Realized mid drive the other day that I am part of the oft-quoted (in my old church circles) 80% attrition rate of young adult church-goers.
After high school, purportedly 80% of young adults who were previously faithful members stop attending church. I thought this figure probably had to do with kids no longer being forced by their parents plus a little "I don't have time" or simply losing the habit.
Disillusionment and deconstruction never really crossed my mind back then as a real reason. And potentially more the point that actually struck me, even though my journey (due to social distancing and a worldwide shutdown) included the fairly standard dwindling and infrequency to eventually nothing - it was both a conscious and unconscious choice.
I don't plan to go back. And I didn't at the time. And I started building a routine that just naturally left church out until here I am, years later, realizing I am one of the ones who no longer goes to church and it was never a direct reaction to the church, but an (in)direct result of other choices.

O
oh no it's me
autism culture is being so in tune to social cues that you would never consider you’re autistic until you find yourself having a meltdown because you couldn’t keep up with everyone cues.

If you (like me) want 3rd party candidates to be an actual viable option in USA elections so you no longer have to vote for Democrats OR Republicans as your first and only choice, then what we need is Ranked Choice Voting. In order for that to happen, we as voters have to do two things:
Vote Democrat this fall, because Republicans fucking hate Ranked Choice Voting, and in several Republican-run states they have outlawed it. So if you want it, you have to keep Democrats in power in your state.
Lobby for and then vote for Ranked-choice voting in your state! Many American states have already adopted Ranked Choice voting and several more are set to do so in 2024. The ball is literally already rolling on this, we just need YOU to help it along.

This is my comfort movie where I get to be jump-scared, laugh, get turned on, and cry because it's good for me.

The pandemic sourdough craze hit me about four years late, but seeing as how Emma Jean is the only creature I can keep alive besides myself, l'll be riding this train to the end.
This one came together fairly easily, it's moist enough without falling apart, and it's the right amount of sweet. And having real apples in it means it's basically nutrient dense; right?

Apple Fritter Bread from Living Bread Baker.
I didn't make any substantial changes to this recipe other than a few accidental glitches.

Exposure
I want to curl outward: to expose the raw, pulsing nerves, so tender, so afraid. I’m so tired of wanting to be seen and known and to see and know and embrace…So tired of fearing the pain that already exists. If I could persuade myself that it’s just painThat it’s not safe, not good, not easy, no liesBut that I’ve survived something much worse: the curling inwardThen maybeMaybe I could actually…

Making a Testimony
I was listening to the podcast Oh, No with Ross & Carrie and they were describing their voyage into Mormonism and what the conversion experience is like, how the church handles people, etc. Not a particularly unbiased view, but not wholly ungenerous. They end up going through the entire process, including baptism. After baptism, they’re given the chance to “share their testimony,” which, as…

What I Want to See
What I Want to See
We’ve all heard some variation on “Be the change you want to see in the world” (which is apparently a misquote of a longer passage, but inaccuracy has never stopped the human race before so…here we are). And hearing myself complain once again about how badly I want to see healthy romantic relationships portrayed in media, because no, fighting and conflict and heartbreak don’t have to be the only…

I see a lot of talk about how neurodivergence evolved and stayed in the gene pool because it was somehow ‘useful’ to our ancient ancestors. While I don’t necessarily disagree with this theory, I would like to propose an alternative. A theory that we already have physical evidence for. Humans just love each other and care for each other. Don’t you think that a species that cared for it’s people while they recovered from broken bones, or nursed their elderly well beyond their ‘usefulness’ would leave a member out because they didn’t make eye contact, or couldn’t stay focused on a particular task, or whatever other trait you associate with neurodivergence? I really don’t.
Sure, maybe it was useful to have someone around who didn’t mind making arrowheads all day, or who knew absolutely everything about all of the local flora and fauna, or who keyed in on every little distraction. At the end of the day, though, these people weren’t kept around because they were useful, they were cared for because they were loved.

“humanity is inherently selfish and bad” bbbrrrghuhjfkg. humanity is seeing a stranger’s grocery bag break open on the sidewalk and harvesting fruits and veggies from the branch-like cracks of the asphalt for them, just because you can. humanity is helping a lost child find their mother on a crowded beach, looking for the ladybug-patterned parasol with their hummingbird-small hand in yours. it’s an elder’s fingers wrapped around your arm as you help them up the stairs because the elevator is broken, and feeling like you’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing, like this is what you would’ve been doing had you been alive centuries or even millennia ago. there will always be a heavily pregnant woman who will smile at your when you give up your seat, a nice blind man in the fruit aisle who will ask you to please pick the riper plantain for him, a tired cashier whose face will light up when you compliment their tattoo sleeve. humanity is connection
