The most terrifying part of having memory issues is when you can feel something from 5 seconds ago be thrown out the window and there's an empty hole where it once was. You remember that you forgot something.

Oh yeah, everyone does sometimes. If that's all he's consuming though, that's probably not great. Not like I'm one to talk, but at least I have a good reason to avoid eating.

Doesn't really take much for paranoia to take hold, you probably didn't do anything at all. You can try to get through to him that you're not trying to kill him or something, but if that doesn't work the best you can really do is just... wait it out. Hang out with him, make sure he doesn't try anything stupid.

Smiley on top of all of that does seem a little strange. Could just be the lack of sleep getting to him, I know my brother gets all giggly over nothing when he hasn't slept.

At the very least, they could probably help him get some sleep. His head might be a little clearer after he actually gets some rest.

Careful he doesn't accuse you of taking something out of his coffee, too. Caffeine on an empty stomach is generally considered unhealthy by normal standards, anyway. I do it all the time, but I'm an insane freak and nothing I do should be considered a good idea.
