I don't know if this idea already exists (because I usually filter out tags like "major character death" on ao3 asddfjkf) but I can't stop thinking about the AU in which Light can see L's ghost. Or maybe it's not a ghost, he's not so sure, maybe it's a delirium of his mind, some hallucinations. But he keeps talking with that ghost, arguing with him about mundane things, he sometimes even sees sugar cubes laying on the table top, next to the sugar bowl, as if someone took them out and left them here. At first seeing L happens sporadically. Light looks in the mirror and in the reflection over his shoulder is L's face. Or sometimes he sees him in a puddle on a rainy day. Or in the moving shadow in his apartment in the middle of the night. But as the time goes by, they start talking to each other, L sits on his favourite armchair and Light almost feels as if someone was maliciously pouring sugar into his tea sometimes. There's something really domestic in this, comfortable even. Discussions with L are always interesting and Light never feels bored when talking with him.

But the more time passes by, the more reality begins to mix with those illusions and Light is slowly sinking into insanity, seeing L everywhere, as if they are bound together forever by some invisible handcuffs

(Of course, I see it at most part as a comedy, with a lot of funny dialogues and situations but the further this plot goes, the more it becomes- well-)
