Just for fun, I thought I'd share some of the development sketches for 'the view from up there' as we slide into the last few days of sbcf!

From day one I had a strong impression of the Wizard as a lady who wears a buff as a headband. Not sure why. The Ranger has his roots in every aussie I knew at the ski hill where I used to work (mostly the bad moustache)

The last two are scribbles from in among my thumbnails, & are very slight/mild spoilers. Did I mention that among everything else, View is a comic about the weird line between high and low fantasy? It's a fun part of the comic imo.

What was your inspiration for The View From Up There? (Greatly enjoyed the comic, by the way!!)

I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

I think my inspiration came 50/50 from The Fantasy Genre and personally being in the mountains a lot. I'm a fantasy lover through and through so I always knew that'd be the genre, it was just a matter of what was happening within it. I thought about fantasy genre conventions and tropes and ways I could put a bit of a spin on them. I wanted to play around with it!

On the other side, I drew a lot of inspiration from mountaineering films/books or caving videos, plus my own bit of back-country skiing experience (I was also working a day job at a ski resort most of the time I was working on the comic lol). I live in the Rockies and spend a lot of my free time Out There, so I wanted to bring some of that to the comic. I could make a hiker's guide to View with all the spots that I mentally pulled as reference/insp lol.

Thinking about high altitude and mountain environments, and conventions of the Genre kinda came together in a perfect storm, and that gives us the view from up there!

a brief inspiration/reading list is: Into the Mind (a ski movie from the studio Sherpas Cinema) and the Earthsea books by Ursula K. LeGuin

Hi there! I saw your Shortbox comic and was interested since I love your art, but I saw it has a 13+ rating. I’m an adult lol, but sensitive to some content, so was curious what the rating was for?

Hi! I rated it 13 plus for like... mild fantasy peril, a brief depiction of frostbite on a person's hands (not nasty or especially bad), and at the end, a dead person. If you're concerned about anything specific feel free to send a DM and i'd be happy to clear anything up!

Will your comic be available anywhere after the short comics book fair? Not sure if I'll be able to get it due to money reasons but it looks so lovely!!!

I don't have any concrete plans as of now for what happens to View after the end of SBCF, but i'll definitely post here if I make it available afterwards!
