i agree that most of season 3 was good, but there were some really bad episodes... could you do individual re-writes of bad episodes?

Sure! We could make them match the season better, fix most of the egregious problems, and use those episodes to set up our season 4.Please send s3 episodes you think need to be fixed! One suggestion: our s2 Rip Hunter had a lot of character growth, and so he either needs a lot more motivation fleshing out to explain his s3 behavior or he needs a decent excuse (possession? Some trauma? Something! Especially as to his interaction with Ava!)

Thoughts, everyone?

I was thinking - I’m not feeling an overwhelming urge to do a rewrite of season 3 of LoT. It has its flaws and a clunky beginning, but mostly it worked well enough for me.

But I might be tempted into a project of “how season 4 ought to be”. Mostly to be sure that the showrunners (who I strongly suspect of having read the rewrite, considering how many coincidental similarities there was) gets some good ideas…

(And also, if they haven’t already thought that far themselves, to be sure they realize that they can do a Fables crossover so very, very easily.)

Proposal: instead of yet another episode focusing on an abusive father figure, could we have Mick meeting his mother?

Uh, yes, definitely. There's clearly something going on here with all the family members they keep meeting (honestly, I'm amazed we haven't met a descendant yet, with the exception of the West-Allen cameo), so we can definitely do that.

Besides, the timing is right for us to do the big 1968 protest movement, which is infinitely more interesting than yet another Vietnam pastiche.

Do you guys mind ignoring the Rip getting arrested part?

Obviously nothing is set in stone yet, but in my view, it somewhat depends on how important canon makes it. If it's going to be a Whole Big Thing with multiple episode-long repercussions, it may be more difficult to avoid including some reference to it, though obviously we can feel free to fix it so that the circumstances are different or better or maybe that it's someone else getting arrested or even just veer off in a totally different direction or something - whatever fits the season arc we're planning. We certainly didn't mind totally ignoring vast swaths of last season!

Basically, if Rip getting arrest now ends up being a set up to an awesome heist episode involving him getting broken out of the Bureau or something, and we want to keep the latter, we have to keep the former. There's no way to tell until the season's done. :)

re: your idea about how to handle a rivalry between the Legends and the Bureau - not exactly on topic but can Sharpe's AI be named Gillian and be voiced by Gillian Anderson?

I certainly don’t see why NOT! 

(The only thing is, if we do that, there has to be a minimum of one (1) X-files joke (Hannibal and/or American God references accepted as valid substitutes), and a MINIMUM of one (1) scene in which Gillian and Gideon exchange quips while their ships fight. Because we can.)

Since I finally caught up with 3x03: if we also let Amaya have problems with her totem, can we a) let it be a problem longer than like one episode, and b) have Stein be the one who gets high with her, thereby making Jax second-hand high (and if we use Gary he can accidentally have some of that stuff too)? Because we're obviously keeping our sweet rewrite!Nate far away from the ship, so he doesn't run danger of being as useless as show!Nate!

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind bringing our Nate back, just to showcase how much better things can be with a not-awful version.

But I agree with you 100% - if you’re going to make a problem with the totem, it should be a longer term problem, and solving it should move the plot forward more than “recruit this character”. Maybe ALL the totems have a problem? Maybe they have to figure out what is causing all the totems to screw up? Maybe Mallus is going after the original totems, way back in history and they have to go visit ancient Africa to fix it, but to figure that out, they need multiple totem-holders! Who knows! There are options!

Though, to derail entirely (apologies) - what I would have liked (so far) is more of a balance between the Legends and the Bureau. We’ve been following the Legends for two season already - we know them, we like them, and it’s hard seeing them played as the fool every time even when we know it’s meant to be funny. They’re incompetent! Absolutely, totally incompetent! And that’s not our Legends. It would work much better if the Bureau had a different style, but not necessarily a better one - that would work the whole same competition angle, but be more respectful to characters we love.

You know how the recent James Bond movies have had a whole thing about “old in-person hand-in-hand approach” vs. “new, slick technology from-a-distance” thing? We could’ve had that! The Legends are messy, but they inspire. The Bureau is neat, but they don’t know how to deal when their plan goes wrong. The whole chainsaw/scapel thing? Take that and run with it! You wouldn’t use a scapel to cut down a door to save people inside a burning building - a scapel is not always the right way to go, the way the show keeps pretending it is. Thus far the Legends are only “allowed” to fix things because the Bureau doesn’t know about them fixing it, or because they fix it before the Bureau gets there, not because they can do the job the Bureau can’t.

Take the Freakshow episode. Let’s see how it COULD have gone:

The saber-toothed tiger anachronism was simple (a level 1); it could’ve been solved by either the Legends or the Bureau.

The Legends get there first, but the Bureau is right on their tails, and due to the clash between the two groups, things go wrong and the Bureau self-righteously kicks the Legends out, saying that they’ll handle it. The Legends are pissed about this, but reluctantly concede because they did, in fact, screw up with the tiger. 

However, when losing the tiger makes Barnum lose faith in his ability to keep a circus running, thereby changing history, that escalates the situation to a 4 - but the Bureau isn’t good at inspiring people to do things. They’re good at erasing things without being noticed, not fixing a mistake that’s already been set in place (say because erasing his memory won’t fix the emotional impact of what happened). The Bureau doesn’t know what to do to fix this. Reluctantly, and with their teeth gritted, they invite the Legends to take care of the issue.

The Legends get all smug and arrogant and go in to fix it their own special way…except because they got so cocky, they mess up.  Barnum sees their powers and catches them and it all goes wrong, and it escalates again.

The Bureau is SUPER mad and give the Legends an impossible deadline to meet, or else they’re just going to come and erase EVERYONE’S memory - they don’t care that it’ll damage the timeline in the long run, removing some wonder from the world, as long as it fixes the immediate problem.

The Legends object to this and quickly scramble to try to fix things, pulling out a squeaker of a victory (including the fight scene we had at the end with Amaya and Firestorm) just before the Bureau arrives.

Everything is fixed, Sara rubs that in Sharpe’s face, and Sharpe leaves, dissatisfied that she wasn’t able to finally catch the Legends in a serious error.

What’s wrong with that? It puts the two teams on even footing, it gives the Legends both the respect they deserve for everything they’ve done AND gives the Legends a reason to screw up so badly (because of the situation, they’re made to be cocky and over-confident, leading to error), and you still have the Bureau all snobby and condescending. Seriously, is there anything the episode gave us that wouldn’t have been equally covered by this approach? Come on!

Hey! First, I love the idea of having Jesse Quick on the team. Besides that I would also like to suggest Mon-El, or any of the Supergirl characters - I'd love to see them crossover more.

I think having someone from a different dimension, as opposed to merely a different time period, would be quite interesting! Sadly, I don't watch Supergirl myself, but anyone who does should definitely keep an eye out to see if there's anyone else we might be able to steal - again, either for the season or maybe for a short 2-3 episode arc.

Maybe Rip works with the bureau and the legends team like part time. The team aren’t time experts (yet) so every once in a while Rip joins the team on a mission. I like that! I would actually be really into a Rip who runs the bureau and sometimes sneaks away for a proper mission with his old crew - I always love it when characters are all “yes, yes, I’m very straitlaced now, very formal, look how professional I am now…oh, look, a distraction! *run off to go cause havoc with friends*”

It would also appease my sense of “goddamnit you have phones use them” if even in the episodes Rip doesn’t appear, every once in a while they call him for advice with hilarious interactions - you know, the way they did Sophie on Leverage for the season she wasn’t there? Like with the leader going “we don’t need their help” and everyone going “yes yes we do *call in secret*”. That would be fun - and having Rip loudly whisper “PUT THE TIGER BACK!” and then have to hide his phone because he’s supposed to be teaching a class in five minutes and he can’t be yelling about tigers or something.

We’ll have to see if the showrunners have anything specific planned for Rip this season, but I think there’s a lot of potential!

One, everyone can add songs, and they should because I wasn’t here for like, 7 episodes during our final recaps, so I have no song suggestions for those episodes. Sorry I just really like Rip and feel like he still cares about the legends and hate seeing people call him a douche

Totally fair! From what I’ve seen in the first episode, he does seem to be acting as though he’s embarrassed of the Legends, rather than proud of them. Mind you, being embarrassed of them doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about them - family is often embarrassing but you love them anyway - but his appearance in episode seemed to be being used by the writers to spur the season plot/create the minor antagonist rather than necessarily being how he would react after spending the better part of two season with the Legends.  

Do you have any specific suggestions for how you would want the first episode of season 3 altered? We can try our best to keep “more Rip as time dad” in mind as we plot, but everyone has different definitions of what “time dad" behavior is. I’d love to know what you think would be the ideal way to reshape s3e1 - maybe some way we could keep Rip with the team a little longer? Or do we want to move him to be their inside man in the bureau? or something else entirely?

For the season 3 rewrite can Jesse Quick join the team? I feel like she would fit in the geek squad with Nate and Ray. Mick’s reaction would be “oh great. There’s another one”

Oooooh, interesting! I guess we’ll have to see where the season leads us, but that’s definitely a good option - either for a short arc or for a longer stay!

For the season three rewrite can we please have more rip acting like a time dad

Well, he does seem to have a whole new Bureau of children as well :) I don’t see why we can’t try to get Rip to take more of a (properly) worried but caring parent approach to the Legends’ shenanigans than what he appears to be taking in the show!
