nearly 50,000 grad students and researchers are on strike at the university of california this week for fair pay and benefits, one of the largest strikes in years, but this won’t get the national attention it deserves from politicians and the media because a) it’s on the west coast and b) since the people on strike almost all have college degrees it’s not viewed as a “traditional labor” issue.

A quarter of grad students at the UC faced food insecurity even before the pandemic, people work multiple jobs, live in their cars, and rack up massive amounts of debt while working at the UC.

Does anyone have a phd in experimental psychology (with a developmental focus) or something similar from an average university/ college that was actually able to get a promising job. Like something with a livable wage and at least a reasonable amount of job security (I’m not talking about tenure - I know that takes time but something that could at least potentially lead to tenure). I need guidance. I’m working so hard on my phd and sometimes I feel like it’s all for nothing because I don’t know if there is any opportunity to actually do research and teach as a career. Any advice (in the comments or in my direct messages) would be greatly appreciated!
