You know what I would personally love to “opt out” of?
Tumblr media
⬆️⬆️⬆️ I’d love to opt out of having this guy as my governor.
Tennessee has one of the lowest vaccination rates and one of the highest rates of new cases of COVID-19. So the obvious action to take is to override mandates for masks and put as little effort into increasing vaccinations as possible. For Governor Bill Lee, enforcing our greatest tools in fighting the biggest public health crisis of a generation is less important than pandering to his Trump-loving, science-hating constituents with misguided platitudes about trusting parents to make the right decisions. It’s funny how Republicans believe in personal choice until it involves a woman’s reproductive rights. But I digress. If the matter of public health comes down to personal choice, I’d like the chance to opt out of wearing clothes in public. What do you bet Governor Lee and his whiny constituents would be singing a different tune if Professor Smith decided to show up to their lecture wearing nothing but their birthday suit? Or if that doesn’t do it for you, maybe the person cooking your meal at your favorite restaurant decided to wear nothing while handling what’s going into your body. It’s not your business what they decide to wear or not wear, right? Would you even remotely tolerate a person like that? Doubtful. You know why? Because that’s fucking disgusting! You’re fine with mandates as long as they’re not politically advantageous to you. As long as you can’t exploit right-wing hysteria over what rights the big scary government are gonna take from you next, you’re more than willing to take a rational approach to public health regulations.
End of rant, but just so you know, Lee is up for re-election next year. Let’s get him out before he harms someone else.

LOL What even are the Emmys?
The Emmy nominations have been out for a while now, and while I’m certainly about as far from being in the loop on TV as you can be, I’m an awards show slut, so I devoured the nomination list when it was announced. Anyway, I don’t know what most of these shows are, so I thought it’d be funny to take a blind guess at the basic premise of the nominated shows.
Comedy
Black-ish - This is a show I know and have seen three seasons of. Last I checked there were 20 spin-offs, the culture has turned on Kenya Barris, and Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross were separating. You tell me.
Cobra-Kai - Yet another reboot of IP that kids loved in the 80s and are probably going to force their kids to love as adults. Arbitrarily packaged as a series now that can be watched while looking at my phone.
Emily in Paris - Oh shit, did the Emmys get that trip to Paris, too? I think this is a musical?
The Flight Attendant - I know this only as a poster. Kaley Cuoco sure looks perturbed by some incident and conflict that’s sure to be stretched out over the course of a whole season.
Hacks - Watched the pilot. Love Jean Smart, but found the setup to be fairly stale and uninspired for something so beloved. I watched Designing Women afterwards and had a much better experience.
Kenan - I’m shocked by Kenan’s acting nomination. I found him genuinely terrible in the few episodes I’ve seen. Drain him of all his charisma in an attempt to give us a cliché single-dad-tries-to-hold-it-together show.
The Kominsky Method - A Chuck Lorre joint about an aging womanizer, I think, but apparently Kathleen Turner shows up. And is supposedly charming.
PEN15 - Something something tween dramedy. Zoned out whenever I saw a trailer. I was already exhausted.
Saturday Night Live - We all know SNL. I’ve watched a handful of unfunny clips with my brother from this season. No way this show ever gets cancelled, right? An abysmal low over the past few years.
Shameless - Always surprised this show is still on. Never saw one. I think it’s a show about a family of criminals. A holdover from the Weeds era of Showtime series.
Shrill - Not sure what season this is for, but I watched season one recently and was quite fond of it. Had similar feelings to Hacks in that the direction is a bit mundane at times and has a very familiar tone to a lot of streaming-platform dramedies out now. But it’s a sharply focused character piece and Bryant is so winning. I’m glad I have a nominee I can get behind.
Ted Lasso - Watched one of these. Liked Sudeikis. Remember very little else. Again, I’m kind of exhausted by all the content.
Drama
The Boys - Amazon original about caped crusaders who go evil and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Bridgerton - Period romance that’s vaguely reminiscent of Downton Abbey, I guess. Shonda Rhimes is involved.
The Crown - I detest this show. I watch it with my parents who love it like everyone else loves it, and I’m completely on an island. I didn’t even love Colman.
The Handmaid’s Tale - Showing how much of a philistine I am already by not getting the big deal about any of these shows, so I may as well admit I know very little about Margaret Atwood’s works. Meh.
In Treatment - OMG, I forgot they rebooted this show. Is it a new episode every night again? How do you people watch so much?
Lovecraft Country - Someone could put a gun to my head and force me to tell them what this is and they’d have to shoot me. Good for Jonathan Majors, I guess.
The Mandalorian - I don’t get it. I think Disney has lost the thread on their Star Wars content. At  least Sasha Banks is getting that SAG card..
Perry Mason - My boy Matthew Rhys is worth supporting. Still, another gangster show?
Pose - I guess I should get on this, but Ryan Murphy is a lot.
This is Us - Saw one and one was enough. Yikes.

Top 5 films of 2021 halfway point in rough order.
1. Singin’ in the Rain in the theater. First viewing ever.
2. President Biden eating chocolate chocolate chip
3. Judas and the Black Messiah
4. Me not realizing Luca was a thing that existed until the week it premiered on streaming. (Movies are content now lol)
5. Raiders of the Lost Ark. First time in a theater.
Hon. Mention: The Father. Wasn’t sure if it was 2020 or 2021 so I left it off of this joke list and showcased it here. But yeah. The Father’s great and Anthony Hopkins was a worthy winner. The rest of the 2021 movies I saw were shite. End of list,

Predictions for the 93rd Academy Awards
A few notes before we get to the predictions:
1. I haven’t seen all of the nominees and haven’t followed the awards race as close as I normally do, so I’m hardly an expert as far as this Oscar year is concerned.
2. With the exception of Trial of the Chicago 7, I’m pleased with every Best Picture nominee and think that each would make a great winner. I’m a Minari voter in this instance, but truly think there’s an embarrassment of riches in the lineup.
3. Actress and Supporting Actress are thrillingly competitive and strong this year, and I could see any scenario playing out as to who is going to win. For Best Leading Actress, Viola Davis’s momentum, screen magnetism, and general goodwill amongst colleagues make a compelling case for her narrative, even though I believe Andra Day has a lot going for her (and would get my vote). In terms of Supporting, I really toyed with the idea of a Maria Bakalova win, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger. This will be the easiest place to reward Minari and Youn’s performance is so enchanting. I love Bakalova’s performance and am thrilled with how organically her campaign has caught on, but I’m just feeling Youn has the advantage here. Another thing going against Bakalova: Comedy bias.
4. Some citations I’m personally rooting for: The Father in Production Design, Editing, and Screenplay; Soul for Score; Wolfwalkers for Animated Feature; Paul Raci for Supporting Actor.
Now, with that out of the way, on to the predictions!
Picture: Nomadland
Director: Chloe Zhao
Original Screenplay: Promising Young Woman
Adapted Screenplay: Nomadland
Actress: Viola Davis
Actor: Chadwick Boseman
Supporting Actress: Youn Yuh-jung
Supporting Actor: Daniel Kaluuya
Animated: Soul
International: Another Round
Documentary: Time
Cinematography: Nomadland
Costumes: Emma.
Editing: Trial of the Chicago 7
Production Design: Mank
Score: Soul
Song: “Speak Now”
Sound: Sound of Metal
Makeup: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Vis. Effects: The Midnight Sky (No Guts, No Glory)

This is not a drill! Billy and Mandy, Ed, Edd, ‘n Eddy, and Kids Next Door are all coming to HBO Max in January. You’ve almost redeemed yourself, HBO Max/WB. Almost. Just keep your 2021 theatrical slate exclusive to theaters and we might be able to talk.

I’ve been depressed and unable to get into the Halloween spirit this year, so here’s a Halloween survey I found. Maybe that’ll help.
Is your birthday in October?
No. It’s in September.
Do know someone who has a birthday in October?
Yes.
Do you like the weather that comes in October?
I do.
Do you still go trick or treating?
I’m too old.
What is your favorite costume you have ever worn?
When I dressed up as Kane from WWE/F.
What will you be this year?
About two steps away from a nervous breakdown.
On a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being most liked) how much do you like haunted houses?
I’ve never been.
What is your most memorable moment in a haunted house?
See the above answer.
Are you a person that flies out of the haunted house crying or laughing your head off?
Neither, because I’ve never been to a haunted house.
What's your favorite scary movie?
The Blair Witch Project
Do you watch scary movies alone...and in the dark?
Sometimes. I like to turn the lights out because I don’t enjoy glares on the screen.
Do you like candy corn?
No, but I haven’t tried it in a while.
Ever been pranked as a halloween joke? If so, what happened?
I vaguely remember someone jumping out and scaring me once. I yelped.
Have you ever pranked someone to give em' a good halloween scare? What prank did you pull?
I don’t like pranks.
In a scary movie, would you be the one who goes to check out the freaky noise upstairs, or the one who is smart and runs? (Not that there are many people in movies who are smart enough to walk away from the direction the noise is coming from...it's what makes a movie a movie, right?)
It would depend on what the creepy noise was. Likely scenario: I’d run, but still die.
Do you and a group of friends get together and have scary movie marathons, staying up all night being scared?
No.
Do you go to corn mazes?
No.
If so, do you stick with the non-scary maze, or do you go for the haunted one?
See above.
Going back in time, if you were given the chance to play in any scary movie, which one would you pick?
How about The Babadook? That way I could have a big gay brunch with The Babadook. I could also play with that cute puppy before it gets buried at the end.
Do you like the bloody, gory, slasher, run for your life because you're about to get your throat cut open, movie? Or are you for the suspensful, not much blood type?
I prefer the latter.
Do you find movies like chucky, the puppet master, dolls, etc, extremely dumb?
I haven’t seen any of those movies, so I can’t comment.
Is it creepy to you that sometimes they use kid's toys as the murderers?
Yes, it’s creepy.
Are you into carving pumpkins?
Yeah.
Do you roast the seeds and then eat them?
No.
Have you ever been to a costume dance/party?
Yes.
What is the stupidist scary movie ever made, in your opinion?
The Saw movies that I’ve seen are quite dumb.
What's the best scary movie ever made?
Well, I already told you my favorite scary movie was The Blair Witch Project, so I’ll stick with that one.
What's the last scary movie you went to see in theatres? Did you like it?
The Lighthouse. It was great. I laughed my ass off.
Did you like this survey?
Sure.
