Replenishing the Nonfiction Stack; or, We're Calling the Book Buying Ban a Wash, Officially.
I am not, apparently, immune to coupons for niche nonfiction that's directly up my alley (octopus minds and RUSSIAN OWLS, hello??? Thanks, bookshop!).
I thought perhaps the BURGLAR'S GUIDE would also be covered under said coupon, since it was publisher-specific (alas: it was Not, but we might as well bundle for shipping purposes). And then while I was shopping IRL for gifties I found a copy of ROOM, which has been on my list for...ever? So! Hopefully these will hold me over on the nonfiction front for a minute!

you tried! and it probably feels great to get back to it and understand it once you've progressed enough :)

Weekly Bookish Question #386 (April 21st - April 27th 2024)
Of course we can’t know how much we will enjoy a book we haven’t read yet, but what was the last book you really took a chance on?

I get that - sometimes an acquaintance will ask me what I'm reading right now (because people usually know that I'm a reader) and I will sometimes just tell them about a recent read if the actual current read is something I don't want to get into with them.
I also think the follow-up questions are a good point - there's a difference between the information being accessible (i.e. they could go to my storygraph/goodreads and see) and having to have a conversation about it.

Weekly Bookish Question #385 (April 14th - April 20th 2024)
Are there any books you wouldn’t want (certain) people to know you’re reading? Why is that? (or are you completely open about your reading choices?)

Fun fact: my students are the ones making me read the romance that's on the erotica side (they can read some books of their choosing and for some reason they like to choose those despite knowing they'll have to talk to me about them... baffling! I would never!)

Absolutely understandable!
I currently have the problem that I'm reading books my students picked that I would never pick up, but I still want to track them so they count towards my reading goals and I'm just living with the embarrassment I guess, but I don't enjoy it....
