Coach Hedge is such a great character! The best comedic relief of The Lost Hero by a mile! I absolutely love him!
I want to state that he definitely plays favorites
I think that, for being their protector for much longer, he has such an obvious soft spot for Leo and Piper. A little bit for Jason too but he is much more protecting of the other two.
Especially Piper. He is a girls dad fr
He takes her by the hand like a little kid man that’s so cute

If you ever lost someone you know exactly what Leo’s talking about in the paragraph. Grief is like that. Like detaching a limb that was part of you. You move on, you go to work and do your duty, wakes up every day and remakes a routine, but you will always be incomplete now.
Someone will always be missing. You just learn how to leave in their absence.
Sorry, this Leo paragraph just made me feel the grief again, it hit close to home cause I know how he feels.
That’s why Festus destruction hurts so much.

I’m on a sprint read session through Riordanverse books, but I need to confess:
The Lost Hero has been very hard to read. I ran the 5 PJO book + Demigod Files in 2 weeks.
One book mostly cost me 2 to 3 days. I’ve been reading TLH for 5 days already and I’m not even at half.
It’s so slow compared to other books. It was like this the first time I read too. I never understood why.
Maybe it’s a bit hard TO ME (this is totally a personal opinion) because I have a hard time caring about the new characters.
The one who I like most is Jason, cause his POV has a bit of dry humor that I find appealing and his story is compelling. I also like how he leads the quest and his process to making decisions (even if he hesitates a lot in making those).
Jason is also the Mom Friend, and I’m a sucker for caring characters that act like Mom Bears and Older Brothers/Sisters.
Piper irritates me a bit in the book. I like her okay, but in this book she is a lil annoying with the whole traitor thing + her misshaped view of Jason and their relationship.
It’s interesting but also feels very rushed, especially from her side. I know that’s because she feels like she already knows him but still, there is almost zero building up to this couple. I don’t like how it was made.
There is angst in this pre-relationship Piper and Jason thing that I find cool, but it was so poorly executed and not properly explored that just makes room for disappointment.
I emphasize in Piper being the annoying part because Jason is more cautious of this particular situation than her. She sometimes demands things from him that he doesn’t own to her, even if it’s not on purpose ( most times only in her head, but I read her thoughts, so I know )
Leo’s PoV is plain sad. Depression, tragedy, grief and gut wrenching pain. I don’t understand how people say his POV is the best, it’s so sad.
I mean, Leo is a funny guy from other people’s POV, but in his? Saddest kid ever. He needs therapy asap. Traumatized kiddo on sight.
His POV depresses me so deeply I hardly find joy in reading him.
I don’t know. Maybe the TLH trio just isn’t for me. They hadn’t clicked to me back when the book released and they don’t click now, 10 years later still.
Just a reminder: this is not hate towards these characters okay? I love them, I just don’t enjoy them very much. There is a difference.
Anyway…
Can’t wait for SoN.

Reading The Lost Hero and, honestly, what an odd team.
Everyone is hiding something.
Jason is starting to remember who he is: a Roman demigod. I can excuse Jason at some extent, mostly cause he thought he was in enemy territory. Not really rationalizing but more gut feeling. Romans and Greeks don’t blend well, it’s an intrinsic value on him.
Still, he doesn’t talk with the other two about anything regarding him and his history.
Leo is also holding back information. Important info btw: his powers. He doesn’t revel his fire resistance power until he absolutely needs to. I know it’s because of trauma and the internal repulsion he has for them but looking at the mission logically, it was important they share what they could about their individual abilities.
And Piper. Piper is plain lying to everyone, that’s her main problem in Book One. She is hiding the dreams, the threats, the vital infos she has and her dad’s entire hostage situation from the team members.
It looks to me like, at least in TLH, this trio are good company to each other and they care about one another but they don’t fully trust each other.
There is no trust.
The trust is built throughout the book. They only form a respectable team in the very end.
It’s different from SON. Percy is ride or die for Frank and Hazel since day 1. Franks the same. The only one who holds info in that book from what I remember (it’s been a while) is Hazel.
My best guess is that, from what we know of Percy, he is extraordinarily good at judging character.
if Percy likes someone, they are most likely okay. If he has beef with someone, they probably suck.
He is truly the heart of Argo II.
Interesting dynamics we have here. It really shows how the TLH trio are very new to the whole magical world thing. They are newbies in their first mission, so they don’t really know what they are doing in terms of team unity. Construction very well done btw.
That’s why Jason is so important too. He is the leader because he is the only one with experience at that point. The mission doesn’t fail because he is leading.

The Lightning Thief is so unhinged from the perspective of the gods
The gods are already in a pretty dire situation even before finding out about Percy’s existence: Zeus and Poseidon are on the brink of a civil war, one of the most powerful weapons of the universe is missing, and no one has any idea what’s really going on.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, there is a new child of one of the big three
The first direct contact they have with Percy, the guy who could be the hero who either saves or dooms them, is him sending the decapitated head of Medusa to Olympus with a cart that says “With best wishes, Percy Jackson," and no added context whatsoever
The next thing they see, is him and Annabeth on a live stream on Hephaestus TV, where tehy escape from Hephaestus trap in the waterpark; video footage which ends with Percy turning around to stare directly into the camera, probably looking pissed as hell, and yelling: “Show’s over! Thank you! Good night!”
He then manages to enter and escape from the underworld practically unharmed
Wins a one-on-one battle against Ares
Returns the lightning bolt and the helm of darkness on the day of the summer solstice, and stops the war
And then…. he just dips
Like, he leaves camp half-blood at the end of that summer, despite the fact that the last big three kid got herself killed trying to get there, and just disappears for a whole ass year to go to school
Like that’s what I call “leaving an impression." Honestly, the best introduction they could have ever gotten to Percy.

percy would legit be one of the hardest ppl to get over if you had any type of feelings for that man
like swear you’d like be waiting for him to do smth bad or look ugly waiting for that ick and IT WOULD NEVER COMEEEE
like if you look at nico bro is SCRAPING THE BARREL for ANYTHING to dislike abt percy
percy smiles a little too bright nico has to turn away and mentally remind himself that percy was one of the last ppl to see his sister alive
rachel legit can’t like him so she probably just watches from afar and she’s chill anyway
if calypso found out percy planted that little flower she gave him and subsequently learned he liked planting and kept that flower alive in her memory??? ITD BE WRAPSSSSSSS
like percy is legit just such a good person that anytime someone has a crush on him 🙏🏼 thoughts and prayers bc that crush is haunting you for the rest of your life
ik moving to new rome is gonna kick start that too bc i feel like chb everyone’s gotten used to him yk everyone’s like “sigh there’s percy and his beautiful face and nice laugh and good morals and self sacrificing ways sigh annabeth sure is lucky love those two together tbh”
but now they’re being introduced to all these new ppl who have to learn that percy is simply percy and bro is wifed up

Annabeth and Jason’s backstory’s are 100% mirrors of each other’s and I wish they did more with that.
Like Jason’s backstory is supposed to be a foil of Percy’s (Jason is what would’ve happened to Percy if Sally just dropped him off at camp or if he became a year rounder), but it ends up being incredibly similar to Annabeth’s
Both Jason and Annabeth were neglected by their mortal parent, both were at their respective camps way younger than normal, they both are essentially leaders of their camps, and they even share the same older sister
But where Annabeth wanted nothing more than a call to adventure it was thrust upon Jason, where Annabeth’s fatal flaw is hubris, overconfidence, Jason’s is the tendency to deliberate, under-confidence. There’s just so much you can do with them

one of my favorite subtle implications in the series is that it seems the Titan Army was fully banking on Percy being the host of Kronos. Why else would they make their main base a cruise ship if their primary enemy is a son of Poseidon? Named after Andromeda, the wife of Perseus? Why would they work on Oceanus specifically being free so much? Side notably with other children of Poseidon? Why plant Zeus and Hades' items of power on Percy when Luke already had them? Why only Zeus and Hades' items, not Poseidon's? Well because they really need Percy as Kronos' host, that's why. (and Poseidon siding with them because of that would be a bonus as well)
I like to imagine Luke's cabin on the Princess Andromeda is fully decked out with like "WELCOME PERCY" and sea-themed sheets and everything and he hates it so much cause it's a constant reminder he failed and he was Kronos' second choice. Also then he gets his super special pegasus not even exactly stolen by Percy, but the pegasus willingly defects to be Percy's personal steed instead, which must just be insult to injury. Luke has immense one-sided beef with Percy and Percy has no idea.

Percy at ease

Percy calm, but a little on edge

Percy when mildly angry

Friendly reminder that Percy jackson - our beloved silly adorable seaweed brain - is absolutely terrifying. When he’s angry, when he’s scared, when he’s on edge - he’s not warm and fuzzy.
No other character gets that reaction from people. Jason (the sweetie) is perceived as calm and in control, nico (our favorite self-outcasted outcast) is perceived as solemn and creepy, reyna (girlboss queen slay) is perceived as confident and assertive, and annabeth (our girl) is perceived as fierce, clever, and formidable. They are all intimidating to an extent.
But not like Percy. No. Becasue even when he’s at ease, he’s described as wild and disobedient. And when he’s not at ease, even if just little bit, he’s perceived as powerful, dangerous, and scary. Someone who NOBODY wants to mess with. Nobody even questions his power. One look from him has literal gangs running the other way. One look from him has Leo so scared that he’s literally shaking, and feeling the same innate fright and alarm that he does when jason summons an ear-piercing, earth-shaking, deadly bolt of lighting.
like… HELLO??? can we all just sit on that for a moment?? good lord
One angry look from percy has people thinking one thing: Run.
Percy is, canonically, the character that people find the most frightening and intimidating.
And unless he’s in a good mood - which you better hope he is - the reality is that most of us would be completely terrified of him if we met him.

one of my favorite parts about Percy being Obviously Bi™ is he doesn't universally describe one gender as attractive. Like he doesn't just say all girls are cute and guys are just okay or whatever or vice versa. No, he has specific girls he finds pretty and specific guys he finds pretty, and he voices that opinion.
For example - Clarisse? Thalia? Meh. Even Silena, who is canonically very pretty, Percy is relatively neutral on. But Annabeth? Rachel? Calypso? 100%. And based on differences in descriptions like that we can tell when Percy is attracted to somebody versus isn't. He calls everybody else in Beckendorf's cabin ugly and then waxes poetic about how hot Beckendorf is specifically. He'll describe most guys as just "eh" with plain physical descriptors but every time he sees Luke he feels the need to specify that Luke is extremely hot while being very evil and how much he hates Luke's stupid very very pretty face. love that for you Percy. great work.

Worst days
Tw for Kakashi’s general (terrible) mental state, including hallucinations, slight body horror and blood.
I.

II.

III.

These are parts 1, 2 and 3 out of 5. You can probably already guess who the rest will be about.
Parts 4 and 5
I have kind of taken this project as sort of like three different art studies in one (color, lineart and Kakashi's character).
It is set on Kakashi's ANBU era, where he was most depressed (and hallucinations were definetly (a common occurance/happening)). He had lost everything and everyone during this stage of his life, which is why I wanted to explore his feelings about every person he lost and how their deaths affected him.
More details about each part that you may have not noticed:
Sakumo:
Kakashi’s face is not fully visible, only Sakumo's.
At the end when he talks about the blood he refers to the floor as "wooden", but he's n the bathroom, actually standing on a tile floor, meaning he's hallucinating that he's in his old house right where he found his father.
Minato and Kushina:
They are both intentionally blurry, because Kakashi was not involved in their deaths in any way at all, unlike the other ones. He never saw them die. He just learned that they were gone.
This is also why he can’t reach them. No matter how much he runs he could not get there in time to save them, just like his sensei. He can’t go back into the past, either, so he just lost them without saying goodbye, only seeing what they left behind.
Minato is on his back in that one panel to represent the emotional distance between him and Kakashi. In canon Minato always seemed to keep a formal sort of work-oriented relationship with his team, because even though he seemed warm he was actually quite far, and he never opened up about himself at all.
Kushina's voice is simply "loud and vibrant", simply energetic, but I chose to make its connotation ambiguous because we never saw her and Kakashi interact in canon and so don’t know how their relationship was like.
In the last panel Kakashi's hand is monster-like, kind of like a certain seven-tailed beast in that one scene, which represents how he believes his influence would horribly corrupt Naruto.
Kakashi:
The color palette on the whole comic is monochromatic except for the blood and Kakashi's sharingan, representing how colorless his life was before he had his precious people with him, especially Obito.
This is the first time Kakashi's face is visible.
The focus on the "white fang" blade also works as a reminder of what will eventually happen if he breaks.

headcanon that grover and percy are just completely incapable of arguing. might as well be canon too, cause like everytime in the books there's some conflict, it just goes like this:
percy: *narrating* i am so annoyed at grover. i am literally shaking with anger right now. I don't wanna talk to him 😠
grover: *sad brown eyes* sorry, percy 🥺
percy: .....
percy: what are you SAYING, it's all MY fault for getting mad 🥺 what is WRONG with me i'm so stupid please give me a hug 😭 you did nothing wrong ❤️
