Story Prompt #1: Write a short story starting with the line, "The flowers died on Monday."
The flowers died on Monday.
I sat and stared at them, my mind blank and my eyes unseeing.
The family sat silently together on Sunday.
No one had anything to say.
The condolence messages stopped on Saturday.
Friends and acquaintances had moved on.
We cremated him on Friday.
I got sick looking at his body, unable to cope with the fact that he was dead. It was unnerving... praying that he would sit up and tell us all it was a sick joke while staring at his lifeless body, terrified that he would move.
The family gathered on Thursday.
There was drinks for everyone and, surprisingly, laughter. We told stories and poured out a shot for him.
People posted that they were okay, someone else had died on Wednesday.
I read the sweet messages from friends of his until I found a post from a man who had tried to help him reassuring everyone that he was alive while sharing details I didn't yet want to world to know. Good for him.
I got the call on Tuesday.
"Sweetie, your daddy died."
