Ya Yumma Fe Dagga A’babna - يا يمه في دقة ع بابنا
Based on a true story from 1973, "Oh mother, there is a knock on our door" opens to a song written by renowned Palestinian folk singer Abu Arab, who wrote the lyrics after meeting "Bilal", who told him his story of sneaking back into his village after having been exiled for 5 years.
"Bilal" was the nickname given to a Palestinian freedom fighter from the town of Beit Fajjar south of Bethlehem, who took part in launching attacks against the Israeli occupation forces and was later exiled to Lebanon as a result. During this time, his family was informed that Bilal was killed during the Battle of the Beaufort in southern Lebanon.
Unbeknownst to Bilal’s family, the news about his death was not true. 5 years later, Bilal was able to sneak back into Palestine and into his town. According to him, he really wanted to see his mother. During the night, he knocked on the front door of his family’s house, a knock to which his mother responded asking who it was. "I am your son", Bilal replied. In response, Bilal’s mother yelled out "my son was martyred in Lebanon. Leave!" The mother was under the impression that this was an Israeli soldier trying to trick her into admitting to communicating with or aiding freedom fighters.
Bilal then ran to one of the neighbours and explained what happened. The neighbours visited the mother and she agreed to meet her son finally. According to Bilal, when his mother saw him, she embraced and kissed his rifle before  embracing and kissing him.
Years later, Bilal met with Abu Arab who upon hearing Bilal’s story, wrote the below lyrics
يا يمه في دقه ع بابنا يا يمه هاي دقة أحبابنا يا يمه هاي دقة قوية يا يمه دقة فدائية
Which translate to:
Oh mother, there is a knock on the door A knock resembling that of our loved ones Oh mother, it is a heavy knock A knock resembling that of a freedom fighter
These opening lines were later built on and turned into the infamous song we know today. The most famous version of the song is of course the one sung by the songwriter himself, Abu Arab. The song, however, has since been popularised and sung by different artists, most notably Palestinain band El-Funoun, Hamza Namira and of course Sanaa Moussa.
The song carries a lot of significance in Palestinian culture but especially with families of prisoners in Israeli prisons or those whose loved ones have been exiled or forced out of their land and into refugee camps away from their families. The song invokes a sense of hope, that one day these families will hear a familiar knock on their door, too. It instills a sense of faith and promise to these families that they will also be able to embrace their loved ones again.
More songs are shelved at my (humble but growing) Palestine folk music library.

Nablus: Illuminated by the Sun (2011) Palestinian Artist SAMIRA BADRAN
An homage by the artist to her father Jamal Badran who was a master of the Islamic arts and calligraphy in Palestine. The installation was placed in Jadet Badran, Onion Market, Nablus. Inspired by her father’s work, Samira created these patterns and calligraphed a poem by Palestinian poet Waleed al-Keilani.
