As horror becomes habitual, the brain begins to compensate—not by feeling less, but by reframing what is felt as normal, deserved, or entertaining. This is where desensitization metastasizes into something more malignant: moral disengagement. What begins as emotional detachment becomes ethical distortion.

This cultivates what theorists like Lauren Berlant and Mark Fisher identify as “cruel optimism”—the pursuit of emotional intensity as a form of meaning, even when it corrodes the self. In this framework, creepypasta becomes a coping mechanism that masquerades as agency. Viewers assert dominance over horror not by resisting it, but by internalizing it. What’s at stake here is not narrative experimentation. It’s the ritualization of death—especially child death—as emotionally meaningless, culturally humorous, and psychologically routine.
🧊 The Cold Gaze: Desensitization as Defense Mechanism To be fair, not all detachment is malign. For many, especially adolescents or trauma survivors, engaging with horror is a way of gaining symbolic mastery over what feels otherwise unmanageable. This echoes Julia Kristeva’s theory of the abject: the horror of what disrupts identity, order, and the body. To fictionalize it is to contain it. But containment becomes dangerous when it calcifies into permanent disassociation. When readers can no longer feel disgust at the abject—or worse, when they eroticize it—they risk losing not only sensitivity, but the very capacity to register injustice as injustice. Fear, once the emotional centerpiece of the genre, becomes diluted through repetition, severed from its physiological purpose, and reshaped into something inert. This process—desensitization—is not simply a numbing of reaction, but a profound reconfiguration of how the viewer engages with violence, suffering, and ultimately, with empathy itself.
Creepypasta, as a genre, operates on the assumption that shock is infinite. But the human nervous system—like narrative tension—has thresholds. There comes a point when the bleeding child, the screaming victim, the "and then he slit her throat" no longer elicits a flinch but a scroll. In the relentless churn of stories—each more grotesque, each more extreme—the grotesque becomes not horrifying, but banal.

But where earlier media often used madness as a metaphor (think: the Gothic heroine in the attic, the Freudian split self), creepypasta collapses metaphor entirely. There is no subtext—only spectacle.From an academic lens, this is where Michel Foucault’s Madness and Civilization becomes hauntingly relevant. It does not simply describe violence—it dwells on it, eroticizes it, aestheticizes it, and in doing so, trains its audience to consume brutality as spectacle.
This phenomenon—the glamorization of psychosis, the idolization of killers, the flattening of mental illness into narrative shorthand—warrants more than moralistic hand-wringing. It demands critique through the overlapping lenses of literary theory, media ethics, and cultural pathology.
The Aestheticization of MurderCreepypasta’s relationship to murder is not that of cautionary tale but of ritual obsession. In canonical stories like Jeff the Killer, Eyeless Jack, or Laughing Jack, acts of mutilation are lavished with detail: slit throats, gouged eyes, flayed skin—each rendered with a tactile voyeurism that borders on the indulgent. Violence, here, is less consequence and more climax. Its narrative function is not to resolve tension but to fulfill a perverse contract between creator and reader: you came for the gore, and you shall receive it.

An Illinois sheriff’s deputy has been charged with murder after fatally shooting a Black woman who called 911 to report a possible prowler.
Sangamon county deputy Sean Grayson, who’s white, shot 36-year-old Sonya Massey in the face in her home in Springfield, Illinois – about 200 miles south of Chicago – after deputies responded to her 6 July call.
Prosecutors alleged that after Grayson, 30, allowed Massey to move a pot of water heating on the stove and set it on a counter. Grayson then “aggressively yelled” at Massey over the pot and pulled his 9mm pistol. Massey then put her hands in the air, declared “I’m sorry” and ducked for cover before being shot in the face.
In its statement issued the day of the incident, the Sangamon county sheriff’s office initially said “deputies immediately administered first aid until EMS arrived” after Massey was shot, but prosecutors allege Grayson discouraged the other deputy from getting his medical kit to save her....
[...] Grayson, who has since been fired from the department, was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct. He pleaded not guilty in his first court appearance Thursday.
Sheriff Jack Campbell said Wednesday that Grayson was fired because it is evident that the deputy “did not act as trained or in accordance with our standards. With our badge we accept enormous responsibility, and if that responsibility is abused, there should be consequences.”

The baffling thing is that even more than usual in these things, there's absolutely no reason for him to have shot at her. They're laughing together and then suddenly he's shooting. (That there is a "usual" is horrifying and ridiculous and saddening and infuriating, all at once.)
I am ... curious, let's say, as to why Grayson has worked with "several other police agencies" in "seven years prior". That is not typical; people generally don't move around that much in that little time.

She will finally be allowed to rest and taken off of life support.
Her family’s fundraiser is nowhere near its goal, and now they have tremendous NICU costs to look forward to based on how her son was able (or unable) to develop under the duress of all those life saving drugs they pumped his mom full of.
Please allow this mother’s spirit to rest and support their family as they’re finally allowed to grieve poor Adriana being used as an incubator for the state.

I’ve got so many. If you’re wondering why so many are cis&bi it’s because I’m
Percy: cis, bisexual. People ask him why he ID’s as bi rather than pan, his best answer is “I like the bi pride colors more.” It takes him a while to realize that he’s bi because he’s always been open about appreciating men aesthetically. Like “yeah, of course Jason is handsome,” but he slowly starts to realize that, sure, he’d kiss a guy, maybe he’d hook up with a guy, maybe he’d date one. One day Annabeth is like, “Alright, I know everyone is on their own personal journeys, and I’m not going to force you to come out or ID any kind of way, but I need you to know that those are not heterosexual thoughts.”
Annabeth: cis, bi/pan. She prefers the label pansexual (just feels right for her), but she doesn’t mind people calling her bisexual. She will also often say she’s bi to people who may not understand what pansexuality is.
Also, I do love trans Percy and trans Annabeth headcanons, that’s just not my personal default for writing them.
Grover: cis & het but the absolute #1 ally. He is the only valid straight ally.
Nico: cis & gay or trans & gay. Both feel correct

Chris: So until v recently, I kind of just had him as cis het, but honestly? Bisexual Chris is a vibe. I also saw a headcanon of Chris as a he/him lesbian, and while that’s not my cup of noodles, it is also a very good vibe. I’m mostly in support of any gender/sexuality headcanon for him and Clarisse that keep him around, because he deserves to be remembered.

I'M BLACK!!! NOT PEOPLE OF COLOUR
I’m fucking angry about these 2024 election results because, once again, they show how little Black lives mean to this country’s political system. We turn out and cast our votes, hoping for change, hoping for leaders who will fight for us—and yet, the policies that follow rarely benefit us. The pattern of empty promises and token gestures toward racial justice is clear, and I’m tired of it. When Black Americans show up to vote, we’re not asking for favors or handouts. Fucking asking or demanding justice, safety, and equality—basic rights we’re constantly denied. We’ve been waiting for meaningful progress on police reform, education, and economic equity, but the message from Washington is loud and clear: our struggles aren’t a priority. After generations of dedication to this democracy, we deserve more than these weak attempts at change. The constant grouping of Black people under “people of color” or “marginalized communities” dilutes our experience and fucking minimizes the depth of the issues we face. This election has made it painfully clear that leaders will keep overlooking Black lives if they can get away with it. They’ll use blanket terms and pass watered-down policies, but they won’t put in the work to deliver real, transformative change. I am fucking done being patient. Black Americans are more than a voting bloc or a talking point. We’re a force in this country, and our needs to our history and experiences. We deserve policies tailored to our community, not diluted with vague, broad “diversity” initiatives that don’t target the root of our issues. Until Black lives are seen, valued, and respected by our political leaders, my fucking anger won’t subside. This fucking election, like so many before it, proves that the fight is far from over. We need leaders who actually see us and stand for us, not ones who just offer lip service when it’s time to collect fucking our votes.

@falestine-yousef is a 36 year old mother to a 3 month old baby boy in Palestine. She and her husband have been living in tents since their homes were bulldozed. They are surrounded by waste and sewage, riddled with disease, unable to acquire medicine, diapers, or proper food and water while trying to care for their new baby. Please help them survive this.
