Tuk Tuk Racket In Colombo
PARK WEST APARTMENT COLOMBO 5 July 17 2021 8.00Pm
FORWARDED AS RECEIVED
I'm Murad from 2/4. I had a very bad experience last night down Elibank road and thought of sharing this  incident with you all.
When I was driving back home at around 8 PM down Elibank Road last night, I got mugged by a three wheeler guy just a few meters away from the apartment. He suddenly appeared from nowhere and forced me to stop the vehicle. Then demanded for cash from me claiming that my vehicle hit him when he was getting into his three wheeler. He threatened and forced all the cash out of my wallet and demanded for more by asking me to go to an ATM to withdraw more cash. I then drove the vehicle to my father in law's which is in the same vicinity pretending to be going to an ATM and he was following me. When I got there he approached me again and asked what I was trying to do and quickly fled away when he figured I was trying to get help.
We informed the police and they warned us to be extra careful and vigilant as these kind of rackets and organized crimes are taking place a lot around Colombo. We could become easy targets when we are in lonely areas. Thought I'll share this so that you all will be extremely careful.
Now it will flow to the suburbs too so be very diligent even during day time.

TRAVESTY By Aitkin Spence
I arrived in Sri Lanka on June 6th, 2021 to visit my elderly parents. I was request by the government to do a 14 day quarantine at a hotel despite being fully vaccinated. Upon my arrival on June 6th, 2021 the government changed the rules that allowed us to quarantine at home after a one night’s stay with a negative PCR test result. I reserved and prepaid for 14 days with Heritance hotel, Negombo owned by Aitkin Spence. As requested by them I paid the full amount of Rs. 450,000 (US dollars $2,250) for the entire package. Since the government changed the rules as of June 6th, I was required to stay only one night. I requested a refund of the 13 unused days, and it was denied. This was after requesting the refund from the highest executives at Aitkin Spence. This is blatant robbery. COVID was bad enough for the entire world to deal with but coming to Sri Lanka and having to deal with this kind of unethical greed from a reputed company was a second blow to me. I still cannot reconcile myself to the fact that such a reputable hotel could hide behind their policies and behave in such dishonest and crass manner. The change in date was not my doing but was a change by the government and hence the right thing to do was to refund the balance monies.  The staff at the hotel was exceptionally good but I would NOT recommend the group of hotels owned by Aitkin Spence to any foreign or local traveler. IT IS A TRAVESTY. Please share, this should not happen to any other traveler.
THIS IS FROM MY FRIEND WHO LIVES IN FLORIDA!!!!! SL IS FULL OF CROOKS!!!!!

European Parliament Works WONDERS In Sri Lanka
Court of Appeal Order Leaves CCD Case Against Shani Abeysekera In Tatters FacebookTwitterWhatsAppShare
The Court of Appeal tore the police case against Shani Abeysekera to pieces in its bail order, calling the charges a sham designed to ‘prejudice and harm’ the star criminal investigator and former CID Chief by the ‘backers of convicted murderers.”
The Court slammed what it called “extraordinary delays” filing the complaint against Abeysekera and three junior officers who investigated the Mohammed Shiyam murder in 2013. Two witnesses in the trial came forward in 2020, to claim Abeysekera had coerced their testimony and fabricated evidence to implicate DIG Vas Gunewardane who was convicted of the murder by a High Court Trial-at-Bar. The case against Shani Abeysekera is being investigated by the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) which Vas Gunewardane led before he faced trial for murder.
But the Court of Appeal in its 14 page order granting bail to Abeysekera, said the delays strongly demonstrated that”the allegations against the suspect Shani Abeysekera are a result of falsification and embellishment”, and a “creature of afterthought”.
According to the Court of Appeal, complaining about Abeysekera’s conduct during a murder investigation eight years ago cost the complaint the “benefit of the advantage of spontaneity.” The Court of Appeal said the complainants had ample time and ability to make the complaint.
The delayed complaint “smacks of the introduction of a fabricated, false version and an exaggerated account or concocted story involving a set of collaborators or conspirators to unduly cause prejudice and harm to the suspect Shani Abeysekera,” the Court of Appeal said in its order.
The Court of Appeal sits in the Superior Courts Complex in Hulftsdorp, Colombo
The CA Order, written by Justice Bandula Karunaratne, said that the statements provided by witnesses who complained against Abeysekera in 2020 are contradictory to statements they had made in 2014, when the murder probe was underway.
The Court observed that the police had made a “blatant attempt to frame allegations through fabrication of false evidence” against Abeysekera, by reporting the statements of “apparent backers and supporters or collaborators of the convicted murderers” before the Magistrate’s Court of Gampaha.
The Court of Appeal said that based on the material presented to court, no credible evidence had been provided to substantiate the position that Abeysekera had committed offences under the Penal Code, and the Offensive Weapons and Explosives Act. “No credible evidence had been brought to the attention of the Court to substantiate this position or credibly establish a semblance of a prima facie case,” the Court of Appeal said, referring to the CCD Investigation against Abeysekera.
The Court order said that while Abeysekera had been in remand custody for 10 months, there was no cogent material before Court to establish that witnesses had been intimidated by the ex-CID Director.
The order also noted that evidence had been presented to court by Abeysekera’s lawyers that his health was failing.
“Considering the totality of the material placed before us, I am of the considered view that the suspect Shani Abeysekera be enlarged on bail, subject to strict conditions imposed by this Court,” the order said.
Read the Court of Appeal Order of June 16, 2021 in full here:
The witnesses came forward to complain against Abeysekera only after the election of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in November 2019. DIG Vas Gunewardane, the convicted murderer, is a close associate of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Colombo Telegraph learns that as Defence Secretary in 2013/2014, Rajapaksa tried hard to scuttle the Mohammed Shiyam murder probe, when Abeysekera and his team nabbed DIG Vas Gunewardane for the killing. Vas Gunewardane’s appeal is pending before a five judge bench of the Supreme Court, and the witch-hunt launched against Abeysekera is tied to attempts to have the case thrown out of court, Colombo Telegraph learns.
Former Colombo Crime Division DIG Vas Gunewardane was convicted for murder and sentenced to death by a High Court Trial at Bar in November 2015
Damaging the credibility of Shani Abeysekera’s investigations meets a twin objective for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. For nearly two years now, the President has been struggling to justify a pardon for Duminda Silva, another convicted murderer on death row. Silva has exhausted all appeals available to him under the Sri Lankan criminal justice system. As Monitoring MP to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in 2010-2012, Silva had an especially intimate relationship with the current president and former defence secretary. During his time as Monitoring MP, Silva used his influence at MoD to wage war on rivals of his narcotics trafficking operation, using the Sri Lankan forces, with the blessings of then Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa Colombo Telegraph learns. Silva continues to run one of the most efficient drug-trafficking operations from within prison walls in Welikada. Since President Rajapaksa’s election in 2019, Silva has served his death row sentence in the hospital wing of the Welikada prison, where he is afforded all creature comforts.
It was Shani Abeysekera’s investigation that led to Duminda Silva’s conviction for the murder of Premachandra by a High Court Trial at Bar. If his investigations are cast into doubt and the former CID Director is tried and jailed for falsifying evidence, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will win the leverage he needs to issue a presidential pardon for Duminda Silva, without inviting a hailstorm of public outrage. A well-known drug lord in Colombo, Silva is widely unpopular among the Sri Lankan middle classes, although he continues to enjoy some grassroots support in Kolonnawa and Central Colombo areas, where his gangs run illegal narcotics. - MAJOR UBER SCAM ALERT -
Few days ago I had to prepare and send a lunch order to Moratuwa. So I finished preparing and packing the order around 12.00 p.m. and first looked for a PickMe Flash delivery agent but couldn't find any due to whatever the reason. As I had heard of a few cases where ordered food being stolen by UBER riders I had made sure to refrain from using them. But as I couldn’t come to think of any other option and also with the order being needed to be delivered as early as possible I looked for a UBER delivery agent.
A rider accepted the request within few minutes and came to pick the package around 12.45 p.m. That was when I noticed that the vehicle number mentioned in the app (BHW-3851) was different from the number indicated in the number plate of his bike (BJB - 3966), so I asked him why it is different and he simply said that he changed his vehicle. Then I handed over the package to him and he started the trip after asking me how the payment will be done. (It had already been deducted from my bank account and I mentioned that to him)
App indicated that the delivery will be done around 1.20 PM and I right away shared all these details with my customer. Anyway around 1.00 p.m, I got the notification through the app saying that the trip has been completed and the delivery was done. That was doubtful as it surely takes longer to reach Moratuwa from my place so I contacted my customer immediately to check with him if he received the package. Then he told me that he was actually tracking the ride on the app and he had just lost the track of the ride and he had noticed that it happened when the rider was in Maharagama. Then there were all those failed attempts to somehow get in touch with the rider through the app as they don’t provide you with a direct contact number of the rider. The food and the rider had just vanished into thin air.
This is just mad; it is daylight robbery. Uber's driver partners are running a fat scam from their backyard and the company doesn’t do anything about it. Better yet, they actually have no clue what is happening. Whenever something like this happens, there is not even a customer service number to connect with an Agent. See, there is your big issue, Uber. Poeple like me who have been scamed cannot even ever get a human response from you. What is your purpose in serving people?
On the other hand just imagine what a threat it is to a small home based business like mine having to go through something as unpleasant as this and the inconvenience it’s causing to a customer who pays in full in advance? I just can’t put that into words.
I call Uber's conduct in this matter highly unethical, lousy and of course unprofessional. And I want all of you people to be warned and to be cautious and think twice before using Uber ever again. So I would like to request all of you to share this message with your families and friends as much as possible.

Dickwella Deprived Of Elusive Maiden Ton As Pallekele's Lights Remain Switched Off
Despite having the facility of flood lights at the Pallekele Stadium, a total number of 24.1 overs of play was lost to bad light on day 2, as Sri Lanka Cricket and the Bangladesh Cricket Boards had not included the usage of ‘Artificial Lights" in their Memorandum of Understanding that was signed between them prior to the commencement of the series.
Tumblr media
Speaking to SportCast an umpiring official confirmed that it had not been agreed by both teams prior to the commencement of the series.
The first paragraph of the ICC Men’s World Test Championship Playing Conditions found in Section 2.8.6 states “ If in the opinion of the Umpires, natural light is deteriorating to an unfit level, they shall authorize the Ground Authority to use artificial lighting so that the match can commence or continue in acceptable conditions.”
Tumblr media
The usage of artificial lights during Test matches played during the day, has been an expected norm and practiced by International Cricket Venues  around the world.
However for some strange reason this important area has been omitted by officials in charge at SLC for reasons best known to them.
These types of blatant omissions by officials entrusted to have an MOC documented, especially when predicted weather patterns signifies that there is a possibility of play being jeopardized, could ring alarm bells and also be viewed suspiciously  by ICC’s Anti-Corruption Officials.
Incidentally even the 1st Test match ended in a high scoring draw with play being affected by bad light too.
Tumblr media
Despite experiencing this at the end of the first Test match, both Cricket Boards decided to continue sticking to their already signed MOU, omitting the clause to use artificial lights for the second test match.
If in the event a clause such as this has not being entered in the MOU, an eminent sports Lawyer clarifying this matter said “ If after the MOU is signed both parties can agree and sign an addendum and also inform the ICC Officials and Umpires regarding this new entered clause for the usage of 'Artificial Lights’ during an ongoing series”.

Sri Lankan Airlines ‘Pilot Cluster’: Covid Positive Pilot Attends Meeting With Chairman, CEO And Over 40 Pilots
Sri Lankan Airlines Chairman Ashok Pathirage, CEO Vipula Gunatilleke, Head of Flight Operations Pravin Wettimuny and over 40 Pilots are now strong candidates to contract the Covid-19 virus, after a pilot who had come in close contact with all of them at a meeting held on the 18th of January 2021 had already been tested and found to be positive, even before the meeting had begun.
This entire fiasco commenced when a Captain (name withheld to maintain his privacy) arrived from Melbourne on the 18th January 2021 and was unaware that he had tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.
Tumblr media
File Photo – Picture via Sri Lankan Airlines FB page
Prior to departure to Melbourne on the 16th January 2021, the said Captain had completed the standard RT Antigen Test in Colombo and was found to be negative.
However according to Australian regulations the Captain had to undergo a PCR Test upon arrival into Melbourne.
At the time of departing Melbourne on the 17th January 2021, the Captain had not yet received his PCR test results as his layover in Melbourne was less than 48 hours.
The Captain then arrived in Colombo on the morning of 18th January 2021 and was dropped off at his residence after his duty ended.
A few hours later he attended a meeting that Chairman Ashok Pathiage, CEO Vipula Gunatilleke and Head of Flight Operations Pravin Wettimuny had arranged to speak to over 40 pilots of the airline.
The meeting ended and all those who attended either dispersed back to their offices or returned to their respective homes.
However shortly thereafter the Australian authorities informed Sri Lankan Airlines and it soon became public knowledge that the said Captain’s conducted PCR Test results on the 16th of January 2021 in Melbourne had been positive.
However even on the 19th of January 2021, business continued as usual especially for those that attended the meeting.
Meanwhile allegations have now been levelled at Chairman Ashok Pathirage, CEO Vpula Gunatilleke and Head of Flight Operations Pravin Wettimuny for playing down this incident and for not reporting this serious matter immediately to the Health Authorities, as it is their said duty.
Instead the Head of Flight Operations Wettimuny had taken a decision to have only those pilots who travelled with Covid-19 positive Captain in the staff vehicle isolated.
As per the Ministry of Health guidelines, anyone who comes in contact with a Covid-19 patient should be quarantined.
If the Ministry of Health guidelines was to be respected and followed then a colossal number of pilots, its Chairman, CEO, Head of Flight Operations, their respective families, their office staff and anyone who came in contact with them all have to be immediately isolated.
But in a land like no other where one law does not govern everyone anymore, the new Covid-19 ‘Pilot Cluster is now possibly destined to take-off and infect thousands of innocent people, due the sheer negligence of Sri Lankan Airline’s Senior Management.
