i will say: once you put the x-files into its 90′s tv context it really is arresting how good it is. how well it’s made. hell, you put it up against almost anything made since, even the fancy prestige stuff, and as dopey as the show assuredly can be, the ineffable, cinematic gravitas of the first five seasons really is like nothing else. the x-files isn’t “about” things in the same way that other art i love is. sure it’s about “science” and “belief” and “wonder”, and how you deal with the shadowy spaces in the cracks of the known. but it doesn’t carefully craft a thesis on those things. it’s just sort of this grand is. mood in the most exalted sense. it’s not itself nuanced so much as it infuses you with the sensation of what nuance is. which is a very interesting and unique thing to be. it’s not something i can write reams of satisfying analysis of, because again it’s something that is more than something that was done. but i still respect it very much.
