Armenian Vardanyan iconography such as carpet patterns that dissolve into the curtains are depicted in the works. The installation of the unstretched canvases themselves is a reference to a mode of hanging carpets, in addition to a means of envisioning a larger work and expanded narrative. For Vardanyan that expanded narrative is not just one of her own life and continued development of self, but also an acknowledgment that while her personal experience has and can still feel isolating, it is in fact human—reflecting that her emotions have been and are felt by many others. Annemari Vardanyan, Inside My Mind, Opening Saturday 2-5pm! #gardenparty #drinks 🥂🌴 Lowell Ryan Projects is pleased to present a solo exhibition titled Inside My Mind by Prague-based artist Annemari Vardanyan. The exhibition will feature eight large-scale unstretched paintings on canvas stapled directly to the walls of the gallery, as well as four medium-sized canvas works. Originally from Armenia, Vardanyan’s works depict quotidian scenes of life as a student—at home in her bedroom, with groups of fellow classmates hanging out, or simply a wall with windows in her home. These psychological portraits explore the spaces between uncertainty and place, and between alienation and hope. A recent graduate of The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague this will be Vardanyan’s first solo exhibition. Dry Aged Strip Steaks
2022
Oil on Mylar mounted on panel
18h x 17w in
45.72h x 43.18w cm

Set on a creamy slightly pink cast background four dry-aged strip steaks are delicately rendered in tones red, pink, and beige, while grayish lavender shadows reference a sunlit warmth. The artist’s hand can be felt in the soft application of paint set against the smooth surface of the archival Mylar. Central to Carrie Mae Smith’s practice is an exploration of culinary implements and their historical and social implications. Smith’s delicate luminous paintings are often depictions of items from a particular museum, acquired from local estate sales, or ingredients that she herself will cook. Influenced by her life in the Northeastern United States, including having worked as a personal chef in Martha’s Vineyard, Smith’s works serve as symbols of class, labor, friendship, tradition, love, and utility. #dryagedsteak #culinaryarts #art (at Lowell Ryan Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpnbqgdvda5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

While savoring the act of painting, Smith’s process also references the gesture of serving. The act of serving a meal or a cup of tea now applies to family, friends, and loved ones, but through her paintings extends to the viewer as well. In the title work of the exhibition, Four Forks and Four Plates, 2022 a stack of four gold and teal-rimmed plates rest on a beige surface. Two forks are on top of the stack and two forks rest next to the plates as if waiting to be set out on the table in preparation for dinner, or possibly dessert. The soft cast of daylight reflects from the tongs of the forks and extends an almost lavender-hued shadow off the side of the china. The softness of Smith’s brushwork alludes to the effortless nature of setting down the plates and knives on the table, almost as if a second-nature movement. While the skill of Smith’s brushwork and the process of setting a table are not instinctive acts, but instead the result of years of practice, attention to detail and refinement, Carrie Mae Smith’s works allow the viewer to surrender to her process and relish in the moment of reflection and anticipation. Upcoming: Annemari Vardanyan
Inside My Mind, March 25 - April 29 Lowell Ryan Projects is pleased to present a solo exhibition titled Inside My Mind by Prague-based artist Annemari Vardanyan. The exhibition will feature eight large-scale un-stretched paintings on canvas stapled directly to the walls of the gallery, as well as two medium-sized stretched canvas works. Vardanyan’s practice has roots in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the ethnic and territorial conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan that has been ongoing since 1988, and which eventually led Vardanyan’s family to flee the region. While Vardanyan was young when her family left Armenia, bringing few worldly possessions and a hope for a better life free of conflict and ethnic persecution, she spent her teenage years not just developing her own sense of self and purpose, but acclimating to a new culture, while attempting with her family to retain vestiges their own ethnic heritage. Vardanyan’s experiences are reflected in works that can appear banal, and almost universal in depictions of young students dressed in clothes influenced by a global culture, the result of years of social media and the spread of the internet. However, her experiences do not go unnoticed as a sense of quietness appears in the works. The artist explains “the title of the exhibition, In My Mind, stems from this idea that behind the curtain of everyday banality, each of us can see a completely different reality.” Studio view: Annemari Vardanyan, Prague, CZ. #annemarivardanyan #artstudio (at Lowell Ryan Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpddkWVPovB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Five gold-rimmed white teacups protrude from a shadowed backdrop set in front of a stack of saucer plates and placed next to the left rims of two gold-rimmed white dinner plates. The setting of the still life creates a juxtaposition between a caramel brown-toned surface and a mahogany-shadowed backdrop, while touches of light reflect off the rims of the cups. Central to Carrie Mae Smith’s practice is an exploration of culinary implements and their historical and social implications. The daughter of a butcher, Smith supported her artistic practice early on working as a private chef. Quiet moments alone in the kitchen precipitated the contemplation of ingredients, serving ware, and culinary implements, as well as the meaning that can be associated with them. Fine china and silver have long been symbols of status, family, tradition, and history, while expensive cuts of meat and delicate pastries are not foods of the working class. As Smith’s focus has primarily shifted to her artistic practice, she continues however to contemplate the subtle meanings of these items in her work.
