I don't usually go for captivity based whump but last night I considered a hyper specific concept that I'm now going feral about : a whumpee being locked up in a cell that's got walls of a heavy industrial grade glass instead of bars. There's a key or a code to get in, but when they arrive their rescuer obviously doesn't have it. The whumpee is slumped unconscious or semiconscious against the wall. The rescuer, seeing no other option, whispers "I'm so sorry," before using their weapon or some piece of other equipment to smash the glass and break whumpee out. They get showered in broken glass in the process -- the first thing the rescuer makes sure to remedy when they enter the cell.

For sure!

Fae Whumper who toys with a human. Maybe they pretend to love them, they're special, they do everything for Whumpee! Until they're done, and they tell Whumpee it was a game, and now they're bored. Whumpee is left alone, heart shattered, feeling like nothing but an object.

Fae Whumper who kidnaps Whumpee. They're a plaything. Maybe Whumpee has a skill, music or dance, and is forced to perform until they 'break'.

Dragon Whumper who demands a sacrifice. Whumpee is brought to them for this. Maybe Whumper kills them, maybe they keep them as one of their treasures. Whumpee is a prisoner for life.

Robot Whumper who loves to experiment. They implant a mechanical control in Whumpee, on their spine, to control all their limbs. It hurts like hell, but Whumpee can't even scream.

Mermaid/siren Whumper who lures Whumpee in, only to grab them and drown them.

Alien Whumper kidnapping Whumpee to do research. They're fascinated by Whumpee.

Good old Vampire Whumper, using Whumpee as a blood bag. Giving them a good life or the bare minimum, whatever they prefer.

Demon Whumper playing with Whumpee, terrifying them, torturing them, haunting them, tempting them to do evil...

God Whumper demanding sacrifice or eternal worship, demaning more and more, feeling entitled to Whumpee's life. Stripping them from everything, just because they can.

Ghost Whumper haunting Whumpee their whole lives. They have been attachted to Whumpee, and no matter where Whumpee goes or what they try, Whumper is there, haunting them. They love to see Whumpee cry in fear.

Doctor having to enter in casual/private/plain clothes, because whumpee shows such a viscerally negative reaction to anyone in a coat/med clothing.

Maybe they thought about restraining whumpee, but the struggling would reopen wounds. Or they thought about sedating whumpee, but the sedative would interact negatively with the plethora of other medications whumpee is already taking.

Or maybe they just decided that a change of clothes is the most humane thing to do.

Caretaker:

“Easy, I’ve got you.”

“I don’t care what you say, you’re having the day off.”

“You look tired, Whumpee.”

“Does anywhere else hurt?”

“Just get some rest for me. You need it.”

“Take it easy today, you still look kinda off.”

“You’re not making any sense, love.”

“Well, medicine doesn’t usually taste great.”

“I promise it’ll all feel better in the morning.”

“Would you just take it? For me?”

The trope of a character being totally incapacitated/overwhelmed by pain is living rent free in my mind rn.

Like all they can do is scream or cry, it hurts so bad they can’t even form words. They might be shaking or hyperventilating, breath hitching if another wave of pain hits them. They can’t stop the tears flowing down their face. Caretaker/team tries to soothe them but nothing works—they don’t even respond.

Or, maybe they do, but its a quiet, pleading “please, make it stop,” between cries. Maybe they beg. “Just shoot me.”

Caretaker/team probably wouldn’t know how to respond. “We’re trying,” they say. Or, “No. I won’t do that.”

🤍 Subtle Signs of a Caretaking Dynamic 🤍

Caretaker stepping in front of whumpee instinctively when there's gunfire/a loud noise/etc.

Whumpee looking towards Caretaker instinctively when faced with danger or a difficult question.

Caretaker carrying whumpee's belongings for them or opening doors for them. Generally making tasks easier for whumpee.

Caretaker knows things about whumpee's recovery or medical situation off the top of their head, without even having to think about it.

Or Caretaker gets defensive when asked about whumpee. "Why do you want to know? What do you want with them?"

Whumpee leaning against Caretaker's shoulder when they're next to each other.

Caretaker lightly brushing a hand against whumpee's hand in a gesture of comfort. Or whumpee initiates that, and Caretaker picks up on a hint and holds their hand.

If the relationship is fated or somehow bound, there may be markers of a unique bond, such as tattoos, bite marks, etc.

Their tone of voice changing completely as soon as they start talking to each other. Maybe they're shy with everyone else but joke with each other. Or maybe they act cheerful with everyone else, but turn serious as soon as they can talk to the one other person who knows what's really going on.

Nonverbally checking if whumpee is okay with meaningful glances across a room or "thumbs-up versus thumbs-down" gestures.

Caretaker immediately noticing when something is wrong for whumpee and getting visibly stressed.

Whumpee who used to be so chatty. They talked to everyone, always smiling, always full of energy. Honestly, Caretaker kind of wanted them to calm down and be quiet. Yet after their rescue, they're near silent. Maybe they'll say a few words like 'yes' 'no' and 'thank you'. Maybe they'll say nothing at all. They're not full of energy, they hardly move. They don't smile. They don't meet anyone's gaze. Caretaker deeply regrets ever wanting them to be quiet.

“Where’s…?”

“The others are out on a mission today. I got babysitting duty. So, if you need anything, don’t. And if you’re going to be sick, do it while I’m not in the room. Tissues and water are on your nightstand, and your meds are in the bathroom.”

Alpha finding their Omega curled up and sobbing on the floor and immediately drooping the tone of their voice to a very gentle softness and asking to touch and comfort Omega. the Omega just nodding in silence and allowing for hair pets and nothing more.

best part of princess bride is that inigo loudly and openly states to anybody who will listen that he's going to kill a guy for revenge and has been chasing this for a while and instead of anybody saying "but revenge wont bring ur father back are u really sure that killing this guy will make anything better arent u scared of regretting the one thing uve spent ur entire life chasing" they're all just like "yea dude sounds cool hope you find him" and then he does and inigo kills him and is just "aw cool my dads avenged now i can go ride off into the sunset with my friends" and i think thats actually really great. yea maybe revenge isnt always the answer but it sure does make you feel better

A character being flogged all the while makes unflinching eye-contact with one person in particular, even as they flinch at the impact of yet another lash, even as they grit their teeth stubbornly against a building cry of agony- and much as the other character wants to, as much as they can’t stand to see the punished character in pain, they don’t look away, determined to give them the small measure of comfort of one sympathetic gaze and willing as much of that emotion through their eye-contact as possible.

...do they know each other? Is the first character taking on a punishment meant for the other? Did the witness start out as merely a sympathetic onlooker? Is the second character being made to watch as their own punishment? Is it a target one to affect the other situation? Is the witness being forcibly held back from intervening and making things worse? Is this the first time the characters have seen each other for a long while? Does each stroke only count if the other witnesses it?
