Architecture - Building as Art
Tumblr media
Who built it/designed it? Famed Brazilian-Japanese architect Ruy Ohtake
What is it? a hotel
When was it built? 2002
Where is it? in the district of Jardins in the Brazilian city of São Paulo
Why was it built? He wanted to build a 95-room boutique hotel shaped like a slice of watermelon in order to seize commanding 360° city views from higher floors.
How is it "art"? (That's the tricky one.)  its art because it embodies the concept of a hotel as art in several ways such as Artful Functionality. Ruy Ohtake has carefully considered how the hotel's shape influences the guest experience. The rooms feature circular windows echoing the building's curves, and the furniture is strategically placed to maximize space and light within the curved walls. Even the limitations of the building's design become opportunities for creativity.

Vik Muniz - Using Media Creatively
Title: “Soccer Ball”
Material: Ink Jet Print
Dimensions: 68.3 x 50 cm
Tumblr media
Vik Muniz's artistic approach involves taking photographs of wire sculptures, essentially creating art from art. This technique particularly struck me in his piece "Soccer Ball," because my little brother plays soccer. The photograph itself is captivating in its simplicity and clarity. The wire sculpture resembles the line drawings we often encounter in daily life. Muniz skillfully manipulates the thickness of the wires to create shadows that define the soccer ball's shape. The line positioned above the ball cleverly creates the illusion of it resting on a field.

Group 2: Good/Bad Logos
Tumblr media
good logo
Tumblr media
bad logo
The Shell gas logo is a good logo for several reasons, the yellow and red colors combined with the unique shell shape have become well known with the Shell brand. This strong brand recognition translates to instant product identification, even without the company name displayed. The logo has also undergone subtle changes throughout history but retains its core elements. The colors yellow and red are often associated with positive emotions like energy, optimism, and power which often draw customers to stop at their gas stations compared to competitors. The Kia logo is an example of a bad logo because of lack of clarity,  this logo uses an asymmetrical font for the word Kia which can make it hard to understand what it says if you're not familiar with the brand. At glance some people might think it just says "KN".

ART PROJECT (SELF-PORTRAIT) – Look at the work of Romare Bearden in Revel or online. He created collages that combine media (gouache, pencil, colored pencil) and photographs to express things from his life that he thought people could universally relate to. He was representing himself powerfully long before the advent of selfies.
What are you fascinated by in your daily life? Create a self-portrait that somehow represents YOU. This could be a selfie (remember this is ART - your representation should encompass the definition as introduced in our text, and this is a graded assignment), a virtual collage, anything you assemble that communicates something to the viewer. But don’t let me (or anyone else) limit you – be as creative as you desire! Think about HOW your self-portrait will elevate the viewer's understanding of the subject

WRITING A SELF-PORTRAIT
I am a 24 year old white female from the Irish, Italian and Czechoslovakian decent. I was born and raised in Florida. I carry lots of baggage with me everyday, and try to find a sense of weight lifted by doing things I enjoy such as going to the beach and hanging out with my friends. I’m currently working for a warehouse but on bed rest do to a blood infection. I have sacrificed a lot just to put a smile on others faces and that’s what I can find unique about myself.
Create a perceptual profile. What “baggage” are you bringing along when you look at art? Answer the following questions – How old are you? What is the gender you primarily align with? Where are you from? What is your ethnicity? What do you do for fun? Are you a member of any organized group? Where do you work? What makes you uniquely you? This helps us see from what exact point in the world we view and receive visual information.

ART & WRITING
This is my tapestry that hangs above my bed on my ceiling. It is made up of white, grey and black silk threads. As for where it originated from I’m unsure but I’ve had it forever and have relocated in the same spot above my bed from house to house because it just brings me a sense of comfort. I find it beautiful because I find it as a form of safe escape.
Select a work of art from your life. It must be something that hangs in your house or your room, something that is important to you or that you look at everyday. Include a picture. In paragraph form (4 sentences), tell me about the art – what media were used to create it? What use does it serve? Do you think it is beautiful? Why?

I was assigned Frida Kahlo 1939 The Two Fridas. 67 11 1/16”x 67 11 1/16” oil on canvas. Museo de Art Moderno, Mexico City
1.This painting was completed shortly after her divorce with Diego Rivera
2. This portrait shows Frida's two different personalities.
3.she admitted it expressed her desperation and loneliness with the separation from diego
4.In 1947, this painting was acquired by the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes
5.The purchase price was 4,000 Pesos (about $1,000) at that time and an additional 36 Pesos for the frame
at first look of this painting I thought it was representing twins or more of a Gemini like mind, but after reading that it portrays her feelings about her ex husband it made me feel a deeper connection to the painting.
