Install Wine On Mac Catalina

MacOS Catalina and 64-bit. Posted on Monday, October 7th, 2019 at 10:34 am. Apple on Monday released macOS Catalina, the newest operating systems for the company’s Macs. While there is a wealth of new features in the latest version, Catalina is also the first macOS to require 64-bit apps. For those that have been following along, 64-bit.

This article is applicable to the following wrappers:

In October 2019 Apple released the newest version of macOS, called Catalina (10.15). Catalina removes support for 32-bit apps, and WINE (which we previously recommended for Mac users installing OnCall) is only available as a 32-bit app. Due to this policy change by Apple, we are no longer able to offer a WINE bundle for Mac users wishing to install OnCall.

Wine (stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator) is a free way to install Windows on your Mac and it works by “wrapping” Windows in macOS. Note that Wine is 32 bit only which means it does not work with macOS Catalina which only supports 64 bit applications.

Install Wine Mac Mojave Ca. If the installer shows a list of apps that are not optimized for your Mac, learn about 32-bit app compatibility, then choose whether to proceed with the installation. For the strongest security and latest features, upgrade to macOS Catalina.

Using macOS Catalina 10.15.0 to 10.15.4?

Warning

This section only applies to users who are using macOS Catalina 10.15.0 to 10.15.4

If you do not use macOS Catalina, or you are on macOS Catalina 10.15.5 or later, you can skip this section!

If you don’t know what specific macOS version you’re using, use this Apple support article to learn how to find out.

Apple recently introduced changes to how macOS works. New Macs come with System Integrity Protection.

Therefore, in order to run osu!mac on macOS Catalina 10.15.0 to 10.15.4 you need to disable System Integrity Protection.

Danger

While disabling System Integrity Protection shouldn’t harm your computer directly, you are sorta compromising the integrity of your system (hence the name ‘System Integrity Protection’).

Please be informed about the risks of disabling SIP. Consider updating your macOS instead.

These instructions are quoted from the Apple Developer documentation.

To disable SIP, do the following:

Restart your computer in Recovery mode.

Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold these two keys: Command (⌘) and R.

Release the keys when you see an Apple logo, spinning globe or other startup screen.

You may be prompted to enter a password, such as a firmware password or the password of a user who is an administrator of this Mac. Enter the requested password to continue.

Launch Terminal from the Utilities menu. It should be in the menu bar at the top of your screen.

Run the command csrutildisable.

Restart your computer. You can do so from the top menu bar (just like you would normally)

Once you have SIP disabled, you’re now set to start getting ready with osu!.

Warning

A newer Wineskin with support for M1 Macs (under Rosetta 2), as well as Intel x86 computers (on any modern macOS version) is now available. It brings new stability updates and bug fixes, and we’d encourage updating to this newer version.

You’ll need to use this new version if you want to play on any Apple Silicon computer.

Step 1: Download the Wineskin¶

Note

To play osu! on macOS a compatibility layer called Wine is used. A Wineskin allows a preconfigured version of Wine to be bundled as one app so that you can get right into the game without messing about with the settings.

Once it has downloaded, extract the .zip file.

Move it outside of your Downloads folder, such as your Desktop. This is really important, as not doing so could lead osu! to be sandboxed.

We also recommend downloading Technocoder’s osu!macOS Agent program, since it’ll be used throughout this guide. In general, it’s a great tool that every macOS osu-stable player on Wine should have. However, this is optional (though strongly encouraged) and alternative instructions are provided for those who are comfortable with digging deeper.

Warning

On 12 October 2020 a bug was introduced with an update for osu!macOS Agent. It caused Wineskin.app to display a error that left the settings menu unopenable. You’ll need to download the newest version of osu!macOS Agent, which was updated on 23 January 2021. See Wineskin.app doesn’t open, even if osu! does / exec(number).bat problem.

Step 2: Repair the Wineskin¶

If you try to open the Wineskin immediately, macOS will say that it’s broken. Let’s fix that.

Open osu!macOS Agent

Click the Troubleshoot tab

Click Scan

Once the scan is complete, click Repair

If it was successful, you should see a Fixed indicator next to Quarantineattributeispresent in the log.

Alternative option: Using the Terminal

On the bleeding edge? You can also use the Terminal to repair your Wineskin.

Open Terminal. It should be in your Applications/Utilities folder.

Type the following command.

where ~/path/to/my/osu!.app is the filepath to your osu! install.

For example: if my osu!.app was in the Desktop, the command to enter would be:

Below are some helpful tips if you’re a bit lost, but if you know what you’re doing feel free to skim over them.

Note

For an application with the name osu!.app, the ! will confuse the Terminal window. Therefore, you must escape it by prefixing the ! with a (backslash) to form osu!.app. It is also recommended you enclose the filepath in quotation marks.

Note

You may be asked for your password. While entering your password the cursor might blink but you won’t see any characters appear on the screen - this is normal! Just proceed to type your password as if there was a dialog box there, and hit Enter once you’re done. (If you stuffed it up you’ll get another chance to retype it.)

Tip

If you get a Permissiondenied error it means you aren’t using an administrator account. In your Terminal window, type:

where administrator is the name of your system’s admin account. When the Password: prompt appears, enter your password for administrator (or whatever your admin account is). Then try running the Terminal command (or to do this automatically, type sudo!!).

If you don’t know which account is your admin account (like if you use a family computer), go to the Applemenu (top-left corner of the screen) > SystemPreferences... > Users&Groups and you should be able to see which account is your administrator account. You’ll still need the password to execute the command though.

Note

On older macOS versions, you may get a warning that reads this.

Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your typing when using sudo. Type “man sudo” for more information. To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort.

Type your password as normal, as shown above.

Tip

Having trouble finding the filepath of your osu! installation? You can drag and drop the file from your installation directory (or the Desktop) to get the path!

My Terminal will look slightly different to yours, but the concept (and the command!) remains the same.

Danger

Unless you do something incredibly stupid, you probably won’t completely stuff your computer. That being said, if you do something incredibly stupid, you’ll stuff your computer. The sudo command allows your local user account to perform otherwise restricted actions, so please don’t go around typing random things if something’s not working - ask us a question instead!

Step 3: Updating osu!¶

At this point, you should have already repaired osu! and now you’re set to open it. In some cases, this will work perfectly, but for most people including myself, osu! will be stuck in an update loop. It can even be difficult to kill the process once it starts updating.

If you ever have trouble closing osu! once it’s stuck in an update loop, see Common issues: osu! won’t close.

Open osu!macOS Agent

Click the Other tab

Click Update osu!

This will download the latest executable from the osu! servers and replace the existing osu!.exe inside your Wineskin wrapper.

Alternative option: Manually installing the latest version of osu!

If you’re brave enough to go it alone, these steps will get you the latest version of osu! running - avoiding the possibility of an update loop.

Download osu.exe from osu.ppy.sh/home/download.

Locate where osu!.app (your Wineskin) is installed

Right click on it and select ShowPackageContents

You should now see three files/folders: Contents, drive_c and Wineskin. Click drive_c.

From here, click osu!.

From here, locate osu!.exe and replace this file with the updated version that you just downloaded. Make sure you keep the filename the same.

You also have the ability to hide the start screen or be directed to the app list instead. Use smaller tiles to make your start screen more productive as you can see more apps all at once. Bigger tiles show more up to date details. You can glance at the weather forecast without actually opening the application. The start screen can also adjust to larger resolutions so you have more rows of tiles without needing a huge empty space. The varying sizes of tile apps allow for more convenience in using your mouse or trackpad to navigate. More options to suit you Microsoft also included over 100 different color combinations you can use to personalize your desktop. Windows 8.1 comes with a number of pre-installed starts screen patterns or you can even use your own desktop wallpaper as its background. Desktop apps color coordinate themselves to match the most dominant color in its logo. You can easily see changes on your desktop without jumping in and out of the PC settings app. Just simply go to the personalization panel in the Charms bar and try to change your wallpaper and see if it looks nice.

Search and multitasking

The updated search function goes beyond the ordinary OS search engine. It's now a platform built right unto your computer's system that allows you to search locally and on the internet for whatever you need. Locating a document using this feature will not only lead you to the file but will also offer you search results from the internet and on your app settings. Multitasking is also made easier in Windows 8.1. Switch from one app to the other by simply moving your cursor all the way into the left hand corner, hit click and it leads you to the last app you used.

Where can you run this program?

Computers running on Windows 8 can get a free update to Windows 8.1. You simply have to go to the Windows store and follow the steps to upgrade manually. Windows 8.1 requires your machine to have at least a 1 GHz processor or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2. You will also need at least 1 GB of RAM if you're running on a 32-bit processor or 2 GB RAM for those on 64-bit, and hard disk space of 16 GB or 20 GB respectively. For optimal performance, Windows requires a Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver.

Is there a better alternative?

If you want to stick to a Windows operating system, then Windows 10 would be the wisest choice. It has better security measures and is more reliable and efficient compared to its predecessors. Developers made its recent update less frustrating by reducing clutter, especially in the start menu. You may also customize it by adding applications to suit your needs. This OS also allows you to remove built-in apps you don't think you'll use like Movies & TV, Groove Music, Paint 3D, and more. macOS 10.14 Mojave is the latest operating system for Apple machines. It offers several features that help improve the aesthetic of your computer. Save your eyes from damage by switching to Dark Mode. Organize random content in your desktop through Stacks. Quick Look allows you to perform actions on files without actually opening any application. There are so many useful features to check out.

Our take

Windows 8.1 is definitely an improvement from Windows 8's underwhelming performance. You may take a little more time to get used to it but you have more options to customize this operating system. It's best for laptops with touch screen capabilities. It's a relief that the start button is back, but its interface still feels a little bit awkward. However, if you didn't enjoy Windows 8, this update isn't going to change your opinion about it.

Should you download it?

Yes. If you're still on Windows 8, it's high time for you to get an upgrade to 8.1. But if you have the option to get Windows 10, it's best to grab the opportunity as it would definitely be the wiser choice.

There are aftermarket parts I prefer to use in my overhauls of these. GM had some design flaws in these which got corrected by GM and the aftermarket. When it comes to troubleshooting the 4L60E, you have to keep in mind that the automatic transmission (4L60-E) in your rear wheel drive GM vehicle will usually experience failure in one of two ways:

The Transmission Will Begin Slipping

Internal mechanical failure will be the cause of transmission ‘slippage’.

Your transmission fluid will appear at a low level. This is generally due to a fluid leak somewhere which will result in the transmission slipping.

“It really depends who you ask. Some say it's on borrowed time, and others will say it will be fine as long as it shifts good and all. I'm somewhat in the middle. I'd be a little hesitant, but I also wouldn't be terribly worried of I drove it and it felt good with no slippage or harsh shifts.”

Owner Number Two:

“I have close to 300k on my truck back in the day before I sold it. (The) 4l60e from 1996 held up well. Reverse (kind of) was finicky, every now and then it would slip but had a good life. I honestly think around 250-300k it should be rebuilt if its original.”

“To answer it in short, I took ($2000) put it aside for the (transmission), learned over the fourteen years I’ve owned it, (that it’s a matter of not if, it’s when). (I changed) the fluid regularly and found adding a bottle of Lucas non slip is the best thing. Typically (I) think most that stuff is snake oil but I’m telling you it works, keeps solenoids from sticking too. I do it yearly. Don’t use (overdrive), unless you’re going over 60, you’ll get the same mileage and won’t be wearing the 3-4 out. I drive it easily in 1st till its in 2nd then slowly give it more throttle. Driving it hard that 1-2 shift seems to shorten life How do I know, I’ve been through 5 of these. Just my opinion. (My first transmission) lasted less than 100 miles. (The) last one lasted close to 100k (miles). Seems most of these around 40-50 can go.” Hope you make 300k. (If you do, I would be) shocked. Go easy on them they aren’t all that great, (in my opinion).”

Owner Number Four:

“I would be more interested in the number of shifts before failure. Wear in a transmission in my opinion- mainly occurs during shifts. Once the transmission is in a gear it should see very little wear. Towing and heavy abuse increases fluid temps and reduces lubrication resulting in more wear during shifts. Yes, clutches wear but that is mainly when they slip during application and release. So, to just go off mileage alone is probably not the best way to judge. A 4l60e that has 300k miles from towing between the coasts could be in better shape than one with only 50k miles on it that was stop and go with thousands of shifts per day.”

What Is the Difference Between A 4l60 And A 4l60e Transmission?

The biggest difference between the 4L60 and 4L60E is how both are controlled. For 4L60E control comes from a computer. For the 4L60, control comes form a TV cable. With one being controlled by computer and the other not, there are compatibility issues that the two have.

If you tried to put a 4L60E transmission in the place where a 4L60 once resided, prepare to buy an aftermarket transmission controller so that you can control it.

If you don’t, it will not know when to kick down, when to shift or the speed of the vehicle. The 4L60 transmission would require a custom bracket to hook into the TV cable properly. Additionally, when comparing both transmissions, they don’t also don’t have the same geometry for engaging the torque converter. As a result, you will need torque converters to accomplish engagement.

BTE's TH400 transmission with transbrake is a durable and high performance three speed transmission for all racing types. The new cast aluminum T400 SuperCase is the result of over 2 years of development.

We have an excellent track record with our TH350’s. Deep into the 10’s without failure, they have proven to be a very tough unit for a reasonable price. We feel they are a very good choice in cars up to 600 HP/TQ but capable of up to 800 HP/TQ especially in lighter cars. The limiting factor is the stock planetaries. There are aftermarket planets available to make them live at even higher power levels but we usually recommend a TH400 for a dedicated 600+ HP application. Our goal is to provide long term reliabilty. Our base model TH350 has lived at over 600 HP reliably.

As with all Jake’s Performance transmissions they include all new friction clutches, bands, steel plates, soft parts, filter, modulator (if applicable), as well as hydraulic upgrades, and other modifications depending on power level. All TH350 transmissions include a new pan.

Stage 1 TH350 is reliable to over 500 HP/TQ. It’s a very tough unit. It has several key modifications that increase it’s strength. Increased line pressure and lube flow. The base model will utilize an OEM case and tailhousing. It includes an aluminum forward and direct drum, aerospace material input and intermediate shafts, alloy forward hub, deep aluminum pan, lightened OEM ratio (2.48) gearset, ALL thrust washers replaced with torrington bearings (fully rollerized), and aluminum valve body.

Options include other ratios, Reid SFI case, roller bearing tailhousing, small diameter drums, and other valve bodies.

We offer a TH400 setup for Rockcrawler and off-road applications. This is similar to our Stage I build but uses a HD “K” case 4×4 TH400 core with a reverse pattern manual valve body that retains engine braking. We can upgrade this unit to our other level of builds as necessary for you big power off road guys. Price is $2500.

This build is based on our standard Stage 2 build. It starts with a 4×4 core and HD case (subject to availability). We use a reverse manual valve body with engine braking, a wider 1.25″ intermediate band for engine braking with HD material. A 34 element sprag, offroad specific clutch materials, lubrication modifications, and torrington bearing upgrades are added. Upgrades are available for bigger power combos. Price is $2650.

We’ve pulled out all the stops on this build. It is built specifically for the harsh conditions experienced in offroad competition. We start with a new Reid Racing case for a bulletproof foundation to prevent stress cracks and case failure common when used in rough terrain and/or with a transfer case attached. We include a Reid Super Bellhousing and a new roller tailhousing (where applicable). The next key ingredient to this package is the spragless design used instead of the typical roller clutch or sprag design used for 2nd gear. This requires the state of the art billet aluminum Griner* valve body to control shift timing and includes a direct drum assembly that eliminates the failure prone sprag. An important additional benefit of this design is the extremely strong engine braking ability. Most TH400’s with engine braking rely on the OEM design 1″ wide band. This does not, it uses the entire 2nd gear clutch pack to give the same capacity and strength to engine braking as it does acceleration. Additionally we use 300M input shaft with larger splines in the forward drum, 300M alloy intermediate shaft, and billet alloy steel forward hub. We add torrington needle bearings in several key locations to deal with friction and thrust loading caused during heavy deceleration. We make several lubrication improvements, pump modifications, and other improvements to help with lubrication and cooling issues seen in offroad competition. Citrix workspace silent install. When launching the tool, the below screen is shown Select the options required to be configured during installation. The “Store and Device integration” tab allows to configure the stores (using the “Store” button) as well as Start menu or desktop integration. The “Miscellaneous & Auto Update” tab helps to define settings for the autoupdate feature of Citrix Workspace app, as well as other features (prelaunch, URL redirection, app protection...) When the mouse is over an option, contextual help is displayed, providing additional information as shown below. If “Allow stores addition” or “Allow save password” are changed to “Secure and unsecure stores”, the required registry change for this setting is included. When clicking “Generate CmdLine”, the content of the first textbox (starting by “CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe” or “CitrixReicever.exe” based on selected version) is copied in the clipboard. When clicking “Save as batch file”, a dialogbox pops up asking for a location to save a batch file. A .cmd file is generated with the content of the two textboxes.

At one of my customers, I am upgrading the Citrix XenApp environment to the latest Long Term Service Release (LTSR). In this case, I am upgrading the Citrix Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) to 7.15 LTSR and the Citrix Receiver to version 4.9 LTSR.

The customer has Current Release (CR) installed and needed to be upgraded. It was decided to upgrade to the latest LTSR versions because of the 5 years support cycle.

However, in this blog post, I focus on the installation of the Citrix Receiver with the help of Login Automation Machine (Login AM). To successfully install the Citrix Receiver there are some tricks and tweaks needed. In this bog I will give a solution and a possible explanation.

Unattended install

The first step is to find out if it is possible to install the Citrix Receiver in an unattended way. Citrix has built the installer in a way that the Citrix Receiver can be installed unattended. In addition, Citrix is so kind to provide us with the necessary information, for more, please click here.

After starting a deployment reboot of the test server, I ended up with the following error: “Waiting for other AM event to finishing”

To find out the reason, the log files are a good place to start. To open the log files of the Citrix installer, go to the following folder:

In the “TrolleyExpress” log, the last entry is about the “ICAWebwrapper.msi”. This Microsoft Installer (MSI) has been started, however, it never finished. If we open the corresponding log, it shows that the “ICAWebwrapper.msi” is trying to execute a custom action. Apparently, that custom action is not working and the installation is on a hold and will never finish.

Extract the receiver installer

The Citrix Receiver installation file is a wrapper and is extractable. After extracting, there will be ten separate MSI installer files. For more information how to do this, click here.

This results in a collection of MSI files:

To install the Citrix Receiver in a correct way, Citrix advises to install all the MSI in a special order with some parameters. Thus, for every MSI installer I created a Microsoft Transform (MST) file. For example, with a program called Orca, it is possible to generate a MST file. For more information about Orca, please click here.

With Orca, I added the Citrix recommended properties to the property table and some extra properties I always use when I am making customizations:

I am using the “DONOTSTARTCC” property in the MST file because In a Citrix support document, the “DONOTSTARTCC” property is recommended for installations that are carried out with Group Policy Objects (GPO) and System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) for example. To install the Citrix Receiver, use for every extracted MSI and created MST the following command:

After putting the commands needed to install the Citrix Receiver into Login AM, the installation process is started. Again, the installation process hangs with the same message. The log files show the same problem.

Concluding from the logging, I could try at least two options:

Change the custom action in the MSI table that is causing the problem

Because the custom actions could not finish, install the Citrix Receiver under the system account.

Changing the custom actions table

Earlier, the logging of the installation process showed that the installation was stuck when the ICAWebWrapper.msi was installed. During the installation, there are several custom actions trying to launch a sub process. Because this was not working, I decided to change the custom actions that are responsible for launching this sub process. With the adaptations, the custom actions should not launch any sub process anymore during the installation process. Unfortunately, this did not help and the installation process was stuck on the same error again.

Citrix Receiver Silent Install Parameters

No time to be gentle anymore. I removed the custom actions shown in the Citrix Receiver installer logs and tried to install the Receiver again. Now, this was successful. The Citrix Receiver installed without problems, but as it turned out, the Single-Sign-On option was not working properly. Everything looked fine but apparently, the custom actions I removed were doing more than just starting a sub service.

System account

The last option is to install the Citrix Receiver with the system account. Login AM uses its own service account that is comparable with a normal account that is dedicated to Login AM. However, the system account has more rights and is comparable to a Linux root account.

PsExec

First, it is needed to run the installer under the system account. That can be done with PsExec. PsExec is part of the PsTools package. For more information and a download link, click here.

The PowerShell script is starting PsExec with all the arguments needed to run it in the background. PsExec will, in return, start the command under system account to install the Citrix Receiver.

In Login AM, the PowerShell script, the PsExec.exe file, and the Citrix Receiver installation file will be copied to the local disk of the target machine. Login AM will start the PowerShell script from the targeted machine and the Citrix Receiver will be installed under the system account. In Login AM, it looks like this:

Uninstall older installations

The Citrix Receiver installation automatically uninstalls older Citrix Receiver installations. In this case, the Citrix Receiver Cleanup tool should be used. We want to end with exit code 0. If the Citrix Cleanup tool is not used, the installation will end with exit code: 3010 (A Reboot is required.) As a result, PsExec will stay active in the background and Login AM will give you the following message: “Waiting for other AM event to finish”.

Now the installation is working like a charm. I can only conclude that the newer Citrix Receiver installation files need to be installed under system account because of the custom actions present inside the “ICAWebwrapper.msi”. Also, colleagues who are using SCCM or GPO didn’t come across any issues and these installation tools are all using the system account to install software.
