Sit with me

I decided to rank my classmates by asking two questions to myself, well actually three. 

First, who is most perfect to sit next to me at the table. I remember sitting at a birthday party when you where a little kid, the one you adored most sat next to you. 

The day this assignment was released 10 out of 17 classmates asked a question in the what’s app chat we have. I wrote down all the questions and rated them. Then I put them in an order from most reactions to fewer reactions by classmates. After this I made a point system and divided by which questions I liked most and which where most successful. This way I would surround myself at my table with people I like and have good ideas. I used the whatsapp picture of my classmates.

Process 

I think its very important that you dont take yourself too seriously. When that thought came into my head I thought about the serie ‘Better Call Saul’. The main character in the series also doesn’t take himself too serious. With that in mind I watch and few episodes again and I came across this sales pitch. 

I broke down what the character was pitching to his audience.

start with a temptation question

Catch frase with something nice

Say something nice about them, why they need it (or at least what is so temptation about them what they need)

Give a lot of compliments why they are so amazing and eventually need you

I wrote down new sentences with about the same essence. The difference was that I was selling myself, and not television time.

Digital family portret

First when I saw the photograph of Gillian Wearing imitate her brother, it didn’t do much to me. After I investigated the work of Gillian and I understood she was imitating her family members, with using face and body masks. 

I don’t find it interesting to imitate the exact work of somebody else. Except for the fact that you do a lot of research about the work which is interesting. Also you could steal the work and give another twist to it. But than again you add the twist to it. 

I was intrigued by how she made the mask, and how real some of them where. I decided to go a little bit of another way. During corona I only saw my parents on face time for months. I didn’t have a washing machine at my place, so I dropped my laundry at my parents, and they would throw it out in a bag. Throwing out a bag of laundry at three stories high apartment, because of covid, crazy.

I wanted to add the face time portret into this self portret. Because that is the portret I shortly started to explore of my parents and family.

This way I made a portret of my entire family/household, my brother, father and mother. 

I use my laptop and phone because those are the machines I used during face time. I still used some elements such as make up to integrate the realisme with the digital side of my family. I used several make up sorts. This way I’m more realistically a part of my father, mother and brother and also digital.

Memory in a scene

I made a storyboard of this particular memory I had as a child. Underneath the drawings there is written what happens with the camera. For instance the first drawing says zoom in, this way you know how the cut is going to look in this scene. 

At the end I drew myself without a head. This has a particular reason. When I see myself in a memory and I talk to these people, they all look a little blurry. It’s hard to see my own face in a memory. Despite of that, everything looks cristal clear.

The reason I drew this memory is because I found it very special I still have it. This was when I was 2 years old. I remember it was taken in France with the best friends of my parents and their son. We walked around in the garden all day and after we had diner.

Ik had laatst een hevige discussie met mijn vriendin over een politieke kwestie. Deze app zorgt ervoor dat je daar nooit meer last van hebt.

TINDER X BIG BRAIN 

Tijdens corona heb je allemaal mensen die niet geloven in het virus (antivirus waanzin). 

Op het nieuws heb ik gehoord dat er al aardig veel huwelijken zijn kapot gelopen vanwege het virus waanzin. 

Mensen die perfect met elkaar hebben geleefd en kinderen hebben, maar geen discussie met hun partner kunnen voeren over corona. De een denkt dat het totale onzin is en een product is van de overheid, waarbij de ander denkt dat het belangrijk is om de maatregel van de overheid na te leven.

Vanwege deze verhitte discussie kan een huwelijk sneller kapot lopen. De gehuwelijkte zitten blijkbaar na al deze jaren niet op een lijn, en hebben hevige verschillen in hoe ze naar iets kijken.

PAK HET PROBLEEM BIJ HET BEGIN AAN

In de huidige tijd leren veel mensen elkaar online kennen, op deze manier wordt het toeval weggehaald en kan je er later achter komen dat diegene toch niet zo goed bij je past. Je hebt je niet goed georiënteerd vanwege het gemak van een datings app. 

DIT IS VERLEDEN TIJD

Met deze app wat een combinatie is tussen tinder en een (big brain nintendo spel) wordt er aan het begin eerst gemeten wat je interesses, politieke kwesties, lievelingsspullen etc zijn. Ook wordt er gekeken naar het IQ van alle individuelen. Op deze manier kom je alleen maar mensen tegen die door een algoritme voor je neer zijn gezet. Zo krijg je alleen maar matches met mensen waarvan je zeker weet dat je op één lijn met hun zit. Dit voorkomt in de toekomst een heetgebakerde discussie over politiek, sociale en culturele opinies. 

EEN SAMENLEVING ZONDER PROBLEMEN

Sta ik hier echt achter?

NEE! Natuurlijk niet, maar het is wel een grappig idee. Zo wordt een samenleving totaal niet divers, en hoezo bepaald een algoritme voor mij dat ik niet met iemand mag matchen die een iets lager IQ heeft? Misschien kick ik daar wel op, omdat ik een minderwaardigheid complex heb. 

Nee, algoritmes gaan niet mijn liefdes leven bepalen. En het is natuurlijk al helemaal niet de bedoeling dat je voor niks meer openstaat. Lekker opgesloten zitten in al je eigen meningen, normen en waardes. Hierdoor verklein je je wereld(beeld) en kom je in een tunnelvisie terecht.

Een totaal saai en nutteloos bestaan waarin je niks meer meemaakt.

Zou het huwelijken kunnen redden? Zouden mensen uiteindelijk gelukkiger worden als ze geen discussies hebben? De mensheid zou niet verder komen vanwege deze tunnelvisie. Maar mensen zouden gelukkiger kunnem worden, en is dat niet waar het hele leven eigenlijk echt om draait?

What do you represent?

 During this Gay Pride February 1978, Trafalgar Square in London a person is holding up a protest sign: ‘Gay Love, it’s the real thing’. By doing this he creates awareness in a way I find quit amusing. He makes this interesting by stealing the font and slogan of the brand Coca Cola. 

This powerful messages gives the idea that all the people who feel attached to their brand Coca Cola also have to accept the homosexual people. 

Coca Cola is the real thing, but so are homosexuals and the entire human race. 

We are all the ‘Real Thing’, just like Coca Cola represents.

People To The Power And Power To The People!

The hero rises, and draws a strict line. He was not afraid to choose the dangerous and uncomfortable side. Hoe chose the right side.

He chose to have a voice. 

Never let your voice be suppressed by someone. Never agree with something you do not stand for. You can rise up and fight, with the power of the human choice. 

Make it personal to prove an extremely important point. This hero is making it very personal. He gives the option to turn around or kill him by riding him over. Does the driver want to be the culprit? No he doesn’t. 

Make it personal and prove their point wrong!

The power of one single person can cause a domino effect. The cliche: one good deeds leads to more good deeds is true. 

This photograph which is actually a video is the inspiration for many people. People who are being suppressed, in a country, in their life by somebody else, at work or anywhere else. This powerful image, leads you to believe that you can take control of what you want for yourself. It’s true.

Do not fight with violence but with the power of humanity. 

One single person can change or start an entire movement, that person can be you! 

Achtergrond verhaal van het protest

In het begin van Mei 1989 waren heftige protesten aan de gang in Beijing, China. 

Wat begon als een kern van protesterende studenten liep al snel uit naar tienduizenden demonstranten die protesteerde tegen de censuur en streefde naar persvrijheid en vrijheid van meningsuiting. Deze basis elementen voor een democratie werden door de toen huidige communistische party en de invloed van de Sovjet Unie stevig onderdrukt. 

Het weerwoord van de in armoede levende werkklasse groeide al snel uit tot een vel protest van een gigantische mensen massa. Op 4 Juni 1998 besloot de communistische party het bevel te geven om 250.000 soldaten richting Beijing te sturen en het protest de kop in te drukken. De militairen en politie kregen de opdracht om de protesten met een harde hand neer te slaan. 

Op de afbeelding is te zien hoe tanken door de straten rijden om naar het Tiananmen Square te rijden om de inmiddels 1 miljoen bij elkaar gekomen protestanten uit elkaar te drijven.

Sleep Consulting Glasses NASA

I came up with classes that work like a ND filter of a camera. The filter makes it darker. With this glasses with several filters (11 filters after some math done). The filter automatically goes down when the light catches the eye. It depends how many filters out of the 11 will be used according to the time of day. This way astronauts won’t be sleep deprived, and will have more energie, care, and happiness with them what causes a safer and happier space station.

What is the problems most astronauts have in space?

When you are in space for a longer period of time say 6months, which people are in the Internation Space Station ISS.

No time for yourself can cause more irritations so there might be a lot of fights.

What causes most irritations, if someone doesn’t sleep long enough they are moody.

This thought above made me think about a book I just read ‘Why We Sleep’. This is a scientific book about why we sleep, what causes bad and good sleep, how the brains work during sleep, and how we work when we don’t have enough sleep. Basically a good night of sleep is very important and determines a lot of things for and individual but also community.

I once read a piece about astronauts that their sleep is terrible, because of the fact they see the sunlight come up and go under every 90 minutes. They circle the part every 90 minutes, which causes a decrease in Melatonine (sleeping stuff your body makes).

The first photograph on the left side has only one filter. As you can see the picture is more clear and exciting. The last picture on the upper right has 10 filters. The picture is more mellow and causes less activity.

I listened to a song by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z ‘Empire State Of Mind’. In the song text they talk about a concrete jungle, this represent New York. So a forrest could also be a crowded place you can’t oversee. I choose the Zuidas in Amsterdam, which is called a teeny tiny Manhattan.

I decided to photograph a chairman on a chair in the heart of the Zuid As.

During the shoot I decided to place the chair 90 degrees side ways. This could represent the economy and therefor his job. I think, In all the picture the chairman looks powerful but still very vulnerable. The small chair emphasise the power an important chairman can have, not much.

Got inspired by this picture, by Elsbeth Struijk Van Bergen.

Burn It Down

While doing some research about both of the artists, a scene from a film Western Culurtue, burning house, came across. This film was made by Ragnar Kjartannson.  I watch this scene multiple times. I was scaring but conforming at the same time. During watching this I asked myself all these questions what would be happening there at that moment? 

As you see it’s early, so somebody could be in bed and could get killed by the smoke or fire. On the other hand the person could wake up any minute and run out of the house nakedly.

It is one shot on a tripod, somebody could have planted a camera there to see how he or she kills somebody in a horrific way.

Would somebody burn down all their stuff they had to create absolute freedom, as in ‘Into The Wild’?

While these questions popped up in my head, the sound of the birds rises. This gave some calmness to the situation. A feeling of acceptance came to it. Would the person inside be dead? Would the culprit have their revenge? Or would have somebody created ultimate freedom for themselves?

I decided to perform one of the outcomes and jumped out of the house.

Paris is burning

I decided to write a recension out of the point of view of VOGUE and the protagonist WILLI NINJA. 

In een scenario schrijf boek ‘Save the Cat’ heb ik gelezen een een tagline de belangrijkste zin is van een stuk tekst. Deze zin moet genoeg aandacht kunnen trekken, maar natuurlijk ook al een klein voorproefje geven van wat er gaat komen. Vanwege dit is een veelbetekenende tagline erg lastig te formuleren.

Mijn geschreven recensie bestaat vanwege dit dan ook uit drie verschillende tagline die samen een kritische en eerlijke bespreking van de documentaire formulieren.

‘Paris is burning’ is een rijk sociaal inzichtelijk document van een rauw en eerlijke afgebeelde dragqueen subcultuur, ‘The Balls’ ( in de jaren 80 van New York). Tijdens het ‘Voguing’, wat een unieke mix van dansen en poseren is kan iedereen zichzelf uiten. Met trots kunnen wij beweren dat met behulp van het charisma van ons blad ‘Vogue’, deze bijzondere scene heeft kunnen toevoegen aan de samenleving.

For a lot of people I assume a shocking but important document. Yes this happend! An important piece of documentation about an important fase of my life which created and inspired a whole lot of other people, I hope. The ‘Balls’ where ours, our domain. The raw way of the documentation reflects perfectly what was happening here at that point. It’s was tough but still one of the most important times of my life. An important piece of history I would say.

Een fascinerend kijk in een onbekende wereld waarin de donkere homosexuele/transgender onderklasse van New York kosten wat het kost zichzelf een podium biedt om respect en schoonheid naar elkaar af te dwingen.

Een openbarend document waarin er wordt vormgegeven hoe donkere homo/transseksuelen door middel van een sterk overeenkomstig gevoel voor eigenwaarde een hechte familie en bijzondere scene creëren.

Allebei een kompas naar het noodzakelijke.

BUITEN DE RING IS BUITENLAND.

On the introduction day at WDKA I spoke to Mick and Gabriela whom I didn’t know at that point. They were both born and raised in Rotterdam, the arch enemy city of the ‘Amsterdammers’. We also talked about that hostility the cities have towards each other (sometimes, mostly during football). We also made a lot of jokes about how people from Amsterdam stay in Amsterdam and never go out. I was very familiar with that fraise too. “Buiten de ring is buitenland” a fraise commonly used in Amsterdam, which means when you are outside of the highway surrounding Amsterdam, the you are abroad in a far away country. 

When I’m on the phone with friends, and they say I’m in Utrecht or Den Hague, I say: “Hu what are you doing abroad the country?”. 

With this matter in mind I wanted to give a presentation about what an Amsterdammer thinks about Rotterdam and how he sees the city (in a very compact summary of course).

People I know recommended the ‘Kunsthallen’ in Rotterdam several times. When I asked my parents if they had any recommendations they said “Not the kunsthallen, since it’s closed right now because of Covid-19”. Just because of the fact I couldn’t go there, made me want to go. I decided to visit the ‘Kunsthallen’ with a couple of classmates.

And yes it was open.

I came across this carpet, that was woven out of textile. The textile was painted on, as I understood before it was being woven together. This made a carpet painting. 

Despite of the process that I found very special, the whole painting gave a very strong ambience. The shapes of animals/robots also looked like a city where you could easily get lost in. Despite of the old architecture you see at the lower part of the painting it had a very futuristic feeling for me. The futuristic feeling and older architecture and style made it feel exactly like Blade Runner 2019. When I looked longer at this painting, I came to the conclusion that I missed something: intro music. So I made a very short fragment of music, that represents the feeling of the painting. For me this empowers the emotion.

Meaning of the assignment

Destroy the thought of the worst thing you have ever done to somebody. Move on.

Go back to that particular moment in your mind and think why, how and what.

first, what is the worst thing I have done to somebody?

(I like the fire part)

Isn’t it the beauty that you and you only have the power to destroy something that you keep with you?

A person can hurts themselves the most cause they have an entire life time to do so. If you hurt somebody it almost never is as lang as your entire life. With this in mind I think I am the one who hurts myself the most by overthinking stuff. 

Overthinking keeps you doubting about things. I consider doubt something powerful, cause that’s how you know that’s it’s something important. But overthinking is something truly different than doubt, it might destroy your self esteem and holds you off doing something.

Execution

As you see I wrote the word on two different post-its, because it are two different words. They are both totally unharmful but when you collapse them together as one, the terrible word overthinking comes up. By setting the two papers on fire in the middle, they go in different directions. So despite of the fact it goes up in flames, the fire also separate the word into two unharmful words. 

Stranger can also be yourself.

Idee 

Vanuit elke windrichting om het gebouw of kunstwerk een foto maken van een voorbij ganger, die de buurt representeert. Zo zie je precies wie er in de buurt wonen. De mensen zijn het belangrijkste in een buurt, die creëren het gevoel. Bewoners om een monument heen fotograferen, elke een andere windrichting, zo zie je ook elke keer een ander gedeelte van het monument, en kan je goed oriënteren waar je precies bent/moet zijn.

Execution 

Unfortunately the other half of my file photos were corrupt, I have to get them back with a special device or something (I’m not sure how it works). This way I couldn’t truly present my end product. But I guess this represent the 30 days of failure perfectly.

As you see In the picture, there is a monument in the back. You can see that the first picture is taken from the back of the statue. The second picture is made from the side of the statue. If you have four pictures than you would exactly know where you were. Unfortunately that’s not the case.
