First Impressions Are Important

Context: We started a new homebrew campaign where we didn’t share anything about our characters with each other. Two of my friends and myself were the good guys, another friend was DM and one more was the bad guy. Within the first ten minutes we were all in a fight in a tavern, and the bad guy, a half Orc fighter assassin, sustained a chunk of damage and took my cursed monk, who is the only healer, hostage as a human shield.

Orc: Heal me and help me escape or I’ll snap your neck!

Me: Okay I’ll heal you.

Orc: Really?? Just like that?

Me: Sure, as a cursed monk I can heal you up right good.

DM: Okay, roll it… (He knew where I was going with this…)

Me: *sucessful roll for healing*

DM: Nice, roll for damage.

Orc: Wait what

Me: I’m a cursed monk. Anytime I use my ki for a spell, it will do the opposite, like if I try to jump higher I’ll actually get heavier. *I roll moderately high for damage, but it was enough*

DM: So a bruised purple light emanates from the monk’s hands as he touches the Orc’s arm, and as the smell of burning and decaying flesh emanates through the air, the Orc melts like the guys at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, leaving nothing but a pile of gear and bones in a puddle of fleshy goo.

The party sat there with their mouths open in shock.

Me: Good first session, yeah?

Roll for Daddy

To provide context, the party Rogue used to be an assassin for his father who did a bunch of shady stuff. I recently had an assassin go after an NPC Party Member and when they defeated him, he asked for a private conversation with the Rogue. Rogue: What do you want? Assassin: Huh… the rumors are true. Rogue: What rumors? Who are you working for? Assassin: The rumors about who’s sticking their nose where it doesn’t belong. Daddy says hi~

Later

Fighter: So what’d the assassin say? Rogue: He just wanted to talk shit. He said something about “daddy says hi.” Sorceress: Who’s ‘daddy’? Rogue: I dunno! It could be a lot of people! DM: Roll for Bluff. Rogue rolls a 22. Nobody else in the party beats it with Sense Motive. DM: He has definitely worked for several people who go by “Daddy”
