Intune App Wrapping Tool

If you use the IntuneWinAppUtil.exe content prep tool to create Win32 apps for deployment through Intune, I created this simple wrapper to speed things up. Use the Microsoft Intune App Wrapping Tool for iOS to enable Intune app protection policies for in-house iOS apps without changing the code of the app itself.

The tool is a macOS command-line application that creates a wrapper around an app. Once an app is processed, you can change the app's functionality by deploying app protection policies to it.

General prerequisites for the App Wrapping Tool

Before you run the App Wrapping Tool, you need to fulfill some general prerequisites:

Download the Microsoft Intune App Wrapping Tool for iOS from GitHub.

A macOS computer that has the Xcode toolset version 11 or later installed.

The input iOS app must be developed and signed by your company or an independent software vendor (ISV).

The input app file must have the extension .ipa or .app.

The input app must be compiled for iOS 12.2 or later.

The input app cannot be encrypted.

The input app cannot have extended file attributes.

The input app must have entitlements set before being processed by the Intune App Wrapping Tool. Entitlements give the app additional permissions and capabilities beyond those typically granted. See Setting app entitlements for instructions.

Apple Developer prerequisites for the App Wrapping Tool

To distribute wrapped apps exclusively to your organization's users, you need an account with the Apple Developer Enterprise Program and several entities for app signing that are linked to your Apple Developer account.

You will need the following to distribute apps wrapped by Intune:

A developer account with the Apple Developer Enterprise Program.

In-house and ad-hoc distribution signing certificate with valid Team Identifier.

You will need the SHA1 hash of the signing certificate as a parameter to the Intune App Wrapping Tool.

In-house distribution provisioning profile.

Steps to create an Apple Developer Enterprise account

Go to the Apple Developer Enterprise Program site.

In the top right of the page, click Enroll.

Read the checklist of what you need to enroll. Click Start Your Enrollment at the bottom of the page.

Sign in with the Apple ID of your organization. If you don't have one, click Create Apple ID.

Select your Entity Type and click Continue.

Fill out the form with your organization's information. Click Continue. At this point, Apple contacts you to verify that you are authorized to enroll your organization.

After verification, click Agree to License.

After agreeing to license, finish by purchasing and activating the program.

If you are the team agent (the person who joins the Apple Developer Enterprise Program on behalf of your organization), build your team first by inviting team members and assigning roles. To learn how to manage your team, read the Apple documentation on Managing Your Developer Account Team.

Steps to create an Apple signing certificate

Go to the Apple Developer portal.

In the top right of the page, click Account.

Sign in with your organizational Apple ID.

Click Certificates, IDs & Profiles.

Click the in the top right corner to add an iOS certificate.

Choose to create an In-House and Ad Hoc certificate under Production.

Note

If do not plan to distribute the app, and only want to test it internally, you can use an iOS App Development certificate instead of a certificate for Production. If you use a development certificate, make sure the mobile provisioning profile references the devices on which the app will be installed.

Click Next at the bottom of the page.

Read the instructions on creating a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) using the Keychain Access application on your macOS computer.

Follow the instructions above to create a Certificate Signing Request. On your macOS computer, launch the Keychain Access application.

On the macOS menu at the top of the screen, go to Keychain Access > Certificate Assistant > Request a Certificate From a Certificate Authority.

Follow the instructions from the Apple developer site above on how to create a CSR file. Save the CSR file to your macOS computer.

Return to the Apple developer site. Click Continue. Then upload the CSR file.

Apple generates your signing certificate. Download and save it to a memorable location on your macOS computer.

Double-click the certificate file you just downloaded to add the certificate to a keychain.

Open Keychain Access again. Locate your certificate by searching for its name in the top right search bar. Right-click on the item to bring up the menu and click Get Info. In the example screens, we are using a development certificate instead of a production certificate.

An informational window appears. Scroll to the bottom and look under the Fingerprints label. Copy the SHA1 string (blurred out) to use as the argument for '-c' for the App Wrapping Tool.

Steps to create an In-House Distribution Provisioning profile

Go back to the Apple Developer account portal and sign in with your organizational Apple ID.

Click Certificates, IDs & Profiles.

Click the in the top right corner to add an iOS provisioning profile.

Choose to create an In House provisioning profile under Distribution.

Click Continue. Make sure to link the previously generated signing certificate to the provisioning profile.

Follow the steps to download your profile (with extension .mobileprovision) to your macOS computer.

Save the file in a memorable location. This file will be used for the -p parameter while using the App Wrapping Tool.

Download the files for the App Wrapping Tool from GitHub to a macOS computer.

Double-click Microsoft Intune App Wrapping Tool for iOS.dmg. A window with the End User License Agreement (EULA) will appear. Read the document carefully.

Choose Agree to accept EULA, which mounts the package to your computer.

An easy way to run the App Wrapping Tool is to put all the command arguments into a plist file. Plist is a file format similar to XML that you can use to input your command line arguments using a form interface.

Post-wrapping

After the wrapping process completes, the message 'The application was successfully wrapped' will be displayed. If an error occurs, see Error messages for help.

The wrapped app is saved in the output folder you specified previously. You can upload the app to the Intune admin console and associate it with a mobile application management policy.

Important

When uploading a wrapped app, you can try to update an older version of the app if an older (wrapped or native) version was already deployed to Intune. If you experience an error, upload the app as a new app and delete the older version.

You can now deploy the app to your user groups and target app protection policies to the app. The app will run on the device using the app protection policies you specified.

How often should I rewrap my iOS application with the Intune App Wrapping Tool?

The main scenarios in which you would need to rewrap your applications are as follows:

The application itself has released a new version. The previous version of the app was wrapped and uploaded to the Intune console.

The Intune App Wrapping Tool for iOS has released a new version that enables key bug fixes, or new, specific Intune application protection policy features. This happens after 6-8 weeks through GitHub repo for the Microsoft Intune App Wrapping Tool for iOS.

For iOS/iPadOS, while it is possible to wrap with different cert/provisioning profile than the original used to sign the app, if the entitlements specified in the app are not included in the new provisioning profile, wrapping will fail. Using the '-e' command-line option, which removes any missing entitlements from the app, to force wrapping to not fail in this scenario can cause broken functionality in the app.

Collecting logs for your wrapped applications from the device

Use the following steps to get logs for your wrapped applications during troubleshooting.

Go to the iOS Settings app on your device and select your LOB app.

Select Microsoft Intune.

Toggle the Display Diagnostics Console setting to On.

Launch your LOB application.

Click on the 'Get Started' link.

You can now share logs through email or copying them to a OneDrive location.

Note

The logging functionality is enabled for apps that have wrapped with the Intune App Wrapping Tool version 7.1.13 or above.

Collecting crash logs from the system

Your app may be logging useful information to the iOS client device console. This information is useful when you are having problems with the application and need to determine if the issue is related to the App Wrapping Tool or the app itself. To retrieve this information, use the following steps:

Reproduce the issue by running the app.

Collect the console output by following Apple's instructions for Debugging Deployed iOS Apps.

Wrapped apps will also present users the option to send logs directly from the device via email after the app crashes. Users can send the logs to you to examine and forward to Microsoft if necessary.

Certificate, provisioning profile, and authentication requirements

The App Wrapping Tool for iOS has some requirements that must be met in order to guarantee full functionality.

The default policy in a wrapped app is authentication on re-launch. iOS handles any external notification (like a phone call) by exiting the app and then re-launching it.

Before wrapping your app, you can grant entitlements to give the app additional permissions and capabilities that exceed what an app can typically do. An entitlement file is used during code signing to specify special permissions within your app (for example, access to a shared keychain). Specific app services called capabilities are enabled within Xcode during app development. Once enabled, the capabilities are reflected in your entitlements file. Steps to enable entitlements

Enable capabilities in your app:

a. In Xcode, go to your app's target, and click Capabilities.

b. Turn on the appropriate capabilities. For detailed information about each capability and how to determine the correct values, see Adding Capabilities in the iOS Developer Library.

c. Note any IDs that you created during the process. These may also be referred to as the AppIdentifierPrefix values.

d. Build and sign your app to be wrapped.

Enable entitlements in your provisioning profile:

a. Sign in to the Apple Developer Member Center.

b. Create a provisioning profile for your app. For instructions, see How to Obtain the Prerequisites for the Intune App Wrapping Tool for iOS.

c. In your provisioning profile, enable the same entitlements that you have in your app. You will need to supply the same IDs (the AppIdentifierPrefix values) that you specified during the development of your app.

d. Finish the provisioning profile wizard and download your file.

Ensure that you have satisfied all the prerequisites, and then wrap the app.

Troubleshoot common errors with entitlements

If the App Wrapping Tool for iOS shows an entitlement error, try the following troubleshooting steps.

IssueCauseResolutionFailed to parse entitlements generated from the input application.The App Wrapping Tool cannot read the entitlements file that was extracted from the app. The entitlements file might be malformed.Inspect the entitlements file for your app. The following instructions explain how to do so. When inspecting the entitlements file, check for any malformed syntax. The file should be in XML format.Entitlements are missing in the provisioning profile (missing entitlements are listed). Repackage the app with a provisioning profile that has these entitlements.There is a mismatch between the entitlements enabled in the provisioning profile and the capabilities enabled in the app. This mismatch also applies to the IDs associated with particular capabilities (like app groups and keychain access).Generally, you can create a new provisioning profile that enables the same capabilities as the app. When IDs between the profile and app don't match, the App Wrapping Tool will replace the IDs if it is able to. If you still get this error after creating a new provisioning profile, you can try removing entitlements from the app by using the –e parameter (see Using the –e parameter to remove entitlements from an app section).

Find the existing entitlements of a signed app

To review the existing entitlements of a signed app and provisioning profile:

Find the .ipa file and change its the extension to .zip.

Expand the .zip file. This will produce a Payload folder containing your .app bundle.

Use the codesign tool to check the entitlements on the .app bundle, where YourApp.app is the actual name of your .app bundle.:

Use the security tool to check the entitlements of the app's embedded provisioning profile, where YourApp.app is the actual name of your .app bundle.

Remove entitlements from an app by using the –e parameter

This command removes any enabled capabilities in the app that are not in the entitlements file. If you remove capabilities that are being used by the app, it can break your app. An example of where you might remove missing capabilities is in a vendor-produced app that has all capabilities by default.

Security and privacy for the App Wrapping Tool

Use the following security and privacy best practices when you use the App Wrapping Tool.

The signing certificate, provisioning profile, and the line-of-business app you specify must be on the same macOS machine that you use to run the app wrapping tool. If the files are on a UNC path, ensure that these are accessible from the macOS machine. The path must be secured via IPsec or SMB signing.

The wrapped application imported into the admin console should be on the same computer that you run the tool on. If the file is on a UNC path, ensure that it is accessible on the computer running the admin console. The path must be secured via IPsec or SMB signing.

The environment where the App Wrapping Tool is downloaded from the GitHub repository needs to be secured via IPsec or SMB signing.

The app you process must come from a trustworthy source to ensure protection against attacks.

Ensure that the output folder you specify in the App Wrapping Tool is secured, particularly if it is a remote folder.

iOS apps that include a file upload dialog box can allow users to circumvent, cut, copy, and paste restrictions applied to the app. For example, a user could use the file upload dialog box to upload a screenshot of the app data.

When you monitor the documents folder on your device from within a wrapped app, you might see a folder named .msftintuneapplauncher. If you change or delete this file, it might affect the correct functioning of restricted apps.

Intune App Wrapping Tool for iOS with Citrix MDX mVPN

This feature is an integration with the Citrix MDX app wrapper for iOS/iPadOS. The integration is simply an additional, optional command-line flag, -citrix to the general Intune App Wrapping Tools.

Requirements

To use the -citrix flag, you will also need to install the Citrix MDX app wrapper for iOS on the same macOS machine. The downloads are found on Citrix XenMobile Downloads and are restricted to Citrix customers only after signing in. Make sure this is installed in the default location: /Applications/Citrix/MDXToolkit.

Note

Support for Intune and Citrix integration is limited to iOS 10+ devices only.

Use the -citrix flag

Our Verdict

Sophos Home Premium has the most extensive and up-to-date approach to fighting malware at an unbeatable price.

Sophos released its latest version of what it simply calls Sophos Home (free) and Sophos Home Premium (paid) just before we began testing, and as such it may have a leg up on competitors that have revisions in progress. As it stands, the set of features, cloud-based configuration, and price make it the outstanding entrant in the field.

On its anti-virus performance, it’s not perfect, but it’s close. AV-TEST found it detected 98.4 percent of macOS malware, over 95 percent of macOS PUA, and over 99 percent of Windows malware. Those scores could be marginally better, but these databases are constantly being updated. During our real-world tests, it knocked out macOS malware as soon as it was unzipped from an encrypted archive. It also prevented us from loading web pages with malicious software via the WICAR test site.

Sophos doesn’t have a full standalone app to manage its operation. Rather, you use the cloud-based Web app in a browser to handle configuration, operation, and remote management of other systems. Sophos appears in macOS as just a system menu item with a few options, such as the ability to perform a manual scan. Because the software protects a system in real time, the scan function is needed only if protection is otherwise paused.

The cloud-based approach allows Sophos to push updates to its interface without requiring a user download, and it has the most robust remote management of any of the software packages we tested. Only Sophos seems to put all controls in the cloud, while other AV software that offer Web-based controls have just a subset, such as initiating a remote scan.

Sophos markets this as a way to help family members, especially ones not at the same address. That’s apparent both from the licensing, with a $50 a year fee covering up to 10 computers (Mac and PC), and from how the license owner can send a link for another person to install and join the family group without additional steps for setup. Then the administrator can configure and run scans remotely.

As one of only two companies offering ransomware-specific file monitoring, Sophos rises to the top with a proviso: We were unable to independently test the feature separately, although we had it demonstrated for us by the company and examined said demo in-depth. (More on that in a moment.) That’s because Apple’s silent XProtect feature has definitions for all known ransomware, blocking it from running. XProtect uses virus signatures, so cannot protect against new ransomware malware or variants, but will block anything already discovered.

The demo Sophos showed us used an in-house ransomware test package developed by its research side. We examined script on our own, and it’s straightforward—we didn’t find any weird gotchas or wired demos in it. As the demonstration virus infected files, the originals were retained and not deleted, and by the time three files had been hit, Sophos Home Premium halted the attack and alerted the user. It’s possible to have legitimate software that encrypts or modifies a set of files, and thus the software provides an alert and won’t allow the putative file to delete documents.

Sophos Home also includes outbound network blocking to known malicious servers, malicious website blocking, web filtering for parental control, and alerts for mic and webcam usage. Sophos handles the web and network stuff via its kernel extension, which examines all traffic and allows central management of options.

The bottom line

Sophos Home Premium is the best in show, providing effective malware protection, PUA protection, ransomware monitoring, and additional features that often require separately licensed software. Its cloud-based configuration and generous licensing makes it possible to protect a household and an extended family, giving it an edge over its nearest competition.

If you’re considering Sophos’ free version, it’s quite good but lacks enough of the Premium version’s features that we recommend the free version of Avast Security instead.

To check whether you have the latest version, and to install it right away if you don’t, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

If you are wondering why there is no iPadOS update numbered 12.5.2, that’s because there was no separately named product called “iPadOS” until version 13 came out.

Up to and including version 12, both iPads and iPhones used the version called “iOS”.

All that Apple is saying about the vulnerability so far is that:

Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to universal cross site scripting. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.

The TL;DR version is: “Crooks have found a way to trick your browser into giving them access to private data they aren’t supposed to see, and as far as we know they are already abusing this bug to do bad things.”

WebKit vulnerable

Just like the last emergency Apple patch, this vulnerability affects WebKit, Apple’s core web browser code.

Although WebKit itself isn’t a fully-fledged browser, it is nevertheless the heart of every browser you’ve ever used on your iPhone, not just Apple’s own built-in Safari browser.

That’s because Apple won’t allow apps onto your device if they don’t come from the App Store, and won’t allow browsers into its App Store if they don’t use WebKit.

(OK, there are official ways of installing non-Apple corporate apps onto managed devices, but for most users, and on most iPhones, all apps come via Apple.)

As a result, even browsers such as Firefox (which usually uses Mozilla’s browser engine), as well as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge (which usually use the Chromium browser engine), are forced to rely internally on WebKit when they run on Apple devices.

Also, WebKit is the software that runs whenever any app pops up even the most basic web content in a window, for example to show you its About screen or to give you instructions on how to use the app.

In other words, a security flaw in WebKit affects any browser you have installed, including Apple’s built-in Safari app, and could affect many other apps if they have any program options that pop up a web window to show you information.

Universal XSS

Last time Apple did an emergency update, back in January 2012, the company fixed two bugs that allowed crooks to perform what are known as RCE and EoP attacks, short for remote code execution and elevation of privilege.

Loosely speaking, RCE lets you break in as a regular user, and EoP lets you promote yourself to an all-powerful system user after you’re in – a sort of double-play attack that is obviously very serious and could lead to complete compromise.

This time, the update patches what’s known as a UXSS vulnerability, short for universal cross site scripting.

Although UXSS doesn’t sound as serious as RCE (which implies that a crook could directly implant malware at will), UXSS bugs can nevertheless be devastating to your privacy, your security, and your wallet.

Simply put, a UXSS flaw means that WebKit itself can be tricked into violating one of the most important principles of browser security, known as the Same Origin Policy (SOP).

SOP explained

The Same Origin Policy dictates that only web content served up by website X is allowed to access stored data, such as web cookies, that relate to site X.

As you probably know, web cookies and local web storage exist so that websites can keep track of you between visits.

Cookies, for example, can be used to store the preferences you choose; to remember whether you already accepted a licence agreement or not; and to determine whether you’ve already logged in, and if so as which user.

As intrusive as web tracking can sometimes be, especially when it is used for aggressive marketing purposes, it’s nevertheless a vital part of the modern web.

If websites couldn’t set cookies to store some sort of authentication token (typically a long, random string of characters unique to your current session) to indicate that you recently entered your username and the correct password, then there would be no concept of being “logged in” to a website at all.

You would need to enter your username and password every time you looked at any page on the site; you wouldn’t be able to tell the website “please show me the Spanish language version instead of the English one next time I visit”; and there wouldn’t be any way of keeping track of things like shopping carts.

Clearly, it’s vital that cookies set for one website can’t be snooped on by another.

As you can imagine, if website X could send out JavaScript code to access the cookies and local web data of website Y, that would be a security disaster.

Without the SOP, an innocent-looking site of cat videos could, if it wanted, read in the authentication cookies for your social media accounts and rifle through them in the background, pretending to be you, even after you’d finished watching the distracting videos.

Without the SOP, you could end up spending money you didn’t mean to, or signing up for services you didn’t want, or giving cybercriminals access to your most personal data from your online profiles.

XSS and breaking the SOP

XSS bugs, where XSS means cross-site scripting, are the most common way that cybercrooks violate the Same Origin Policy in order to get unlawful access to private data in your online accounts.

Usually, XSS attacks exist because of bugs on a specific website, meaning that crooks can attack users of that website only.

For example, if I can trick your website in returning a search result page that includes not only the text I just searched for but also a chunk of executable JavaScript, then I have a way of pulling off an XSS attack against your site.

That’s because, when your site returns my sneakily-supplied JavaScript inside one of its own web pages, my JavaScript suddenly get access to all your cookies and local web data, which I’m not supposed to have.

That’s bad enough, but server-side XSS tricks typically only affect one website at a time, and the operator of that site can fix the security hole for everyone by patching the server.

A Universal XSS bug, which is what we have here, is much more serious, and it gets the name “universal” because it’s not limited to a specific website.

Simply put, a UXSS bug typically means that attackers can pull off XSS tricks right inside your browser, so that:

All websites you visit are affected by the bug, at least in theory, including sites with no security holes of their own.

You need to patch the vulnerability for yourself, because the bug is in your browser, not in any individual web server.

You can’t sidestep the bug simply by avoiding specific web servers until they get patched.

What to do?

We already said it: update now!

However, at the time of writing (2021-03-27T13:00Z) these pages tell you nothing more than: there is a UXSS vulnerability in WebKit; attackers may already be exploiting this bug; it was reported by researchers from Google; and the bug is officially known as CVE-2021-1879.

In fact Java has had its own built-in HTTP client: HttpURLConnection since JDK1.1 (even the super-class, URLConnection is already exists since JDK1.0). But I believed most of us will use HttpComponents Client from Apache, which I also used in below example.

HttpClient does not come with support for SSL/TLS because it doesn't have to. Both security protocols are for the transport layer, while the HTTP protocol operates on top of the transport layer.
