HISTORY

+ As a child “Michelle” was brought up with the idea that was she special.  More than just a mere human.  Merfolk were ‘the pinnacle of creation’ as her mother would say.  She was an oddly religious woman who believed many Christian teachings even though she and her daughter’s existence contradicted the religion itself.  She also considered herself a professional con-woman.  Yet another contradiction to her supposed faith.

+ Though her mother had an exalted view of their kind, Michelle was raised on land.  Of course she had lessons in the water but Mama King always always pushed the importance of fitting in with mortals as they were easily to manipulate. “Especially with that face of yours” she would always add with a loving look.

+  As she went through school though, Michelle found that she had more and more contempt for “that face of hers” and her mother’s insistence on her liking and wearing all things “girly”.  What was girly?  For Michelle girly was lipstick just as much as bloodied and bruised knees from climbing trees.  She grew to resent the rigid boundaries of boy vs. girl and in the sixth grade chopped off all of her hair and began to exclusively wear “boys clothes” to demonstrate her defiance. For the first time she also insisted on being called “Micah” rather than Michelle.

+ This change felt right to Micah but apparently not to her fellow immature middle-schoolers, or mother for that matter.  For the next few years Micah would endure some very extreme bullying to the point where she became incredibly uncomfortable in her own skin and began to beg her mother not to be sent to school if only to avoid being called names for a day.  There was an anxiety that manifested itself through panic attacks before, after, and during school in Micah.  As much as it hurt her mother not having what was an ideal daughter, in her eyes, it was worse watching her go through such pain.  Mama King decided the best course of action was to move somewhere more accepting.  This decision to move may or may not have also had something to due with her mother trying to escape a con gone wrong.

+ Following the move to Asheville, Micah slowly began to learn to love herself.  She was also attending a much more rigorous school than she had previously and found that she absolutely loved the competition in the classroom.  She also realized that if she put in the hard work, she could actually do very well in school.  She had many sleepless nights spent studying and perfecting papers while also participating in a mentorship program where she could tutor younger kids and become their sort of ‘big sister’.

+ The work that she put into her high school years allowed her to attend the very prestigious Brown University where she double majored in Gender and Sexuality Studies as well as Comparative Literature. Her time in college was comparable to most what with the cramming and partying and experimentation but her senior year, her mother had grown ill.

+ Mama King had managed to hang on to see her daughter graduate with honors but just a month after crossing the stage and receiving her diploma, her mother passed away.  This completely rocked Micah’s world.  There is a certain sense of free falling that one feels when they loose a parent and Micah was no exception to this.  She moved back to Asheville in order to feel closer to her mother’s memory and began to write.  For a year she wrote completely feverishly.  Scraps of paper littered her home and every surface had scattered pens and pencils.  She was lost.  A part of her really wanted to attend graduate school to get her masters but she already had accumulated debt for her undergraduate degree and did not want to be financially crippled.

+ Fast forward 2 years and a half and Micah found herself in a relationship that was all passion and no substance and had ended nearly as quick as it had began.  The problem, her girlfriend was still living with her.  They were complete opposites and fought constantly but Micah did not have the heart to ask her to move out.  After all she had been paying some rent and she knew that her girlfriend had nowhere else to go.  There was also that small detail about her never having revealed that she was, you know, not exactly human.

+ So know the status of Micah King is semi-author / poet with a single published fiction novel and a very unglamorous job of bartending in order to pay the bills.

PERSONALITY

+ Despite her somewhat intimidating appearance, Micah is a huge softie. To say that Micah is an idealist at heart is a major understatement.  She has lots of love to give but is rather protective of herself and does not open up easily due to a fear of rejection or getting hurt by someone.

+ Micah is very excitable about things she has an interest in and also has a bit of a dramatic side.  When she knows that she has an audience, whether at work or just in her day to day life, she easily slips into a storyteller with no qualms about exaggerating or straight up lying.  Something she probably got from her mother.  Speaking of which, she is not so unlike her in that she also has a tendency to use people to get something that she needs or wants.  

ETC / HEADCANONS

+ Micah’s love of tattoos came about as a way for her to feel more comfortable in her skin.  She felt that she could reclaim her body by filling it with art and meaning full words.  It also irritated her mother which she would not deny was a plus.  Since her mother’s passing though she had gotten a few pieces dedicated to her.

+ When she is having a bought of writer’s block, Micah has been known to ‘go for a walk’ also known as code to get her fish on in the form of swimming in the lake near her home.  It has always helped to clear her head and is a place she feels close to her mother.
