildlife veterinarian named Renata Leite Pitman took over his care. By observing how Oso found food and interacted with other animals, Pitman learned about parts of the short-eared dogs’ life that scientists previously knew almost nothing about.
Tumblr media
Before Pitman’s work with Oso, virtually nothing was known about short-eared dog vocalization, or the sounds they make. The veterinarian observed that Oso was very quiet but whined or “roared” when he was uncomfortable, and he occasionally made an unusual call that was “similar to some species of owl calls.”
When Oso was around 4 years old he was released into the wild with a tracker, allowing researchers to continue to learn about short-eared dogs.
I rate these very mysterious ghost dogs 13/10. They have a very distinctive look.

Proposals for the next Life season:
Good Life - everyone gets fully enchanted netherite armor/weapons at the beginning. Combat and traps have to get a lot more brutal to compensate
Bird Life - third life rules but the map is all floating islands and everyone starts with a curse of binding elytra
Pirate’s Life (for me) - the map is one of those survival islands so its 90% ocean. Boat boys sweep.
High Life - same as bird life but Bdubs’ Joint and the head shop are also on the map. this improves nothing.
Low Life - entire season is underground, also there’s some kind of boogeyman/forced betrayal mechanic again
Real Life - this one’s just larping

Game where you are a sneaky assassin
But you are a mass murder death robot and the job requires not killing innocents.
Your basic abilities are like, energy blade sweep that destroys a 10 meter arc in front of you, cluster nuclear bombs, mini sun energy cannon, etc.
Target sits in a crowded shopping mall food court
That kinda thing

i have to believe somewhere, someone is trying a taco for the first time. someone is taking their first shower. someone is coming home to a new puppy.
i have to believe that this winter, someone new to snow will pull out a 5 dollar plastic sled and throw themselves down a hill, just to try it.
i think i'm probably lucky to be familiar with sunrises. i live in an area where the lightning bugs dance in their cocktail hours. i take chickadees for granted.
today i saw a tree that had changed to fall colors, and my first reaction was to grimace. i love autumn, but i hate the cold. i don't want it to be winter yet.
but how lucky, to live in a place where the leaves do change color - so bright and vibrant that people make treks from around the world just to look at what i grew-up-with. my mom's friend was a teacher in florida. she used to ask us to mail her an assortment of leaves, just to show her children - to prove to them yes, they really do turn yellow and orange and red.
last year i finally tried pumpkin spice for the first time. someone this year will find a new favorite knitting pattern. someone's favorite band will drop a new album. artists will make things we haven't yet imagined. there will be chalk drawings and magnet poetry and karaoke and recipes and laughing.
it is easy to forget. this was all new to me, once. and when it was - well, it was just all so easy to love.

Stray is giving me a better understanding of cat behavior for sure.
I already found the clue I needed but I’m going to proceed to knock the rest of the pictures off this wall anyway, you understand.
Knocking bottles off shelves is very satisfying but also? on general principle? they were in my way, and now they’re not.
I will use the scratch option anywhere i can just to see what happens.
Is tripping people walking by an achievement? I’m gonna do it anyway.
Sorry Momo I’ll be there in just a sec but I found a jingle ball and I have to play with it right now immediately. It’s very important.
WHY will nobody PET me???? :(
I’m a hyper-intelligent evolved cat who can understand speech and make complex plans, but I’m going to fail to evolve any new behaviors and continue to meow and act exactly like a housecat anyway. Why improve on perfection!

i think a huge problem about the way that we frame how apps like tiktok and their respective communities have impacted the internet culture is that we are limiting it to a “teens problem” and are forgetting that a large chunk of tiktok creators and consumers are themselves adults. The nurses filming patients, many of the people running scams, many of the people pathologising everyday behaviours or advocating for botox in your 20’s or whatever the hell is going on in that app are NOT teens. They are adults.
To frame tiktok as a teens only problem both does Gen-Alpha a disservice but also masks the issue of fully grown adults dissolving their critical thinking skills online by thinking they are above having their psyches smooshed around in the pear wiggler just because their frontal lobes’ toasters are done dinging.
edit: some people are disagreeing with my use of the word gen-alpha which is valid, but the common start of gen Z is around 1997 and they are straight up adults having kids right now soooo
