Happy mermay!

Been working on silly drawings for mermay, and now that they're close to done I of course think of something way more fun. I'm not starting over, but still need it out, so this is just rambles.

AU The Little Mermaid

Durge is Ariel Gortash is Eric Bhaal is Triton

Orin is Sebastian (really needs Triton's approval, artistic talent and I often see people compare her outfit to a lobster, and Sebastian pretty close to that) Raphael is Ursula

In this version, Bhaal's hatred of the humans is a lot stronger and he actively wants his people to hunt them if they come near the ocean. Durge is the favorite, of course, as they can sink entire ships alone. But during their latest ship-raid they suddenly find themselves unable to kill a certain handsome young man among the crew and ends up saving him instead.

Cue Durge being in love for the first time ever and bad at hiding it. Also doesn't understand it, tries to cope with attempts to destroy the statue of Gortash from the ship, but just can't do it. Now, Orin notices them acting weird and finds out about the statue and man, and IMMEDIATELY tells Bhaal. Bhaal banishes Durge until they finds a way to kill Gortash and make things right.

Gortash now has added "fear of ocean" to his growing list and will not come near it, so Durge has to seek out the Sea Devil Raphael in order for legs. Though Durge tells themselves it's in order to kill only and NOT because they want to see Gortash again, Raphael can see what's really going on and also opportunity. He says he will help and give Durge legs for days (3 to be exact), but if they fail to kill Gortash before the time is up, they belong to Raphael and has to help him kill Bhaal so he can get his trident and rule. Durge scoffs and say yes, because they definitely won't fail.

Cue silly hi-jinks as Durge and Gortash meet again and Durge fails to follow through again and again, while Gortash is happily wooing this beautiful savior of his. Orin still encourages them to kiss, because she thinks that if Durge fail to kill Gortash, they simply just won't come back to the ocean and maybe she can be the new favorite.

In the end they fall head over heels, Durge just can't kill him and thus ends up in Raphael's clutches. They end up indeed killing Bhaal, Raphael gets the trident and immediately grows huge as he declares war upon the world.

BUT cue Gortash having gotten over his fear of the ocean in order to save Durge, coming to the rescue by impaling Raphael with a boat. Durge and Gortash instead take the trident and sail off into the sunset together. Happy ending, at least for them. The world will not be prepared.

And that is all.

It might partly just be who he is. Personally if someone irl is as much of a bastard as him, I'd find them ugly too, regardless of how many beauty standards they meet. To me this doesn't extend to fictional characters, but for others it might. Also beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. No one is objectively hot.

I literally feel like i'm losing my mind every time someone calls Gortash ugly or objects to the "handsome" line

Like.... he's literally a handsome guy. He's not a classic hollywood looking guy, but he's a handsome guy in his late 40s. These beauty standards are so annoying, not everyone has to look like a model- in fact, i think he's more handsome because he doesn't. And even so, he lives up to a LOT of classic beauty standards- the basic male body model is ripped as hell (not a fan of that, dad bod Gortash is canon in my heart, but it IS in game), typical hollywood stubble, and a full head of hair. So what's the problem, really? He looks his age? He has cheeks? His haircut is a bit funky? He literally isn't ugly, some people are just way too used to a very narrow view of beauty.

I will defend this guy's design until I die. If he was one of you guys' irl actor blorbos (like Mads Mikkelsen) you'd all be praising his "unconventional" looks.

If anything you should be objecting to the "younger" part, not the "handsome" one.

If anything, they should have made him uglier.

Durge has been put in timeout. It has its ups and downs.

I'm no good at drawing backgrounds or people running (and Astarion's goofy run does NOT help), but I still really wanted to draw Durge on a "joyride" :D
