cell bio professor closed out today's lecture on free-radical oxidation in mitochondria and programmed cell death by saying "you've probably all seen those commercials for fruit juice that says it's got antioxidants, which are said to prevent this sort of thing from happening, or at least slow it down. well, they don't work. this is an inevitable fact of life— this process that lets us live is also the thing that kills us, and it's why all of us will die someday. there's no escaping that. it's been with us since the dawn of eukaryotic cells; our pact with mitochondria is to the death. anyway, enjoy the rest of your friday, and remember, exam four is next week!"

I'm going to hold your hand when I say this: get that degree. Teenage me only decided to go to college as an excuse to escape my city and start over. I didn’t fully appreciate the opportunity at the time because I was immature, naive, and convinced I could “make it” in life through other means like starting a business, chasing fame, becoming a content creator. I thought I was somehow special. But that kind of thinking didn’t come from nowhere; it was the result of being influenced by online voices selling the dream of “escaping the rat race” through showing only the highlights while glossing over the risks, instability, and long-term consequences and looking down on those who chose more traditional career paths.
Even if you know deep down that you don’t want to work a 9–5 or stay in the corporate world forever, at the very least, get your degree. Higher education broadens your mind. It exposes you to new ideas, people, and environments you wouldn’t have encountered otherwise. It challenges your thinking, refines your perspective, and makes you more intellectually equipped for life. And if you manage to get practical experience in the field while you’re studying or after graduating, you may even discover that you enjoy the field, or that the skills and credentials can be used later to build a business or pursue something more creative with a solid foundation behind you.
Most importantly, it gives you a cushion, a safety net, in case your alternative paths don’t pan out the way you imagined. Don’t let internet personalities convince you that college is a scam or that there’s no value in higher education. Don’t waste your precious youth chasing illusions when you could be laying down the pillars that will support you for a lifetime. Be strategic. Give yourself options. And don’t mistake noise for wisdom.

ranking the best things I have had heard surgeons say mid-surgery:
"Five second rule!" while scrubbed, after dropping a sterile scalpel on the floor (no they did NOT pick it up again but I swear everyone's buttholes puckered)
(spoken during the closing of a particularly long and difficult case) "Nurse - my tunes." :heavy metal starts blasting:
Gently to a fretful patient, pre-anaesthesia: "It's going to be okay. I promise, I've dealt with worse." As soon as the patient is unconscious: "This is literally the worst thing I've ever seen."
[okay this one was a med student] "Wowwww, that's so gross!!" Reg: ""[xxx], "Please remember that the patient is awake for this procedure." Student to patient: "Oh my god. I am so sorry, that was really unprofessional - " Patient, cheerfully, also engrossed with what's happening inside them on the screen: "Nah - it's, like, super gross, right?"
[another procedure where the patient couldn't be anaesthetised] Patient: *starts singing country roads midway through the procedure* Surgeon: *shrugs and joins in with surprisingly good harmony*

My mom got phished in an EXTREMELY refined scam that pretty much anyone could fall for-- basically her account was already pre-hacked and they spoofed the bank's number exactly, called her pretending there was fraud, and read back legitimate and fake transactions and personal info so she wouldn't suspect they weren't the bank. Then discouraged her from logging in claiming the account was locked so they could investigate the fraud-- all so she wouldnt catch them making massive purchases using her stolen info.
We have the same boss and when she told him what happened he recommended she call the bank directly, so she did and they managed to catch it in time before $20k of transactions went through. Very scary
I guess the lesson here is never ever answer your phone, I love that fraud is so rampant an entire form of mass communication is now useless
ANYONE can fall for phishing scams- my mom is extremely smart and we discuss common scams that target her age demographic and she still fell for this. If it happened to me I may have fallen for it too. Always be careful!
