I think I might be transgender.
How do I know if I am transgender?
You may be experiencing feelings of disconnect or discomfort with specific gender related parts of your body, or feel as though your body doesn’t match how you feel and see yourself. An example is you may have breast and wish you didn’t have them, or as feel as though you weren’t supposed to have them. You may also feel like you identify more with the gender opposite from your assigned gender at birth or feel like you do not identify as either gender. If you are experiencing these thoughts and feelings, you may be Transgender. You may feel more like yourself when people refer to you as the gender you see yourself as and identify most with.
Is being transgender normal?
Yes. Being Transgender is normal. There are historical representations of Transgender individuals in several different cultures and communities throughout the world.
Who should I tell?
If you feel comfortable or safe, confiding in family or friends may help you find additional support around your identity, and alleviate any stress or pressure you may be feeling when keeping it to yourself.
Find a local support group for Transgender individuals, to find peers and others who may be experiencing similar feelings as yours. Typically these support groups are held at local LGBTQ community centers, and may even be held online as a virtual community.
You do not have to tell anyone if you do not want to or do not feel safe to. Coming out about your Transgender identity is based on your safety and comfort.
What is transitioning and should I do it?
Transitioning is the process of changing your physical appearance to match how you identify your gender. This could mean that you change your clothing, wear or choose not to wear make up, take hormone replacement therapy and for some having surgery.
Not all Transgender people feel the need to transition, but for those who do, it is important to consult with a mental health provider who specializes in Gender Identity. If you are under the age of 18, you will need parental permission to begin the transition process.
