Chapter eight - Make the Most of It

“By the way, there’s um… something I meant to tell you.” “Yeah?” Isak frowned, partly out of frustration not to feel Even’s lips on his skin anymore, and partly worried about what he had to tell him that apparently couldn’t wait. “I’m going back to Oslo soon.” “Oh.” Isak’s voice came out too high and slightly broken with shock. He cleared his throat. “For how long?” “I’m not sure.” Even nervously bit his bottom lip while Isak waited for him to elaborate. “A week, maybe more?”

Beneath the Aurora

A cabin in the mountains in the middle of a cold, January night. Everyone has gone to bed, except for Isak. Standing outside on his own, he looks up at the stars, waiting for the aurora to light up the sky.

T’is the season for the SKAM December Festival 🎄 And I get to go first 🥲

For the prompt Christmas Office Party:

It’s so not his thing; a corporate Christmas party. And it’s not like he didn’t try to get out of it, he really did, but he’s the new hire and was led to understand it’d be wise to go. The company took a chance on him straight out of uni, the least he can do is show up to the Christmas party. Smile, have a drink, enjoy a free dinner at a fancy hotel.

So, with another little foggy exhale, Isak walks up the few steps to the entrance. Ducks under the piney-fragrant fir arch and heads inside.

"You okay?" Even asked, pulling him out of his torpor. "We don’t have to do it, you know. I mean I don’t expect anything if you don’t– First time’s a big deal so I get it if you wanna wait, or do it with someo–" "No, I want to!" Isak rushed to reassure him, unable to believe Even could have taken his silence for anything other than the briefest nerves. He kissed his lips tenderly, then with a little more heat. “I want to. With you. I trust you.” I think I’m in love with you.

Sorry, to just jump into your ask box (and anonymously, too) but I am wondering if you have some thoughts on how to deal with reactions to your work on ao3.

I don't even mean negative comments, more the feeling I get that people just want to read the same cliches and tropes over and over and don't really care all that much for a detailed, well planned story and are just waiting for the smut.

Basically I am curious how you keep yourself motivated to post when reactions are kinda frustrating (in your opinion) (it is mostly just the same one or two users that are like that, so maybe I should just block them haha)

Don’t worry, I really don’t mind that you’ve reached out to me here :) 

I get what you mean, I’ve never received really negative comments either, but some readers have made me feel that they weren’t getting what they wanted from my story, or that they didn’t agree with some aspects of it. And frankly, it can be really demotivating and even hurtful but above all, it’s honestly very rude. Because we publish these fics as a gift to readers, just for the sake of sharing something that we all love.

Of course we can’t satisfy everybody but if someone is not happy with what they get from your story, that’s their issue, not yours. Your readers are lucky that you’ve decided to share your creativity, your original ideas and your sensitivity with them, and I’m sure most of them know that and feel grateful for it.

And if the same couple of people keep making you feel discouraged, you should absolutely block them. This is your own private space where no one should make you feel uncomfortable.

It’s not easy to not take these reactions to heart. What’s helped me the most has been to find people in this community I can share these doubts and frustrations with, who support me and remind me of the value of my writing. So I’m glad you reached out, and I’m here if you want to talk again.
