SpanishDict.com
Hey guys 👋
If you guys have not already, I highly recommend downloading the SpanishDictionary app or check out their website: https://www.spanishdict.com/
This is basically a free Spanish dictionary in your pocket. It has topics on pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, articles surrounding Spanish and Latin American cultures, and even step-by-step lessons plans.
It is completely free (unless you wish to sign up for the premium option to access locked content) and very easy to sign up if you wish to.

Langblr and people who have moved abroad to somewhere with a different main language to their own: how did you prepare yourselves language-wise? I know that while my French is probably fine and I'll learn a lot just by speaking it every day, I still want to do some intense French practice this summer so I feel more confident about living abroad for 8 months, any tips on specific activities would be appreciated <3

Help needed for thesis!
Hi there! 👋🏼😊
I am looking for French native speakers and French learners to help me with my linguistics thesis project. Would you be willing to help me by participating in my experiment? It takes 15 minutes and should be done on a laptop/pc!

Honestly, the more I try to find language learning materials for my friends, the more I realize that, unfortunately, knowing English is often really necessary. Because the fact is, English is basically... a chair language for when you're very short.
That's the only sort of association I can make, because I spent almost two hours looking for normal, non-locked-behind-premium ways to learn French for my friend and her grandma who both don't know any Eng, and out of 10, 8 turned out to be in pure English. Even if I look in target language!!
Often, whether you want to or not, you simply MUST know English if you want to learn another language, because there is critically less material for other languages. Well, unless one just go in store and buys a book. But that's different from trying apps and choosing the one that you like! At least because apps are free...
Ugh, infuriating >.<

Have you tried Momox ? It's a website selling second hand books, I never had any issues with it, and you can get some books for a few euros !
I feel like finding editions of books in your target languages should be easier than it is.
Recently found a few German editions of contemporary books I love in order to help with my reading comprehension and vocabulary skills… but I am challenged to find French editions.
And getting ahold of a physical copy of the books, without having to travel to France or Germany, seems even harder.

Thank you for the tag @gwendolynlerman !
I'll answer in French !
What was the last thing you ate?
What was the last thing you drank that wasn’t water? Note : quitter le bureau = to leave the office
What was the last game you played?
Tumblr media
What was the last movie you watched? The Woman in the Window" Note : "quasi" is the shortened version of the word "quasiment " = almost
What was the last hobby you engaged in?
FINAL NOTES :
While I used "t'as" instead of "tu as" , the way I translated the questions still feels a bit formal. The structure "quel est ..." is perfectly fine and pretty, yet in real life there's zero chance I'll be using that in an informal setting.
If anyone wants to try and answer those questions in French, tag me and I can correct your answers !

Can you recommend some french podcasts? :-)
absolutely! i love french podcasts and they are a great way to practice listening and learn new words. Spotify has a feature with the transcript for a lot of podcasts so that helps.
First, I'd like to recommend Easy French: Learn French through authentic conversations. This podcast is great because they discuss different topics.
Tumblr media
Next, you can check out Little Talk in Slow French. She talks slowly but it's still enjoyable to listen to. This podcast's topics are mainly about history, the world and the environment. She has very clear pronunciation too.
Tumblr media
Another great podcast is Le français avec Fluidité. He doesn't speak too quickly and he has free transcripts. You can just check out the discription on Spotify for the link. Il parle principalement des aspects culturels français. He mainly talks about French cultural aspects. However, he discusses other topics too.
Tumblr media
For news, this podcast est formidable. Il s'appelle News in Slow French. It's great for learning more advanced words and staying updated with what's going on around the world.
Tumblr media
Another great podcast for news is Journal en français facile. They speak faster so it's a good option for more natural French listening practice. Ils publient un épisode quotidiennement. They upload an episode daily.
Tumblr media
This one is called Real Life French and each episode is quite short and they speak at a normal pace. They discuss a variety of topics and it's quite nice!
Tumblr media
I really like this one. She speaks slowly and has a great accent that's easy to understand. It's called La Chronique. You can find the transcripts in the link in the discription. I personally like the topics she discusses. Je vous le recommande.
Tumblr media
Lastly, I would like to recommend Dear Diary by Candice Margaux. There's a transcipt already within the Spotify app. Like the name states, it's someone's audio diary. I like podcasts like these because they feel authentic and not as planned.
Tumblr media
And that's it! Hope this helps and that you enjoy these. Please feel free to send any questions.

learning non-european languages is only difficult cuz there's so little info outside of schools and textbooks. except for Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean. they get special treatment. where are all the Burmese instructors online? or the lengthy explanations of Vietnamese idioms? or the videos explaining Kerala verse and rhyme? we need more sub-saharan african and non-east asian language learning material online damnit.

❁ My favourite French podcasts for intermediate and advanced learners (B1-C1) ❁
(I really love using podcasts for language immersion and I owe a huge amount of my french progress to these, so I hope they’re helpful to someone else too!)
1.
This one is hugely popular, and for a good reason! I would credit this podcast (and the free transcriptions) with about half of my progress from intermediate to advanced. A really great feature is translations/explanations for difficult words in the transcription.
2.
I love the topics in this one, it’s very unique and thought-provoking (and often philosophical) while also not being too difficult. (I believe that all of the interview episodes come with transcripts also)
3.
Transcripts also available for free! I like the conversational style and there’s a huge range of important topics relating to french culture, social issues, travel etc.
4.
I feel like everyone knows this one? But I love it, it’s really fun
5.
Maybe a little easier than the others mentioned as she speaks quite slowly, but again a huge range of topics and clear explanations of grammar and vocabulary!
6.
Very interesting topics, especially the history episodes
7.
I think everyone knows her YouTube channel, but her podcast is really great too!
8.
Probably the easiest one on the list!
9.
This is actually aimed at natives so I put it last, but it’s perfect for anyone with an advanced level who is interested in language learning :)
