The Devonshire House Ball of 1897 was a celebratory and opulous dress ball held by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire on the 2nd of July at Devonshire House in Piccadilly for Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. The Queen did not attend but many members of the British Royal Family came, with the Prince of Wales remarking that the fête was a success.

Alexandra of Denmark, the Princess of Wales as Queen Marguerite de Valois with Hon. Louvima Knollys (daughter of Viscount Knollys) as her page;

GD Michael Mikhailovich of Russia as Henry IV of France and his wife Countess Sophie Nikolaievna of Merenberg, Countess de Torby as Gabrielle d'Estrées;

Countess Louisa Cavendish of Alten, Duchess of Devonshire as Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra;

Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, Duchess of Teck as her ancestress Princess Sophia of Hanover;

Mary “Minnie” Paran Stevens, Lady Paget as Cleopatra;

Mary Theresa Olivia Cornwallis-West, Princess Daisy of Pless as Cleopatra;

Constance Gwladys Robinson, Countess de Grey, later Marchioness of Ripon as Cleopatra, with her ‘Nubian Attendant’;

Jennie Jerome, Lady Randolph Churchill as Empress Theodora; and,

Prince Carl of Denmark, his wife Princess Maud of Wales, and her sister Princess Victoria of Wales as members of the court of Marguerite de Valois.
