Let's play Pokemon Red: Randomized Nuzlocke!
The main reason why I wanted to start a YouTube channel was that I had gotten into watching people play Pokemon. Specifically, people attempting Nuzlocke challenges of the various games in the Pokemon lineup. I actually tried my hand at a Nuzlocke series before, but sort of ran out of steam before I ever finished playing the game. It feels like a good time to try again!
The Nuzlocke challenge started as a web comic (originally called Pokemon: Hard Mode) drawn by an artist only known by the same name. It only has two main rules: you can only capture the first Pokemon you find in an area, and a Pokemon that faints is dead and can never be used again.
The challenge can be incredibly difficult, not to mention emotionally charged. Most importantly, it injects new life into a game most Pokemon fans know backwards and forwards. It opens a world of possibilities not usually considered in regular playthroughs of the game. You’re forced to rely on Pokemon you may not have ever used before. That might be one of my favorite aspects of the challenge, since all too often I end up falling back on my few favorite Pokemon and ignoring the hundreds of others available.
Here’s our Pokemon Red Randomized Nuzlocke playlist:

Daisy Ridley Could Be the Perfect Lara Croft
It’s the dream casting I never even knew I wanted until the rumors started circulating. After the announcement of a new, rebooted Tomb Raider film, Deadline reported that Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley was being considered for the part of Lara Croft. Ridley confirmed that report today, adding that she’s still waiting for the role to be offered to her. The film in question hasn’t even been written yet, but director Roar Uthaug has said that this adaptation could be inspired by Crystal Dynamics’s rebooted Tomb Raider series.
Out of all the Tomb Raider games and films, my only experience with Lara Croft is the 2013 reboot. I LOVED that game. I’ll eventually get around to playing its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, but I’ve tried to get into a few of the earlier games and I just don’t think they’re my cup of tea. I probably should have grown up with the Tomb Raider series, like Bryan did. Alas, I was a Nintendo girl.
But my relationship with the series is not what’s important here. What’s important is that one of the greatest video game characters of all time could be portrayed by an actress I very much adore. Daisy Ridley was wonderful to watch in Star Wars VII as Rey, a resourceful scavenger with remarkable mechanical aptitude and mysterious ties to the Force. Rey is skilled in combat, fluent in a number of languages, and even appears to be an expert sharpshooter. She’s also a determined survivor, going to great lengths to take care of herself and protect the few people she cares about.
That sounds an awful lot like Lara Croft, doesn’t it?
We know Ridley could easily become Lara. She has experience playing an eerily similar character, and definitely looks and sounds the part. But as I was scrolling through the Facebook news feed about this perfect casting choice, I noticed a lot of posts claiming Daisy Ridley is “not built” for the role, that she doesn’t have the body. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but this one is kind of ridiculous–and not just because Lara Croft is no longer endowed with a set of giant pointy boobs.
Daisy Ridley is STRONG. I mean deadlifting 176 pounds s-t-r-o-n-g. Every Friday, you can view videos of Ridley’s workout sessions on her Instagram, and they are intense. She first began strength training with a fitness instructor to gain some muscle for her role in Star Wars, but she’s been hitting the gym on a regular basis ever since. Ridley lifts weights, sprints, and a variety of other gym activities I can’t tell you about because I’m a couch potato. In one clip, she does a vertical 180 degree flip midway up a rock climbing wall. If that’s not Lara Croft, I don’t know what is.
I’m a big, big fan of Daisy Ridley. She comes across as such a genuine, down-to-earth person in spite of starring in one of the biggest film franchises in history. Her authenticity is something else she could bring to the Lara Croft, who has become way more relatable and real thanks to the Crystal Dynamics reboots. Realness is something so many “strong female characters” lack, and I think Ridley could provide one amazing solution to that problem. So yeah, I am all for the casting of Daisy Ridley as Lara Croft, and I eagerly await the official announcement of the decision.

Frictional's SOMA is a Fascinating Nightmare
One of my fondest Fonzie memories is barreling through Frictional Games’ Amnesia: The Dark Descent with Bryan and Helen in the earliest days of our trio. I had never played any horror games before then, although I’d already developed a love of the film genre. Watching a scary movie doesn’t fuel my natural anxiety like…

Fix the Gamma Slider Issue in SOMA (and other games)
A lot of games have a gamma slider in the display options. If you have f.lux, those gamma sliders probably don’t work the way they are supposed to. It’s actually a very easy fix! All you have to do is exit the f.lux application, which controls the brightness of your computer screen and disables the gamma slider in games.
If you don’t have f.lux but still can’t adjust the gamma in your game, there’s obviously another problem. I’m sure Google has the answer, though!
Here’s a short video about the gamma slider fix for SOMA and any other game with adjustable brightness.

This Magic: the Gathering card fell out of my secondhand copy of The Disaster Artist, Greg Sestero’s book about the making of The Room (the best worst movie ever made). Was it destiny?

This game looks SO COOL! I studied Hamlet a little bit in school, so it would be really neat to experience the play this way. Maybe we can record the gameplay for our channel when it comes out!

Why did we pick the name Little Fonzies?
Little Fonzies: Pulp Fiction and Friendship
In the summer of 2012, I watched Pulp Fiction for the first time with Bryan and Helen. Before you get upset that it took me that long to experience what’s probably one of your favorite Quentin Tarantino films, let me just clarify that I’m not really a movie watching person. Name a movie, chances are I haven’t seen it. I think it was Bryan’s first viewing of Pulp Fiction, as well, though Helen had already seen it a number of times. Her Macbook wallpaper was a sweet Jules Winnfield meets Wizard of Oz painting for a long time. So if you want to talk about Pulp Fiction, she’s your lady.
It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen the movie, so I won’t try to describe the plot or my reaction to it. I’m sure I enjoyed it. Quentin Tarantino does some really interesting things in his films. If you’ve never seen Pulp Fiction, or haven’t watched it in quite some time like me, here’s a clip from the movie that might help you get an idea of what it’s like.
If you can’t watch the clip, I’ll give you the gist of it. A couple known as Pumpkin and Honey Bunny are trying to rob a diner, and Samuel L. Jackson’s character Jules Winnfield is not having any of it. Winnfield gets Pumpkin at gunpoint, which sends HB into a panic. In order to calm her down, Winnfield suggests everyone act like “three little Fonzies,” since Fonzie (from the classic sitcom Happy Days, if you didn’t know) is supposed to be the epitome of cool.
Let me tell you, that isn’t exactly why we chose “Little Fonzies” as the name of our Youtube channel. In fact, when I suggested it as an option, I couldn’t even remember why Jules Winnfield had ever uttered those words in the first place. I mean, the combination of Helen, Bryan, and myself is plenty cool, but are we Arthur Fonzarelli cool? That’s not up to me.
The short answer as to we we chose that name is that…we just really like it. After watching Pulp Fiction together all those years ago, the three of us started referring to our triumvirate as “three little fonzies.” Any event involving the three of us alone is a Fonzie affair. Our Facebook group chat is called “Fonzies,” and none of us have ever dared change it (although many other group chats we belong to have gone through a number of absurd names). Since we three spend the most time together, and create the most content together, it seemed only fitting that our Youtube channel adopted the Little Fonzies moniker as well.
It’s not that we’re giant Pulp Fiction fans (as I’ve already expressed). We don’t really care about Happy Days, either. We just made one small memory together, and it has been our trademark ever since.
