crack theory:
john doe's appearance shown in aup is not his true appearance. he just happened to learn about his idol's real appearance via the power of extreme simping and decided to cosplay as him when posing as prof. ludger cherish for his blackdawn mission, which is why heathcliff and john doe looked and acted alike enough to cause the case of mistaken identity and allow him to fool literally everyone who once knew of john doe.

the fall of ludgercasey by the reichenbach is so unhinged no matter how you read it:
james moriarty knew that casey selmore was at her limit and yet still goaded her into finishing him off, effectively inviting her to die together with him, and she, much to his surprise, actually accepted his proposal. and he's happy that she did.
james moriarty goaded casey selmore into finishing him off because he trusted that she could overcome her limit and do her job without unnecessarily endangering herself, but surprisingly casey completely threw away that option and chose to die together with him anyway. and he's also happy that she did.

if you think about it, the lumensis order is famous for not giving any benefits nor treating kindly towards concubines and children born out of wedlock, so its unlikely that anyone in their right mind would volunteer themselves to become and/or bear one. this actually suggests a much darker implication that they might have been victims of sexual violence (and possibly kidnapping. and even worse, grooming. after all, they did have a history of taking little girls away from their own family) — which makes the lousy tradition of branding their bastard children even more insane. its like screaming at the whole world to let people know that some of their most well-respected members are not only a cheater but also a sexual predator, and the holy church of lumensis is proudly letting them get away with it acting all high and mighty while punishing their innocent victims with death sentences.

So we know that in the novel that ludger cherish is compared to a raven, he has that whole dark aesthetic going on, and not to mention one of his identities uses a plague doctor mask which is very “raven” looking (idk if that one’s a stretch or not). But he also is highly intelligent, and mimicry- something that ravens are known for- is something he does with ease. (also fun fact that I didn’t know until comparing the two, ravens uses ‘non-verbal’ or ‘hand gestures’ to communicate, and in the manwa you can clearly see that ludger cherish often uses his hands when speaking. And I thought that was funny.)
so what if he also liked collecting shiny things like ravens as well? We already know he can easily be swayed by money yeah? So my personal head cannon, Heathcliff/ludger cherish, loves to collect shiny things. That shiny Little Rock (his), that shiny thing that came out of Quasimodo (snatched), that cute little hair pin (finders keepers). But not just shiny things, things like books as well. That small notebook sized dictionary (might as well), that thick book that’s really far too inconvenient to lug around? (Who’s gonna stop him? Casey? She’s currently helping him.)

Imagine someone's else vivid memories flooding in as if you lived them.

Even joyful or pleasant memories would be confusing if they weren't one's own.

But what if those memories were horrifying, painful, and regretful?

What if they felt as vivid as one's own experiences?

There is a term called "Fremdschämen."
It refers to the human experience of feeling pain as if it were one's own when witnessing others' suffering.

But what if those memories actually flowed into you?

The human mind is fragile. Even Dreamwalkers, who undergo rigorous mental training, go mad with just half of someone else's memories.

Do these books tempt you? They did me, too.
But now, not anymore.

(Fair warning in advance, all knowledge I have about AUP is taken strictly from Tumblr and the manhwa) Ludger/Heathcliff makes all his decisions based on the information that he was going to die. I imagine that when someone goes through life working towards one goal, one thing, and knowing that that thing is going to be what eradicates their existence it makes them make some pretty odd choices. This man doesn’t apologize for anything, runs away, kills people because at the end of the day it doesn’t matter because he’s just going to die anyway. And when he dies it’ll be retribution for everything he has done. Now I’m no psychologist or anything, but if I was doing some pretty shitty things and my mind was immediately like “well when I complete my goal and die, thus paying for all my sins, the world will be a better place.” I’m pretty sure some people would have questions.
I don’t think Heathcliff feels the need to apologize, because he fully believed that his actions of dying will be enough of an apology. now is this an excuse for his behavior? HA absolutely not. However it does explain his mentality a bit more I think. the man’s suicidal and he’s lived two lives, the problem for him isn’t dying it’s staying dead, and when he finally stays dead he believes the people around him will feel the same peace he will.
And I think Casey pushing him off the cliff, with the intention of killing herself in an attempt just to take him out, kinda of further cemented this idea for Heathcliff. She was willing to risk everything just to kill him (never mind it was his own fault) so isn’t this what they wanted? Isn’t this what needed to happen for people to be at peace?

ppl questioning why casey selmore would spend three years chasing after james moriarty/ludger cherish instead of just moving on are forgetting a very important fact: she is not a cop, but a private detective whose entire purpose is to seek the truth.
expecting a detective to drop their unsolved cases is no different than asking them to quit their own job.
"but wasn't the delica case already solved?"
no, casey knew in her heart that james moriarty ain't the real culprit or a bad person. that's why she needed confirmation. that's why she wanted to correct her mistakes.
she isn't obsessed with james moriarty. she is obsessed with the truth. she is obsessed with righting wrongs, including her own.
that's her definition of justice.
