Gen 1's edge was fitting for its time because it was a popular thing for kids to like edgy stuff. However, that edge was a product of its time, especially since we've all grown out of the age that the series is supposed to be targeted at.

Gens 2 and 3 don't have as much of an edge because it obviously didn't need to keep Gen 1's vibe.

Gen 2 kinda used it and changed things up, but it was still a completely separate Gen in and of itself. Gen 3 is literally made to market towards kids in the 2020s, so it obviously won't have the same vibe that Gen 1 had because we've all grown out of its target audience.

If you miss/prefer Gen 1's edginess, fine. You do you! Just don't be rude to people who prefer Gen 3's vibe all because it doesn't have that type of edge anymore.

Besides...Gen 1's edge was mainly routed in racially charged stereotypes, whether it's obvious or not. Gen 3 obviously has issues with stereotypes involving Lagoona, but not really anything else is as bad as it was in Gen 1.

EDIT: A great example of plotpoints in Gen 1 that would not fit well for today's standards would involve Wydowna Spider.

She gets arrested after being trafficked by a teacher and being forced to stay in Monster High's basement. She's also treated as a slave who worships her teacher in a very uncomfortable manner.

As far as I know, no black girl would want to see Wydowna's story over Gen 3 Clawdeen's, being an Afro-Latina who feels happy accepting her heritage as half werewolf. Sure, Wydowna's story is uncomfortably realistic, but by no means something to make little black girls read a book about if you want to make a story about accepting minorities.
