And so they came, at a friend's behest. To Ishgard, shining city on the mount, overlooking the dominion of Coerthas... A land that after a thousand years of war had forgotten what it meant to be at peace.
Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Heavensward.

I'm watching Naruto and what do you mean this isn't a Majima karaoke song that was cut from the game —
Original song: No Boy, No Cry by Stance Punks

Okay someone added that in the scene the man says to Majima that Lee will poblably die due to the severity of the wounds, which is a bit better but still pointless and underwhelming
Lee's survival is an ass-pull that ruins yet another cool character's death in the serie, but I'm not going to think about that. I'm going to focus on poor Makoto that will always think Lee's death is her fault.

Saying that "good ideas” and “good execution” are subjective, nebulous concepts is like throwing the whole literary criticism down the drain. And I don't know what you mean with "one of the least-criticized game" because in my country Pirate Yakuza has the lowest score among RGG games, and the narrative is the most criticized aspect of it. Fans don't talk about it much either simply because there is nothing worth remembering or talking about (except the post-credit scene, maybe).
I don't see why I shouldn't mind what the "father" of the series say or do with a character I love. I do mind, because when I played Pirate Yakuza I felt mocked. I also strongly disagree with his statements and sometimes I find them entirely untrue, and that's what bother me the most. As a customer I have all the reasons to speak up. It's really not important if other someones share Yokoyama's ideas or not because he's the one doing the talking and he's the only one I can talk about.
(Yokoyama also said Yakuza 0 is not really his type of game, so I already know me and the man have very different tastes; and I do wonder how much of it influenced his view on Majima in the long run.)
"Nearly all the top picks for his non-protagonist roles were Mad Dog", how can they pick something else if in every non-protagonist roles he's basically always Mad-dogging? If you give me nine scenes where he's mad-dogging and one scene with him acting normal in a non-protagonist role, of course the chance that his Mad-Dog scenes will be picked is higher. They are usually handled better too. And the same could be said about his protagonist scenes tbf. Doesn't demostrate anything.
It's quite obvious the Mad-Dog is part of his character, but that's the point. They don't have to erase that, because it's a part of his character. There are other sides too, though. My point is: how can a writer say he can't, in any possible way, show two different sides of a character within the same story? And only because the character has more screen time than he usually has? If optimism and a strong drive are part of the Mad-Dog, they are also part of Majima, since the Mad-Dog is him.
"every major period of Majima’s adult life where he wasn't an active yakuza has been covered from his perspective already." With all the retconning Yakuza already did, and all the random ideas they carried out, it's really not difficult to come out with an excuse for Majima to leave the Yakuza for one months or two during the thirty-five years of his career. We don't know anything about his life in the 90s, for instance. It's easy, they just don't want to do it.
But since you know quite a lot about interviews and behind the scenes, I'd like to ask you a question: I read a lot of comments online saying there was a ghost writer during 0 development, do you have any infos about it or do you think it's a urban legend?
I'm tired of hearing Yokoyama say it's almost impossible to "make Majima a protagonist if he still has his memory intact" like this is something a good writer would say, or that he isn't "interesting" as if he didn't make eight games about the same guy.
Also incredible how he uses the excuse of the memory loss to say it is the only way to make Majima the protagonist when Majima is the same as always in Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and there is absolutely nothing new about him precisely because he has no memories.

The whole "Majima is all about the element of surprise" seems a bit outdated. I don't think it is why Majima is so loved right now. And I don't think it's what fans expect of him either. If they keep asking about a game with Majima as the protagonist is because they don't want to see ONLY the Mad Dog. Majima is a charismatic character per se. They just want to know more about him.
What I do not agree with is the whole "Majima can't be a protagonist" issue, because there is nothing in writing that won't work. It's all about good ideas and a good execution. It's not even unlikely that Majima - with all his memories intact- would fight for something the player would end up sharing with him.
(Identification is something I do not believe it's necessary to enjoy a good story or game imo, but if they think it is, whatever.)
If we had Yakuza 0 is because someone took his old character and thought of a good reason to humanize him and make him fight for something good, and they managed to do it while maintaining his quirks and not-always-so-virtuous attitude. Is there a reason why they can't do it now? He's not yakuza anymore, and being bleak and pessimistic is actually what made him what he is in Yakuza 0. Seems more of a good oppurtunity than a problem to me. And there is a lot about his past we still don't know.
Also I don't remember Yokoyama talking about Pirate Yakuza specifically. He keeps saying there won't be another game with Majima as the protagonist (which is perfectly fine tbh, too bad he said this even before Pirate Yakuza was announced) and talked about future games featuring Majima as one of the protagonists as "something that won't happen", not even when paired with his brother.
Sometimes I have a feeling that Yokoyama and the yakuza community read his character quite differently and RGG Studio doesn't want to risk spoiling it.

I finally watched Fullmetal Alchemist 2003. I read a lot of opinions in the community before watching it and now when I reread them I find it difficult to agree with many popular opinions. I need to get some things out of my system so this is what this post is about. I do agree FMA03 is an interesting adaptation overall and a good original anime, yet some statement I keep reading online feel deceiving to me now. But let's begin.
Side characters have a better development
Oh man, this one drives me crazy. Can we really say that secondary characters are better? Why would I chose to see more of Nina or Rose, or goddamn Scheska and much less of Riza for instance? (whose role is pretty much the girl that likes her boss?) Why would I want to see Scheska uncover important information about the plot and not Team Mustang or Mustang himself, which made more sense in the context? Why would I want to see Tucker developed instead of introducing new epic characters like Olivier Armstrong and Ling? I'm sorry but secondary characters are better in mangahood, there is absolutely no competition for me.
Edward has a better development since we see him become a State Alchemist
This was actually less interesting to me. The cool thing about Edward is that he's no ordinary protagonist. He's a guy that start at level 100, he's already rich and famous at the beginning of the manga. Arakawa even made an omake about how strange this is. It is actually a very shonen mentality to see the protagonist become stronger and reach his goals on screen, another thing FMA03 is usually praised not to be, but it's actually much more standard in the way it handles the young characters compared to mangahood.
Hughes' death is more impactful because we know him better
How do we know him better? I thought about this for quite some time and I still don't get it. Is it because we see his wife give birth? (taking away one of Winry's best moment? talking about side characters better development). Is it about the few added scenes that are actually pretty similar to mangahood? Because you know, there is much more about Hughes in manga/Brotherhood. There is much more about him in Ishval, there is much more about him in the way Mustang's wound remains open until the end, in their friendship and his support toward his friend. The biggest blow about Hughes' death is that he dies for Roy's dream despite not being a dreamer himself, and not wanting to fight at all, preferring a normal life. And he dies while Roy - the dreamer, the fighter - lives. And this isn't even touched in FMA03. The most disappointing moment for me was probably the funeral, when we see Mustang and Hawkeye talk in front of his grave just like in mangahood but the point of the conversation is not Mustang's pain but Edward's possible development. And Edward's development is in general the main focus of the anime and I will talk about it in the next paragraph too.
Homunculus have more dept
This is actually pretty obvious for some of them as the nature of the homunculus compared to mangahood differ quite a bit. They have a very nice idea for the homunculus in FMA03, probably the best of the show, although those ideas are not always brillantly excecuted (03!Envy is a perfect example of this). In general I noticed they are almost all about Edward's development: the loss of his mother, the son of Izumi that stole his limbs, Greed's death making Edward's belief crumble, Lust giving support, and even Envy would have probably been connected with Edward's hate for his father if only he had more screen time. But Bradley, who has no ties with Edward, for instance is much better in mangahood, from his nature to his writing. Envy is much more deeper in mangahood despite being just one of Father's sins. Gluttony has a bigger role and is cooler in mangahood. Greed has more development in mangahood thanks to Ling. Therefore I can't say I agree fully with the statement.

The most annoying argument people come out with to prove their M/M ship is canon is when they take a chill male character and say "see? He isn't lusting and drooling when a female approaches him, he's clearly gay"
Dude. DUDE. Do you even hear yourself
