The Selling Proposition
Tumblr media
SkillSire says if you expect to win a good job, you need a selling proposition, which is a brief statement of the contributions you can make that will stimulate an employer to hire you. CEOs may not start by thinking first about what potential employers need, but that’s what any hiring decision will be based on.
For a better chance of success in your search for a great opportunity, do the following recommendation from SkillSire:
Figure Out Your “Selling Proposition”
Start by identifying the needs and opportunities faced by employers most likely to hire you.  Then think about how you’ve met similar challenges in the past and received good results.  Next, craft a brief statement that gets right to the point.
It should state the benefits you’ll bring, the specific challenges you’ll meet, and why the approaches you’ve used in the past, and your particular blend of skills and strengths, make you an ideal executive candidate.
Build a “Communication Strategy”
Your next step is a communication strategy.  Do you have any liabilities? A good communication strategy will first get across how you’ll contribute.  But, the strategy also needs to neutralize or even turn to an advantage any liabilities.
Tumblr media
Liabilities range from gaps in employment and a “peaked career,” to terminations, poor performance of past employers and lack of major achievements, to age, unemployment and many more.
Prepare a “30-second commercial”
So much depends on the first minute of any interview. You will make an even better initial impression if you have prepared a 30-second statement that lets a CEO or CFO know how and where you expect to contribute, and why you’re well qualified to do so.
Learn to be a Story Teller
The ability to back up your claims with action-oriented stories about the challenges you’ve faced, the precise actions you took, and the results you achieved will be a tremendous asset in your search. Prepare half a dozen stories, which show you’ve effectively handled problems and opportunities the employer faces today, they will remember the stories long after the interview ends. And because the stories are precise, they keep you from overstating or understating your case, which employers appreciate.
Having these tools in you bag will give you the edge you need to be at the top of the list. For a competitive market where you seek a higher salary, you have to do more than simply relying on your resume and references to take care of business for you in your search.

4 Myths Americans Believe About Vietnam
Here are the list of 4 Myths compiled by vietnamfacts.com about what Americans Believe About Vietnam
1. Religion isn't tolerated in Vietnam.
Quite the contrary! Occasionally I browse stories on the internet about religious persecution in Vietnam, but what I see here in Ho Chi Minh City is very spiritual people, a lot more spiritual in general than Americans. Folks here will almost all say they are Catholic or Buddhist; it is tough to find anyone who would call themselves Agnostic or Atheist- I have not met one yet.
The Catholic Church is among the largest property owners in Ho Chi Minh City. There are huge churches. I can see a humongous church being built at the space from the window where I am sitting right now. In the evenings and on Sundays there are crowds of people at all the churches, often spilling out into the road and adding to the traffic mayhem. The most popular tourist attraction in Saigon is a cathedral- the Notre-Dame Cathedral in District 1.
Additionally, there are Buddhist temples in every area; many of them are enormous. Thich Nhat Hanh, the rock star of Buddhist monks who were living in exile in France for several years, recently returned to tour Vietnam with an entourage of over 300 monks.
Tumblr media
Granted, there are conflicts between the Vietnamese government and a few religious leaders that participate in politics. I really don't know the specifics of these conflicts but I would venture to say they involve only a very small minority of religious men and women. Previously, certainly there's been severe religious persecution in Vietnam, but things have changed a lot. The official government line is that faith is completely free and available to all, and that I have not seen anything different.
2. The Vietnamese hate Americans because of "The American War."
My own experience is just from the south, and it can differ in the north, but what I've experienced would really be the opposite. When I first came to Vietnam as a tourist in 1996, I never felt or heard anything but enormous love and respect for America and Americans.
To the Vietnamese, just like to individuals in developing nations everywhere, American is the promised land, the land of opportunity. Virtually every Vietnamese family has at least one member residing in the united states, therefore America is the nation that's taking care of their nearest and dearest.
Unlike Americans, especially baby boomers, who will not get past the Vietnam war, the Vietnamese have gotten over it. The majority of the Vietnamese population, it is own baby boom, is just in their mid-20's. Their parents have tales but most individuals are too young to recall the war.
Also consider history. Americans don't have a great deal of history, but the Vietnamese collective memory goes back 5000 years. The Chinese occupied Vietnam for 1000 years. France occupied Vietnam for 100 years. America was here for a lot of 30 years, only a little blip in Vietnamese history. Unlike Americans' sense of self-importance, the American incident is not all that significant. (I don't know how true those figures are; these are the amounts that Vietnamese people will recite if you inquire.)
This is a topic that's large enough for its article, but suffice it to say I've noticed far more tension between the north and south of Vietnam and involving local Vietnamese and overseas Vietnamese, than between Vietnamese and Americans. (My personal plea to Americans: get over it!)
3. They are all Communists.
I cringe when I hear Americans refer to the Vietnamese as"these commies," like everybody was running around in blue suits. Vietnamese individuals are just like everybody else: most of them could not care less about politics. They simply need a good job, food on the table, and an iPhone. The majority of them will bitch about their government, if given a chance, just like Americans. The number of people that are actually at the Communist Party is a really tiny number, even smaller than the number of people in Vietnam's Cao Dai religion.

4. Vietnam does not have modern technology.
Out in the countryside, this is accurate. My wife's family just got power at their home a few months ago. They do not have running water. But in the cities it is different. I am typing on a computer which I purchased here in Ho Chi Minh City, with a broadband connection that's just exactly the same (as far as I can tell) as in America. My college classroom is wired using wifi and a projector; I must tell my students to close their notebooks and listen. I have heard there are a few schools which have those touchscreen interactive projectors, but I have not used one yet. I would brag about my contemporary cell phone but I can not afford one. My students can, however, and I am often envious of the gadgets. You will find electronic gadgets or purchase in my local computer store I can not even identify.
I have a buddy who works for the Vietnam office of a British architectural firm and he explained their counterparts in England were concerned that the Vietnamese employees may not have the ability to open the AutoCAD files they sent, since surely the Vietnamese must be using some ancient version. In actuality, due to the lax enforcement of copyright legislation, the reverse was true. The Vietnam office had the newest version, whereas the British office just had an old version! Since most of the newest software is almost free here in Vietnam, it is typical for people to have $20,000 worth of software onto their computers, or more.
