Part 2 of my Loc hair journey. The beginning of my natural hair journey. During this time, I was incredibly insecure about my TWA. I had shaved all my relaxed hair off one day out of frustration. And I bought a wig to help me feel confident. I also wore braids during this time.
I was in college in Chicago during this time, and unfortunately I didn’t see many women rocking their natural hair. I had to attend hair expos to meet other women with loose natural hair. I laugh now because if I were to step outside now, or even just turn on my TV, I will see women rocking their natural hair. I love to see this! So, I struggled with learning how to care for and style my hair.
I remember in 2012 I stopped at a Carols Daughter booth at an expo, and the stylist looked at my hair like she didn’t want to touch it at all. Like she was afraid of my type 4 hair. 😂
My hair type, at this time, was not really embraced by others. I would receive the confused stares from mostly everyone. And within my own natural hair community I didn’t feel welcome. My hair type was seen as an annoyance to stylists. So, I had to style and care for my hair on my own. But because I was so busy at this time, I decided to just stick to wearing my wigs and braids.

Part 1 of my Loc hair journey. I had relaxers from early childhood until I was maybe 20-21 years of age. I never really liked the look of my hair with a relaxer. I hated the flat look, I hated the lack of volume. And I HATED going to the salon and having to endure that relaxer burn. 😔
I wore braids and ponytails during these times so that I could change up my look. And living in souther California added another to my anxiety that I have to look good. People in SoCal during this time could be INCREDIBLY judgmental, which made me feel incredibly insecure. So I never had the courage to start my natural hair journey then.
But still, I just still wasn’t happy with my hair. I knew that I needed to make a change at some point. So at age 20 in 2011, I decided to make a change….

I am missing Paris. The food in Paris was just so amazingly good. Fresh pastries and breads. Beautiful views in every part of the city. I had lunch daily at the park near the Eiffel. I really miss this beautiful city. We’ve only been home for 4 days but I already want to go back 😔🤣

First international trip to Paris. I highly recommend traveling to this amazing city. There was so much diversity in this lovely city. And the diversity was celebrated here. For a black American, this was a much needed trip. I felt embraced rather than hated or feared. I enjoyed the food, drinks, the people, and the culture of this unique city. I will definitely return.

Before the locs, this was maybe taken in 2016. My natural hair took so much time and energy. I'm so glad I decided to get my locs. 2 years in, and still loving my locs. They allow me to be stress free.

I had an amazing facial the other day! Keeps my skin looking flawless! I recommend dermaplaining. It removes the dead skin cells and leaves the skin feeling and looking brand new. Instagram @locnaturalista
