unpopular opinion, but i was NEVER a fan of hayffie, even before srotr. they just dont really make sense to me, and i see them more as trama-bonded platonic soulmates !!! that being said. HOWEVER. i can not STAND when people hate on other people for (still) shipping hayffie. just let people ship what they want, its doing you zero harm i promise !!!!

charles going all moon-eyed over edwin on a regular basis after they get back to london, completely unaware of it. he'll get distracted thinking abt their conversation on the stairs, about what it might've been like if he'd answered differently, and he thinks he's keeping a chill exterior but really he's looking at edwin all awed and reverent. crystal bemoans that she cant snap a picture of it to torment him with later, but manages to draw a sketch of it she thinks will suffice. edwin, for his part, is very much not oblivious to this and in fact just trying to ignore it. he almost questioned charles about it a week or so into the long stretches of 🥺 but never managed to work up the nerve, and by time he catches crystal snickering to herself about it, he's more inclined to poke her brain about it. they confer while charles is out, which is how crystal accidentally lets edwin know she knows, but only because she'd kind of assumed based on charles' whole vibe. edwin wishes ghosts didnt blush, but asks what she, as a detective, deduces charles feelings to be. she goes all serious and tells him exactly what she knows to be true: charles loves you more than he does the rest of the world combined. he couldn't see the forest for the trees, but you gave him a map. he's finding his way there, just give him time. and maybe some hints.
