Flight of Icarus lore dump part 2:
Part 1 | Character List
- Wayne has a green thumb. He reads Gardenerā€™s Weekly magazine. It doesnā€™t say what he grows, but it says he buys vegetables from the store so Iā€™m going to say that gruff old man Wayne has the prettiest petunias in the whole trailer park.
- Eddie sneaks into the Hawk with his best friend Ronnie to watch action movies and thinks Snake Plissken, Han Solo and Conan the Barbarian are cool.
- Eddie talks for hours about the intricacies of Elven politics in Tolkien.
- Eddie read comics as a kid and hid them all over the house "like a little squirrel" under the bed, behind the nightstand, under the rug. Wayne found his Uncanny X-Men in the freezer between stacks of tv dinners. Also, "Hellfire Club" comes from these X-Men comics.
- Floor time! There's a part where Eddie is literally just lying on his back on his bedroom floor counting down from a million. When Wayne comes home, Eddie army crawls on his belly to the doorway to see him.
- Eddie reads Gormenghast paperbacks, gothic fantasy novels. It mentions that Wayne saved them from the house fire along with Eddieā€™s guitar. It never says how/when Eddie originally got his guitar.
- Eddie says lots of ccā€™s original songs have D&D references. It's implied that he writes them. One is called ā€œFire Shroudā€ after a spell
- Eddie is called Freak King at school and Munson Junior or just Junior around town and he hates all of it
- Eddie talks about having anxiety a lot and it's implied he has had panic attacks in the past
- Eddie is the lead singer and guitarist of cc. He started the band with Ronnie specifically because it was required to participate in the school talent show.
- Neither Wayne or Al graduated high school. When Eddie (temporarily) drops out, Al celebrates.
- Eddie doesn't cook. He doesn't even own a spatula. The smell of cooking in their house actually shocks him and gives him a deep longing for family meals, which Al uses to manipulate him
- Eddie jokes about being into Saturday Night Fever and strikes the pose a couple times.
- Eddie knows how to hotwire and how to pick locks. Al taught him this at the age of ten. Eddie is "disgusted" with himself any time he does either of those things.
- Eddie "drives like a monster" when he's upset about something.
- Eddie smokes cigarettes occasionally. Weed is mentioned a lot in the book but it never says anything about Eddie smoking it or doing any drugs. He either doesn't smoke much or he hasn't tried anything yet in the book. Also, heā€™s just now meeting Rick. But Itā€™s pretty clear after everything he went through why he would start
- There's lots of mentions of PBR and Bud Light. Though Eddie says he doesn't like to drink after his shifts at the Hideout (where he's a barback). He mostly drinks off-brand Big Buy soda in the book (he calls it "pop")
- Eddie's parents were married on March 12th, 1966. The date is inscribed on the bottle of their wedding wine. Eddie asks what kind it is and Al says they only had 'red or white' kind of money
- Al breaks out the wedding wine (to manipulate Eddie, you guessed it) it's red wine and Eddie really, really likes it
- Eddie went to War Zone with his dad for supplies for the truck heist (spike strips, coveralls, etc)
- Eddie's band played Exciter by Judas Priest at the talent show. The song was only approved because they emphasized the "priest"
- There was another (?) talent show in Winter of 1981 where Eddie's band played "Prowler" and they were kicked off stage halfway through because the song was considered Satanic, and the PTA visited all their parents for trying to convert everyone to Satanism.
- Eddie imagines hitting his dad twice. Once with a glass bottle and once with a metal wrench. (He should've- oops who said that)
- The only hug Eddie gets in the book is when his dad first comes back, Eddie knows it's the first step in his cycle of showing up, using Eddie and leaving, but Eddie still accepts the hug and feels guilty for enjoying it.
- It's implied Eddie gets close to tears a couple times in the book, but the only time they actually spring up is when his mom's favorite song (from Muddy Waters) comes on in the truck radio while Eddie is doing the heist with his dad and feeling awful about it. Eddie has several flashbacks of dancing with her to this song, it seems like his happiest memory that he always returns to.
- Whenever Eddie is doing what his dad wants (hotwiring, charming a person into their plans) he puts on what he calls his "best Al Munson smile" and he's terrified that it will eventually take over his whole face. There's a part at the end where Eddie is sitting in a jail cell and says "All I want to do is tear my face off. If a new one grows in it's place, maybe it'll make me a different person. Someone who isn't such a complete fuckup."

Flight of Icarus lore dump:
Part 2 | Character List
- Eddie is a barback at the Hideout (rundown bar) where his band plays sometimes. He doesnā€™t sell drugs until the end. At 18, he moves in permanently with Wayne and starts dealing to help with the bills.
- Lots of people in town call Eddie ā€œJuniorā€ for his likeness to his dad and he hates this. He calls himself Junior condescendingly when heā€™s doing something that lives up to his dadā€™s criminal reputation.
- Steddie writers, when Wayne is conveniently absent from the trailer, heā€™s not always at work. He goes to a bar called the Attic on Fridays with guys that Eddie considers nice and upstanding.
- Eddie lives alone in his dad's house, but throughout his life, heā€™d stay with Wayne when Al disappeared. The first time, Eddie was 8, he fell asleep by the window waiting while he was left for days with little food until Wayne got him. At the start of the book, Eddieā€™s 18 and has been there alone for months. Wayne checks on him and brings him food. But Eddie is stubbornly independent, since 3rd grade he thought he could take care of himself.
- Eddie likes metal, but also rock, Chicago blues, country and bluegrass bc of his mom. His dad taught him guitar, but he learned to love music through his mom (Elizabeth Munson neƩ Franklin), who passed when he was 6. He still listens to her records, mostly Muddy Waters. He has memories standing on her feet dancing to that record. It brings him to tears once.
- Eddieā€™s dad Al is charismatic, Eddie calls it Munson Magic but doesnā€™t think he has it. ā€œI inherited his hair, his van, and his guitar picks. But nobodyā€™s loving Eddie Munson on sight.ā€ Still, Eddieā€™s worst fear is being like his dad. Al only shows up to manipulate Eddie into helping him with schemes. Two of which get Eddie held at gunpoint twice and hit in the head with a shotgun. Al screws ppl over and gets their house burned down, with Eddieā€™s momā€™s records.

el and nancy's experiences of girlhood being dichotomised in season one kills me. el looks at the pretty girl and the pretty pink bedroom and this life she's crafted that she parades in pictures and she craves it, so deeply, that she spends the whole season wearing nancy's old dress, this hyper-feminine pink thing, peter pan collars and frills. it sits on her so jarringly, resolutely at odds with her shaved head and death stare and face permanently stained with dirt and blood and tears, and mike's crumpled blue jacket doesn't match, doesn't fit, and she looks so small, but she wants to be the girl in the picture. she wants back the innocence that she never got to have, scrounges off the scraps of nancy's girlhood where she can find it, while nancy loses it at the exact same time. she loses her virginity and her childhood best friend and she ties her hair back and learns to shoot a gun and she learns, through the pain and violence, that her life as a small-town good girl behind a picket fence was lost with everything else that went that day, died with barb. she's a slut and a monster hunter and a woman at sixteen and now she's looking at the girl in the picture and craving her life too. she left her girlhood by the poolside, torn and bloodied and ripped fresh from her chest, and el picks it up, dusts it off, and wears it like armour.

iā€™d like to preface this by saying i am not an expert on religion (or non-religion) this is simply information iā€™ve learned over the years of research and talking to those who do practice satanism. if iā€™ve got anything wrong feel free to correct me
with that being said, iā€™ve always had this idea that The Munson Doctrine followed the rules of the church of satan. be it the 9 satanic statements or the eleven satanic rules
Tumblr media Tumblr media
eddie has a laveyan cross patch on his vest so he must practice satanism to some extent. Especially since itā€™s a pretty large patch in an obvious place.
Tumblr media
itā€™s sort of complicated because itā€™s not really a religion but itā€™s still a practice. (one of personal freedom and rationalism.) itā€™s basically things he lives by to better himself and the way he interacts with others. the ā€œrulesā€ donā€™t need the approval of any deity because satanism rejects the idea of all gods. (it goes hand in hand with atheism) it simply encourages individuality, skepticism and living your life the way you want to no matter how ā€œsinfulā€ it may seem to others.
i think itā€™s safe to say eddie resonates with this. heā€™s seen blatantly rejecting and criticizing societal norms and questioning why he and his friends are seen as freaks and targeted because of their interests
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now hereā€™s where i start inferring things about how he practices
iā€™m sure heā€™s added to these rules (hence the name Munson Doctrine instead of a direct reference to the rules of the church of satan) but i think it still loosely follows those rules. eddie just seems like the sort of person whoā€™d take something like this and make it his own, which is essentially what satanism is. (again, itā€™s not a religion so it doesnā€™t require specific rituals to be done)
or, he misunderstood or interpreted some of the rules given to him differently than others mightā€™ve, which lead to the quote that started this whole rabbit hole iā€™ve fallen down.
Quote: ā€œI just couldnā€™t accept the fact that Steve Harrington was actually a good dude. ā€¦ No way man, NO WAY, that like, flies in the face of the laws of the universe, and my own personal Munson Doctrine.ā€
iā€™m leaning toward the idea that he added his own rules and beliefs to the list because satanism encourages freedom and self expression, so he can essentially do whatever heā€™d like with his practice as long as heā€™s not infringing on the rights of others. (again, this would explain the name Munson Doctrine)
he might have added things (such as bullies/bystanders never changing. i.e: steve harrington now being a good dude when, in eddieā€™s eyes, he wasnā€™t before) because of his own experiences with people like that. [read here for more on that]
regardless of what he mightā€™ve added or why, i do think that the Munson Doctrine is something he actively lives by. (ignoring the fact it could have just been a joke he threw in there to express his shock on how much his perception of steve had changed)
now hereā€™s the fun part. my head canon i built off of this head canon.
i like to think that eddie didnā€™t come up with the munson doctrine on his own. his mother mightā€™ve been a big influence in why he practices laveyan satanism.
now hereā€™s why i think that:
1. itā€™s obvious eddie has some sort of ill feelings about his father, going as far as to say he told himself he didnā€™t want to ā€œwind up like he didā€.
this could just be him referencing the fact his father has been incarcerated for various crimes or it could be him referring to his character as a whole including his religion
this ties into fact that we see Wayne (who we assume is Eddieā€™s fatherā€™s brother due to their last names) is actively religious ā€” at least enough to have religious decor around the trailer so itā€™s safe to say the munson brothers grew up religious
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. we know absolutely nothing about eddieā€™s mother which means i can make it all up !
eddie referring to his personal beliefs as his ā€œMunson Doctrineā€ could imply that heā€™s not the only munson who follows these rules. he does say itā€™s his ā€œpersonalā€ doctrine so i will choose to believe that is in reference to the new things heā€™s added as heā€™s grown up and experienced more things in his life
but before then, his mother could have instilled rules into him that he still follows to this day. rules such as these:
Tumblr media
i just love the idea that eddie still has some connection to his mother and this is just one of the ways he honors her, but the idea of eddie finding comfort in satanism later in his life due to feeling alienated by the people of Hawkins because heā€™s differentļæ¼ is just as good
in conclusion:
i choose to believe the munson doctrine wasnā€™t just a silly throw away line, and it ties into the religion he seems to practice
