My first thoughts on Joker 2019 (with big ol spoilers):
First of all, I’m not really treating this movie as part of the DC universe. Obviously it is, it’s got the logo and everything but, it feels like so much MORE than just a comic book movie (not saying comic movies are bad, my whole tumblr is about comics). I’ve grown to accept that DC has a...questionable track record; they have major hits followed by major flops. But this movie, this movie right here, it’s ART. Sound a bit extreme I know but...my god...I went through the five stages of fucking grief. Joaquin Phoenix manages to be both eerie and puppy dog-like at the same time. There’s this naive innocence to Arthur, he doesn’t get social queues and what he finds funny others find morbid. This Joker is unique in that even after the “its time for me to dye my hair green and slap on a garish suit” scene, he’s still unsure of himself, still worried he’s gonna fuck up his jokes etc. He doesn’t entirely get this confidence boost that all the other Joker incarnations have (aside from lego j maybe) after they wack on the makeup. A part of him is still Arthur - yet a heightened, unhinged Arthur and its fascinating, and refreshing, and just wonderful.
Right now the boring bit is out of the way, let’s talk about the trivial things i liked in Joker 2019:
Arthur’s big ol clown shoes
Thomas being the ass that he is
Arthur having an actually unique backstory that isn’t the recycled ‘all it takes is one bad day’ trope
the way they handled the iconic alleyway scene (pearls and all)
Keeping Bruce a kid - it would have been so dull if they had introduced a Batman
Arthur’s “we live in a society” monologue
That SUIT
No purple suit (i love the classic purple but i think the red/orange look was more affective)
The homage to Taxi Driver and King of Comedy
Robert motherfucking De Niro
ALFRED
The ambiguity of what happened to Sophie + the Sophie twist
Arthur got the moves
Just all of the final act, just, you guys...it’s so perfect
And finally, my god, that scissor scene + fridge scene was hauntingly twisted and fabulous
(this is just my initially reaction to the film, my thoughts will probably change over time)
