I feel like the appeal of saints is there's a little guy who went through exactly your problems you can ask for help and sometimes they're on a necklace for more immediate access. I am not catholic and have no particular connection to those sainted little guys though, but I do sometimes wish to tell my troubles to a silent yet supportive figure that perhaps can help but mainly offers solace. This is why the "oh Ariana, we're really in it now" meme speaks to me in a secular, spiritual, and stupid way. I too desire a poster of a distant pop culture icon with which to haplessly commiserate.

actually i think it’s very funny and correct that the new york times wrote about dracula daily, a substack turned accidental tumblr book club, and tumblr’s reaction to the article is “fuck this pro-count propaganda, where is our friend jonathan?” because to be honest i think if a genuinely mainstream news organization ever managed to accurately convey what the fuck goes on here, that would be the sign of the end times, possibly of human civilization but almost certainly of this being the only social media platform worth using anymore. like, forget it, cops are here, party’s over, go home. in retrospect “new york times reports on tumblr’s favorite novel of 2022 (one of the most famous books in the world, which came out in 1897), tumblr gets mad at them for incorrectly identifying the book’s #1 blorbo” truly feels like the only way this was ever gonna go, and i for one am grateful, because i don’t come to this website for content that is able to be parsed by normal people. that’s not what i’m here to do and it’s certainly not what i’m here to see.

Also, interesting note on Lucy’s condition. Stoker is actually subverting what was a common trope in that time period. 

It was a common for characters in novels to fall ill, often from tuberculosis, which had similar symptoms as what Lucy is experiencing- paleness, loss of energy, difficulty breathing. A victorian reader would quickly recognise these symptoms, and the trope they are suggesting. 

But in this case, nope, it’s not that rascally consumption this time, Lucy’s got a case of the vampires, lads.
