Kabru expected to walk into the castle of a scheming king and instead walked into a five person flat, face first into a man armed with a rice cooker and a dream
Kabru trying his usual approach to undermining people against Laios is so funny. It’s like he’s a grandmaster at chess, poker, and everything else that requires mind-games coming up to a guy, fully expecting to beat him at any game under any circumstances, only to realize he didn’t prepare for the one thing he’d actually be faced with, which is a hotdog eating contest against a guy whose friends call him “the vacuum cleaner”.

I have to reblog this with a comment because my mum bamboozled my bio dad in a mind game of chess to make sure he didn’t name me anything stupid.
Basically, my dad tried to do two things; first off was my first name. When the topic of names came up, mum said “okay how about this, if it’s a boy, you can name it, and if it’s a girl, I will”
Now my bio dad is for lack of a better word, traditional, and that sounded good to him. He also decided he was going to call me Jack Daniels.
Yknow, the fucking whisky? Yeah.
Thing is that mother dearest had already won; she’d already been told by the drs at that time that I was gonna be a girl.
Round one goes to mum.
Now my parents (and soon to be step parent) worked in the same office, different departments, but their work mates were the same circle.
At some point, my dad fessed up that he’d said that if their workmate Claire paid him, he’d name me after her, which was not part of the deal. So mum went to her and said fuck it, you can have her middle name for free.
And now I’m in her will I guess? She’s cool.
So mum named me end to end, and dad didn’t get a lick in. And I’m very okay with that.
i'll go first my parents almost named me felicity. which would've been so cool but i definitely would've been like 5x crazier if i was named that

How do I contact Dungeon Meshi mangaka Ryoko Kui empatheticly and communicate using vibes alone that their work has healed years of indigenous colonial based trauma in my heart and mind?
I think they should know.

This is one of the reasons i absolutely fell in love with dunmeshi because it easily portrays a thing I’ve been trying to explain about being indigenous for ages.
So I’m tangata whenua Māori, indigenous to New Zealand. Our globally accepted collective proper noun is, as above, Māori, but that’s not a traditional proper noun at all, in fact the direct translation of the word is “normal”.
Now in Te Ao Māori we - and please note I’m simplifying it - seperate ourselves into Iwi, Hapu, Marae and others, largely based on physical area. We didn’t really consider ourselves a collective at all, and if you wanted to really get into it, we would extend this idea to the rest of the Pacific islands - they were simply other Iwi that lived on other parts of other islands.
Colonial settlers however decided nope, the islands that make up what we’re going to call New Zealand are all one ethnicity. Your Iwi and Hapu and all that are just tribes and families.
So, when they rocked up, to what they called New Zealand and said “so, what are you lot called then?” We effectively went “idk, normal??”
In the time between then and now, with further colonisation, Te Tiriti, the formation of government and then globalisation, we’ve had to fit in a bit more to keep up, and honestly take claim to the word Māori. But often when others ask us about being Māori you will almost always get a short disclaimer of “well, I don’t speak for all Māori, but we do things this way.”
All this to say; classifications are not as set in stone as you think - even things you might think are some sort of biological truth. Dungeon Meshi did an insanely good job of capturing this point without beating it to death trying to wax poetic - and all it did is call one group of people “tall men”

Thinking about how Kabru is presented as a foil to Laios narratively, but is actually, in the meta, a complimentary character - all the framing leading up to the two finally meeting leans on all the visual and literary tropes used to signal an opposite, a foil, a nemesis, but when you actually READ what is happening beyond the flavouring they’re more like mirrors, and their story plays out in a very satisfying but somehow still surprising way.
My favourite creative bit, for lack of a better word, is using an opposing trope to sneak a plot point that would be other wise easily clocked for being a natural conclusion, past the reader’s like a sorta three kids in a trench coat bit. Apothecary Diaries did this too with the Lahan storyline it’s good shit.
