Hey, AO3 folks (and fanfic writers elsewhere)... if you see this offer, RUN AWAY FROM IT. ITâS POISON.
Please read this twitter thread and then stay FAR AWAY from the people being describedâŚ
https://twitter.com/aj_spinner_/status/1557083021949505549
The tl:dr; version: These people want you to âfile the serial numbers offâ your fanfic and publish it with them.
The catch: If the IP owners ever come after you, youâre on your own⌠and you have to pay the publisher damages! (Not to mention the IP ownerâŚ)
Also: their advances are CRAP. Also: Your advance (such as it is) is obtained by crowdfunding. WTF!!!
So:
AVOID AVOID AVOID. Dear sweet THOTH on his e-scooter, stay away from these people.
ETA: Victoria Strauss of Writer Beware has looked at the contract and declared it âcompletely incoherent and inadequateâ. Â
So, honestly⌠AVOID.

not to be a cunt but the way people seem to write books now by cherry picking favorite tropes and character cliches and mashing them together with a basic overplayed plot.. and then it's marketed online and even in physical book stores literally just by describing the book by its trope usage and people eat it up like slay fake dating or gay enemies to lovers đ like okay but what is the book ABOUT is the writing good what's the plot what's the message? they're all soulless and like bioengineered to be immediate bestsellers with zero depth

đ What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher
âThe dead donât walk.â
A dark retelling of Edgar Allan Poeâs âThe Fall of the House of Usherâ, but this one goes deeper into the âunsaidâ portions of the story and gives us a horrific and eerie tale.
For anyone that doesnât know the plot of âThe Fall of the House of Usherâ, itâs a gothic story about a man who visits a dying friend in a decrepit manor house and things are not what they seem.
I did not expect to LOVE this book as much as I did. Initially, I bought it because of the cover art and the premise. I had read the Poe story a few months earlier and thought, âhow is someone going to add more to the story?â T. Kingfisher writes so well. They made this book gripping and creepy and amazing.
Every character is so unique and important to the story, leading up to the big climax at the end. All the allusions to 19th-century things was really cool if you catch them. Like Eugenia Potter, the English mycologist, who mentions her niece Beatrix. If it doesnât ring any bells, they subtly referenced Beatrix Potter, the famed author and NATURALIST/MYCOLOGIST. By the way, Eugenia was by far my favorite character. She was so distinguished and noble. Love her.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone thatâs into creepy horror-ish things. This book wasnât really horror, it felt more like terror. Anyway, definitely check it out!

Hey do you have any writing podcasts you would recommend? Iâm in need of inspiration. Writing advice or just writers talking about their craft or anything else writing related would be awesome
I'm terrible when it comes to podcasts (I only listen to podcasts about terrible things and terrible people), but here's a bunch that have been highly recommended (and I mean to listen to one day, I swear):
The Creative Writer's Toolbelt - A podcast focusing on discussing different creative writing techniques. Frequently covers interviews with authors discussing the techniques that work for them.
First Draft with Mitzi Rapkin - An interview-based podcast focusing on the craft of writing.
DIY MFA - Focusing on not only writing, but building up a writing community around yourself.
The Self-Publishing Show - Focusing on interviews and aspects of indie publishing. Good to check out if this is the route you want to go down.
88 Cups of Tea - An interview-based podcast with authors, literary agents, and many others involved in the business of writing.
Please feel free to reblog and add your favorites!
